Pure gold.

12 months of "we're getting Stamkos" followed by a Summer of " Most us are happy he didn't sign". Never change, T-Dot.

Context. At 8-9 million, a good percentage of fans were "okay" with signing him. At the reported 10-12 million, VERY FEW fans were okay with signing him. At this reported insane 14 million? I don't think you'll find 1 fan that would have done that.

Comparing how much more stress he would have playing in TO with the media in his butt constantly, i think that would have been reasonable compensation.

I find it hard to believe he asked for $5.5 million more from the Leafs...or anyone for that matter.

If the number was say 10 million...I could see that. But not 14 million.

It's probably like Daniel Craig and playing Bond again. He doesn't want to deal with all the crap that comes with it, so only way to convince him is giving an offer he can't refuse. For Craig, $75M per movie still isn't enough :)

That's some pretty good revisionist's history you got there. It's too bad we have 12 months worth of threads to back that up.

Yeah, because you have much better things to spend 14 million on this year, right? Gtfoh

While i totally agree, i'm old enough to remember the good times...and if you win in TO (not the cup, but just make the playoffs and compete) as a player, you can get God status here. Bower/Keon/Mahovolich/etc....all icons. Bobby Baun will be forever remembered for his broken ankle goal....guys like Clark/Gilmour/Roberts/Domi/Cujo/Potvin....never brought a cup, all local heroes. During the Ballard years...we iced some garbage teams, but guys like Sittler/Lanny/Salming/Vaive/Palmateer are revered. Hell, Allan freaking Bester can still get paid for autograph sessions...so this garbage about pressure in TO, while real, is a tad overstated. If you play like Kessel did here? Ya, you get called out. But if you play with heart and win some games, you are loved.

My guess is that the truth is one of the following:

* The ask was the equivalent of 14M $CDN
* We're looking at a game of telephone. Someone said that Stamkos was looking for a max deal (meaning max term -- look at how a lot of people use the term around here) and by the time it got to Marek, someone had assumed that Stamkos wanted maximum money, meaning 20% of Cap or about $14M.

Also, has anyone else listened to the podcast and can verify the OP's interpretation of what Marek said?

EDIT: I listened to the podcast and yup that was what Marek said.

Totally agree. I don't think 14 million is in any way realistic, but 10+ would have been, from both TO and Buffalo i assume.

Yup i doubt that the supposed $12 million offer from Buffalo was real, Considering that Stamkos's agent wasn't even talking to Buffalo from what i read. From what i saw Toronto, Detroit and Buffalo were willing to do $10.5M x 7 for Stamkos and not a penny more.

Seems like a story someone dreamed up on a slow day.

Just lol if you think the Leafs passed on him. He passed on the Leafs.

Nobody is stupid enough to give him 14 million and ruin there team for years. Nobody. Doesn't take a rocket scientest to figure that out. Or does it?

He asked for significantly more from Toronto because he didn't want to go there. If he did even slightly want to go there, all it'd have taken was beating Tampa's offer slightly, not by 50%+. Maybe this'll cool down leafs fans who think everyone wants to live in Toronto.

Toronto didn't pass on him, he passed on them.

He was pricing himself out of Toronto. If he actually wanted to go there he would have commanded less.

There's really no way for us to know either way. Not that it matters.

Anyway, Stamkos in Tampa with a good contract feels like the best outcome. I love seeing players stay with their teams through their whole career.
Agreed. It doesn't matter who rejected whom, he is where he should be.

That's some serious revisionist history.

A good portion of fans didn't want him at all, and even then ones that did were only interested if he was willing to take a sweetheart hometown discount.

Few if any fans wanted him if his price was $10M or more, let alone something as crazy as $14M

This poster would be first in line to criticize the Leafs for signing Stamkos to a ridiculous 14m/yr contract.

I'm not surprised you think that would be a good move for the Leafs; it's very short-sighted.

Check my post history. I have posts back to a year before he was a UFA saying I didn't want him at more than 8M AAV.

He asked for significantly more from Toronto because he didn't want to go there. If he did even slightly want to go there, all it'd have taken was beating Tampa's offer slightly, not by 50%+. Maybe this'll cool down leafs fans who think everyone wants to live in Toronto.

I like how this is supposed to be insulting? What does this say about the rest of the NHL? He literally only met with ONE team before going back to Tampa. He had Buffalo and Detroit at least interested in a big contract, with many other teams involved.

This shows at some level he wanted to come home. So all of this "He didn't really want to go to Toronto" stuff makes you guys look really sad.

that's like saying he didn't want to sign with the Leafs... don't tell me he expected them to give him those money.

It's like an HFBoard topic come to life!

"We'd like you to join our team."
"No thanks."
"Fine then! You want too much money! We didn't want you anyway!"

Why bother going to the meeting? Why bother testing UFA? /if he didn't want to entertain the thought -- why go to the meeting?

The thing that amused me the most out of the Stamkos situation was that he apparently declined to even discuss a contract with Detroit, who probably could've (after tax differential) given him the equivalent of 14 million per. I think a Detroit deal at 10.5 would've equalled a Toronto offer of 14?

Ouch for Detroit.
