Will fix everything
I’ve got a better one for you: how about inviting somebody to drive 1400 miles for an in-person interview and then telling you they’re going in another direction?

My favorite is a job that IN THE DESCRIPTION said they didn't care about coding skills, flew me out to San Francisco....and gave me a live coding test during it.

That was a nice waste of 3 days.

I always enjoy the things where they say, "The successful applicant must have at least 5-7 years experience in [coding language that has only existed for 3 years]."

Other end of the scale - One of my colleagues learnt COBOL. Now in his mid-50s and he’s like “everyone kept telling me I should skill into another coding language because it has no future. Now heaps of shit is still running on it and anyone who can code in COBOL is getting paid big bucks because companies are watching everyone who knows it retiring.”

Today is the first day of HS hockey tryouts.

The varsity coach told my son that he wants him to play forward this year on Friday. This after he had him switch to goalie two years ago.

We had fun getting him pants and a backup stick yesterday and he scavenged my forward bag for skates, shoulder pads, a helmet, and he even took the bag.

What... the... hell.

Nate gave the right answer when asked: I'll do whatever is best for the team.

The frustrating part for me is that this came so late and he wasn't able to skate up at any of the captain's practices. He is splitting time in goal with his club team, so this is the inverse of his sophomore year where he was the 3rd goalie for the HS team and skated up with his club team.

The HS team has 4 other goalies this year. So, Nate is hoping to get a little bit of ice time this way versus maybe getting garbage time in goal on senior night if he was a goalie.

We also are expecting that he is asked to jump in goal with the HS team if an injury or COVID hits one of the top 2 goalies. Even the backup is unlikely to play. Their starting goalie has been on varsity since 8th grade and the lock #1 goalie since he was a freshman. Lots of Jr A & Prep school teams wanted him but prep was too expensive and his parents want him to finish HS before heading up north to play Jr A hockey where they don't care as much about school.

I'm totally for goalies playing both goalie (as their primary position) and skating out when it's not their game to start. But that's crap.

If he's getting net time with his club team, then I'd recommend letting him skate with his HS team.

It was the latest in a long line of last straws. I admit, I haven’t looked much in the last few months and I am back to syphoning off old retirement fund to meet bills and rent. I hate life.

Edit - my life. Not life as we know it or anything like that.

My frustration isn't the position thing but the lack of communication and dropping this on him/us roughly 72 hours before tryouts start.

My son is playing hockey purely for fun as lacrosse is his #1 sport. I just hope he still has fun with this curveball being thrown at him.

I celebrated a milestone in my game presentation career on Friday: 100 NCAA games with Canisius Hockey. They ginned up a nice graphic for Twitter, got me a game puck with the milestone/date/opponent on it, and the team brought me into the room for congratulations. I had to give a speech!

I've honestly had so much fun with this, and can't wait to see what the next 100 (& hopefully more) games bring!

He handled it a lot better than I did. I learned that life isn't fair at just 11 years old. The head coaches son was the QB [surprise surprise] and the assistant coaches son was the RB [surprise surprise]. I replaced them after injuries and vastly outperformed both of them. Undefeated and over 200 yards rushing in 8 straight games [only 10 games in a season]. I was happy that I finally seized the opportunity, but wait! Their kids weren't injured anymore and I was promptly replaced. I won league MVP that year and quit playing football .

It's almost like putting the team first has been pounded into him at home by a dad who coaches hockey and soccer.

:sarcasm:

The lack of communication is par for the course for this coach. As someone who puts a big priority on communicating clearly with players and parents, this is one of the things that can drive me nuts more than it might annoy other people.

Update after yesterday's skate from my son when I asked how it went: Hard getting back to skating but not bad

Irony of the day: my son’s HS team is down to two goalies already. Lost one when they moved my kid to forward. The #1s little brother hasn’t shown up to tryouts after going to off season work. And the 3rd string goalie is out with COVID.

No company who makes candidates drive 1400mi for an interview deserves to hire anyone. I would have demanded full reimbursement plus 3 days worth of pay for the time (even if you were unemployed).

Other end of the scale - One of my colleagues learnt COBOL. Now in his mid-50s and he’s like “everyone kept telling me I should skill into another coding language because it has no future. Same discussion with my FIL at dinner tonight - wife's parents are celebrating their 50th anniversary; they eloped at age 18. He'll turn 69yo in December, still working, has a degree in accounting, but is self-taught at computer systems / developer. Knows some deep specialized stuff in systems maintenance, archives, and certain software packages that his company wants to obsolete but fails to realize / admit they lack fully developed / functional replacements for. He wants to retire (he has other business projects he has the energy and interest to do) but they keep recognizing their errors and throwing more money at him to stay. It's always nice to be wanted, and for higher-ups to admit they were wrong.

The covid bumps are real. Met a good dozen new girls last night that left their few months old babies in the province to come work.

My Boston buddy, but the good Boston ie Southtowns snow belt Boston, was handing out cheap Hello Kitty toys so he had a large queue of girls begging. Made it easy to get quick 5W info from the new girls. Seems that bald head, beard and walking cane turned me into a desired commodity in a tourist free party town
