Speculation: Speculation, rumours and trade & free agency ideas thread

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
I feel like NJ would be a good trade partner for us.

To NJ - Helle, 8OA, Perfetti

To Wpg - Markstrom (25% retained for both remaining years), Bratt, Mercer, 2nd Rd pick 35OA
Markstrom hasn't been good for 5 years and was brutal last season. He's negative value in a trade. Bratt's the only good piece coming back here, while the Jets are giving up an elite goalie, 8th overall and a decent young winger.

Interesting approach. Losing Byram and potentially Tuch after the first playoff run in 15 years hurts, so the natural fix is... let's check... to hate the idea of strengthening the roster with pieces that aren't contributing next year? Do I have this right?

I thought the blueprint of a WPG-BUF trade for Hellebuyck was clear as day 24 hours ago, and now things have changed and it's even clearer. We take on UPL and Norris, which gives them the cap flexibility to keep Tuch. For that, we charge either #4+, Helenius+, or Östlund++. If they bite on McLeod+UPL instead of Norris+UPL, that works too (just don't think the cap does for the Sabres). One plus means a minor piece.

We can afford to take the gamble on whether Norris is healthy enough, because we'll be left for a top C prospect for our troubles anyway. UPL is a good enough replacement for now - we aren't going to be better next year, but if we're dealing Hellebuyck, that's just how it is.

They'll be left with two of Östlund/Helenius/"Björck/Malhotra/Stenberg" to sort out their forward depth chart. Part of the value prop for the Sabres is getting to keep Tuch without jeopardising their long-term extension to Benson. They improve their goaltending massively.

It makes so much sense. What doesn't make sense is for Buffalo to look at their current situation and decide that keeping all their futures is worth it. Thompson, Samuelsson, and Dahlin are all in their prime - now it's not the time to wait for the next wave to roll around.

If we get 4 they don't have access to Bjorck, Malhotra or Stenberg.

Chevys problem is he let it be known what he was asking for Helle…now anything less is a fail and makes him look weak…if he’d have kept his cone of silence on, he could have taken picks and prospects and whatever and come out looking like a winner…or at least looking good
GMs can spin anything and most fans will go along. More important is over asking in negotiations with other GMs so you have other options. While I have some concerns with Chevy, is ability to grind out good trades is among the best in the league. Other GMs and agents have commented many times about Chevy's ability to grind out good deals.

this is the 2nd time GMs sort of were a bit cooler on Helle's value in recent years.

2023: NJD, BUF allegedly passed on trying to trade him, ends up re-signing with the Jets on the condition they're competitive

2026: Dreger saying the offers have not been good for Hellebuyck..... i think he's been on the market for at least a month now? maybe more? hard to say for sure as it seems like both the Jets + Helle's side were keeping his under wraps, esp. with the Playoffs going on.
It's not surprising, simply put GM's and really anyone don't value goalies like they do forwards and even D men, they still believe that the guy stopping pucks from going into the net is simply not as important and therefore no need to waste many assets getting one.

It's why we have never really seen a goalie go for a massive haul, I know we all want one and I truly believe Helle is worth one but the more I look at it the more I think nobody is going to pony up and pay Chevy what he wants.

I hope I am wrong though and we see an absolute fleecing real soon.
