I don't really care who turned down who and what the reasons why were. I'm just glad it didn't happen. It was a trap and I'm glad we didn't either fall for it/were spared from it. He might(?) be an 8.5 million player now, but he isn't trending up.

It's pretty clear he never got what he wanted from the open market and went back to the reported deal he was offered from the Lightning for weeks/months.

He said he turned down more money and instead wanted to play where he had the best chance to win. The long negotiations and last minute deal are an indication that it was a hard decision for Stammer and the money he turned down from Toronto and perhaps others was significant. 14M is BS though.

I don't buy this for a minute.

Even if Stamkos did actually ask for this much, that ask would have been player/agent-speak for "I don't want to play here, so don't bother."

Stamkos wasn't even a good fit here for $10M/year, never mind a max contract. No one should fault him for staying in a fantastic situation in Tampa.

That's exactly what makes it so plausible. Why would Stamkos want to give a discount to the league's worst team?

Pretty clear that "hometown discounts" and "players wanting to bring a Cup to their birthplace" are exceedingly rare. How many truly big name players left their team to go play for their "hometown"? It's always speculated, but it almost never happens. Suter, Parise, and Stastny are the only ones that come to mind recently. Now everyone is certain that Shattenkirk will sign in the New York area because he was born there when he's never said anything like that  There were claims that he said he wouldn't sign out west, but those turned out to be false. He just said he wouldn't sign in Edmonton, and I mean....who can blame him? It's silly and it almost never happens.

A $14MM ask would have been insulting. I hadn't thought he's that kind of person.

Or he'd rather take less money to play with a cup contender, if he was going to a brutal team like Toronto the only incentive they could've given him was money.

I'm a bit confused. Are you implying that anything less than the max contract is a discount for Stamkos? He probably gave a discount to Tampa (which is understandable), but anything more than $9M/year is no discount for what he brings regardless of what team offers it. $10M/year and above would have been very significant overpayment...you don't have to get anywhere near $14M/year before that contract gets extremely ugly.

I'm not Stamkos so I have no idea what he was thinking during the process. I never really wanted to bring him aboard for anything near the money that was rumored, so I'm not particularly disappointed that he chose Tampa. It's a great situation for him to be in and completely understandable. Who wouldn't want to play there right now?

Seems like it's a good thing they passed up on him? Quite the difference in contract from what he signed

Anyone with a working brain would have told you that a Stamkos signing would have been pretty bad for Toronto, as he'd take up way too many resources that would be better left to your own stable of prospects. In 3 years, that 14 million could easily equal up to Matthews, Nylander, and Marner.

IF the report is true, it's not at all about a discount because the amount mentioned is nowhere near his fair market value. If he signed with Tampa for a discount then it wasn't much of a discount. I don't think there were teams lining up to pay him substantially more than what he got.

I would have signed him for $8M/year (not that he'd have taken that from the Leafs in the first place) but otherwise you're right.

If he were a young RHD of high caliber...I would have fought tooth and nail for him.

he was never leaving tampa

He commented that he had thoughts about leaving.

Yup. Hell, yzerman was surprised he took his offer.

Assuming the cap doesn't go up, and all of those guys are decent players, you're probably saying goodbye to one of them, and you have to let JVR walk even for nothing.

So why even bother with the BS then? If he didn't want to play in TO, just say so. If he wanted to return to Tampa...why wait so long? And as far as wanting to play for a contender, if you are looking for 14 million; you've pretty much killed the chance of your team being able to contend.

$14M Canadian is about $10.5M US..... :)

before anyone says it I know all salaries are US dollars.

I can see Stamkos looking for a close to max contract from Toronto if he wants to deal with the pressure and media headache he would get there.

what it says---he really had no desire to play in Toronto.

Tampa in 5 years will still be better than Toronto. It was a smart play by Stamkos that he came back regardless of the money offered by Toronto. Yzerman building a dynasty and Stammer knows it.

Because he doesn't have to say anything and that's not BS.

He wanted to see what other teams would offer.

Offering a certain player too much money isn't the player killing a team, it's the GM.
