Everyone's so sure that Tampa is going to be great for a long time. I'm seeing a team that with every passing year is going to have a harder and harder time to retain their talent. because of the cap.

Seems like it's a good thing they passed up on him? Quite the difference in contract from what he signed

Canadian taxed (+ fan base) vs Florida taxed (+ fan base)

EDIT: in St Pete, he can go for pancakes with a different girl every morning w/o having any questions to answer...
In TO, that would be all over the news

Considering what he signed for, throwing out a huge number to see how desperate the Leafs were isnt as naive as many wish to think.

He pretty much treated the Leafs if you think about it.

 It doesn't sound like you've put much thought into it.

Well, that and the most livable city in North America (along with Vancouver).
Oh, and arguably the best management team in the NHL.
Oh, and probably the best coach in the NHL.
Oh, and the best prospects in the league.
And the most loyal fan-base.
All opinion, not fact.

It amazes me how hf'ers think prospects really influence free agents. If they do at all its at the bottom of the list

If this is true it sounds like Stamkos asked for an absurd figure knowing that Toronto would not accept. Best possible outcome for him and the team. 14M ask for him is a polite way of saying no thanks without offending the locals.

For that much money anyone would.

Look what he signed for, pretty obvious he was not serious about playing for the leafs

Agreed if this 14 million number was real that's his way of saying thanks but no thanks. Maybe at first he said no then they continued to pressure him for a number so he was like 14 mil boom.

I keep reading this, if he was passing on TO, why meet with them at all? And to be totally honest, i feel much better about my team minus a 14 million dollar Stamkos...or a 12 million dollar Stamkos...or a 10 million dollar Stamkos. Now, an 8.5 million dollar Stamkos (what's rumoured the Leafs actually offered), that i would be okay with, but understandably at the same money, Tampa would be the obvious choice...which i'm sure MLSE knew as well.

I don't understand your question. You could ask why Toronto brass met with him if all they were offering was 8.5M.

Right...cause offering 8.5 is far less realistic than demanding 14 million...oh wait....he signed for 8.5.

The Leafs offered him what he is/was worth, he chose Tampa...we all move on.

I feel like the point of this is "Toronto passed, not Stamkos", but what if he required 20 mil? He needed more because he didn't want to go. So much for hometown discount...

Hometown discount.

No kidding huh, never imagined his ask would be that high. I guess given the tax difference the actual takehome is probably not that much better but still... Would have been nice to see him on the Leafs but not at that price, and I'm honestly glad he stayed with TB, love seeing stars stay loyal.

What does that tell ya?

There's really no way for us to know either way. Not that it matters.

Anyway, Stamkos in Tampa with a good contract feels like the best outcome. I love seeing players stay with their teams through their whole career.

Yes there is he signed with Tampa.

So his agent can tell the other teams he wants to play for that he has had meetings with the Leafs. It's happened to the Oilers dozens of times.

Pretty much. It's a great bargaining chip, you knew a team like Toronto would give him a lot of $$$, so then you come back and put it on the table to bargain for a deal with a team he actually would sign with.

Stamkos never had any intention of playing with the Leafs.

He did it well though, sending out indications that he wanted to play in Toronto but only did it for selfish reasons.

He used the hearts of Leafs fans and the organization to extort more cash out of Yzerman. Yzerman never budged. He went back to Tampa with his tail between his legs.

Tampa fans on here at least, turned on him like white on rice and you know they weren't really wrong. He is not the best player on his team and in the end he didn't get more money, so good for Tampa.

Nothing against Tampa but I hope he never wins a cup with them, to me he's proven he's a piece of ****.

Who the **** likes at least 3 tweets accidentally as he said he did about playing with the Leafs.
