I think it['s necessary to denote a difference between Canadian dollars and American dollars. At the current exchange rate, CDN$14M is about US$10.9M...which would seem to be about equivalent to what he is getting from Tampa Bay in take-home pay (after income taxes, keeping in mind that because of how the contract is structured, most of the money is parked in Florida). Unless I see some other evidence, I will presume $14M in Canadian dollars. To equal the total amount of the money Stamkos will get from Tampa Bay for the term Toronto could offer (take-home), Toronto would have had to offer US$12.37M, or close to CDN$16M. Remember though, Florida has no state income tax...most of Stamkos' earnings would only be subject to the top US tax rate of 39.6 percent.

I'll look for proof - but aren't they paid US currency? Meaning, 14 Million US. Of course, there's always the possible confusion with somebody else transferring that to local currency when spilling the "Rumor" they heard. Being that the league reports it's total revenue and reports in US currency, I'm going to believe that to be true. So it's 14M US unless somebody converted that from US currency to 14M CA.

Undisclosed research facility
That's exactly what Tampa fans and everyone else were saying to you before he signed somewhere. That he wasn't a guy you build a team around. You took it to mean they think he isn't good because he may leave. Now your saying the exact same thing because he didn't sign with you. Tampa fans knew what they were talking about apparently since your team felt exactly the same way. What a world.

Haha this is funny. I made this thread last December..

I was always of the opinion he was not a fit here. Tampa fans were not saying whatever you were saying, they were in fact saying he was over rated and the 4th best forward on their team.

You will see the majority of fans disagreed, but there are a handful of us who had no interest. I'd enjoy it if you insulted me you at least did your research.

The evidence is that all NHL contracts have been paid in US dollars for years.

Toronto was never interested in Stamkos ,some fans and the media were . Most sane people, which included Toronto ,s management group .Understood that overpaying for a UFA ,when your team is still trying to sort out what they have .And just finished dead last ,was just something you dont do .The time for that is after you see what your kids are

Complete Fabrication...and we're moving on.

I don't know what to believe, but if this were true then Stamkos just flipped the bird at the Leafs.

I would have been very much in favour of him coming to Toronto but not at that price. There was never any danger that Lou would overpay for his services, and what he got is pretty close to his actual value on the free-agent market, IMO.

No one would pay the number that's been suggested -- it's not not the actual dollar value but the proportion of cap space that could never work.

Of course they were, just not at any price.

How dare he want to get paid. Greedy piece of **** should go to the KHL.:sarcasm:

So you would pay him 14M ? I wouldn't . The TML can sign a good D and a couple of Vets to help the kids and be a better team then if they had Stamkos .

Good for TML fans the management group never fell back into the quick fix way of thinking that previous GM's of the TML did .

Rebuilds can be slower then you think . Not all picks and prospects will pan out . Stay the course and you will build a winner , Leaf,s fans

If he asked for 14 million then he was passing on the leafs. He would have known that was pricing himself out of what they could afford.

What a greedy SOB! :shakehead:doh:

Enjoy playing for a mediocre team that's trending down instead of an upcoming sure-fire contender, will laugh voraciously when you become Gomez 2.0 in a couple of years.

More likely Stamkos was the one passing. But whatever makes you feel better about your team.

I keep reading this, if he was passing on TO, why meet with them at all? And to be totally honest, i feel much better about my team minus a 14 million dollar Stamkos...or a 12 million dollar Stamkos...or a 10 million dollar Stamkos. Now, an 8.5 million dollar Stamkos (what's rumoured the Leafs actually offered), that i would be okay with, but understandably at the same money, Tampa would be the obvious choice...which i'm sure MLSE knew as well.

$14M Canadian is about $10.5M US..... :)

before anyone says it I know all salaries are US dollars.

I can see Stamkos looking for a close to max contract from Toronto if he wants to deal with the pressure and media headache he would get there.

what it says---he really had no desire to play in Toronto.

And when you consider the differences in income taxes, $10.5M US in Toronto is probably similar to the $8.5M US he took in Tampa.

Hopefully this dispells the notion players will drop everything to play for the Leafs.

Stammer pretty much told them you want me pay me. Its hilarious. No home town discount. No tears pulling the Leaf over his head.

Stamkos just got alot of respect from me. He knows the situation in Tampa is much, much better niw and in the future.
