Speculation: Speculation, rumours and trade & free agency ideas thread

Also goalies are different than skaters. Both teams got to the final this year with sub optimal goaltending that got hot at the right time of the year (until it went stone cold in the final for both teams until Buzzi picked up the ball).

That being said Bob was the difference for Florida vs Edmonton two cup runs in a row. Once again back to debating myself
get a room

I think the tandem debate works if you don't have a top 2-3 goalie in the world, like if the choice was between a tandem vs say markstrom you wouldn't pay for markstrom but a tandem vs a 3x vezina 1x hart on a very good contract is a lot different

After his presser I was fully in the camp of Helle is staying and was just putting Chevy on notice…now, after the last week…I’m not so sure keeping him would be a good idea, considering the rumours, reports, and speculation…gonna make the room stressful
I still think he’s moved to FLA but that could be wishful thinking…I guess we will see eventually

this is the 2nd time GMs sort of were a bit cooler on Helle's value in recent years.

2023: NJD, BUF allegedly passed on trying to trade him, ends up re-signing with the Jets on the condition they're competitive

2026: Dreger saying the offers have not been good for Hellebuyck..... i think he's been on the market for at least a month now? maybe more? hard to say for sure as it seems like both the Jets + Helle's side were keeping his under wraps, esp. with the Playoffs going on.

I know people see a sellers market right now but don't you think it will be like this next summer as well? it's not like the cap is staying flat, it's going up and teams are going to have room to keep their players resulting in another terrible free agent class

if we have another down year we will have jmo/samberg going into the final year of their contracts and allowing them to talk extension with other teams could get us a bigger package in what is said to be a better draft then if we were to trade them now with two years left on their contracts

If we move Helle for a 2C, then fill the net from FA and have a good year, we could keep our remains core intact…but if we shit the bed on the return, how the season goes, and/or by keeping Helle and he’s bitter, it’s likely we see an exodus

Things could get ugly quickly. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

And that's what could be keeping other GMs from making the offer the Jets are looking for. They realize that a 33 year old goalie might just be on the downslide.

Yup, though I was only thinking of the Medal of Freedom glow. Even a good year and his value goes down because he will be a year older and the Olys will be ancient history. Maybe, if he wins another Vezina it goes up. Anything less, it goes down.

well if nothing happens regards to Helle then it's on Chevy to have this team a cup contender for 2026-27. which probably requires acquisitions.

Value in value out type trades so goodbye #8 is the only way I see us improving next season.

Just can’t see us doing nothing and the fan base being satisfied

Fans and add the core players. Chevy doesn’t have a good enough team to just shuffle the deck chairs and add filler free agents. He will need to make a trade of some sort.

Yes from what I heard both Helle and Schiefele were surprised by how cool the markets were for them that summer which might have led to them re-upping with Winnipeg. After that Helle did go on to win a Vezina, Hart, Jennings, and an Olympic gold so it ended up being a good thing for Winnipeg.

That being said he turns 34 late this season, he obviouly wants a change, 3rd and 20 and wind is at our back. I still think the top thing we get for him in the knock down effect of the trade……..drafting higher and better sooner, maybe other core members wanting out or not wanting to extend thus kick starting a reluctant player exodus rebuild (spoon full of medicine).

Chevys problem is he let it be known what he was asking for Helle…now anything less is a fail and makes him look weak…if he’d have kept his cone of silence on, he could have taken picks and prospects and whatever and come out looking like a winner…or at least looking good

I’m not sure anyone is really clamouring for either. I think the difference is Norris would be the center piece of a Helly trade while Dach would be a relatively cheap acquisition.
Norris shouldn't be the centerpiece of any trade...

and there's nothing that precludes him from trading those acquired picks for players now... teams do it time and time again.
Hey guys - Sens fan here

I was wondering if DeMelo would be made available and if so - what the ask might be?
i don't think the Jets are / would be shopping him around.... if so, maybe a late 1st or 2 2nds sort of deal?

Considering the mid draft class maybe a late-mid 1st?

Ullmark got kastelic and 25 overall - if Jarmo can prove out UPL's trade value I'd assume he could use it to chisel down Chevy's ask a bit (although I really have no idea how trades develop or are negotiated by GMs)
Ullmark had a way better track record than UPL when he got moved.

The 5 seasons leading up to Ullmark's trade vs. UPL's last 5.

Ullmark UPL
.915.917 (9 GP)
.917.892
.917.910
.938.887
.915.910

UPL is 3 years younger now than Ullmark was at the time of his trade to Ottawa (27 vs. 30).

Ullmark's average SV% over that 5 season stretch was .921, QS% = .661, GSAA = +84.0 total, RBS (Really Bad Starts) = 9 (out of 180 starts).

UPL's last 5 years: SV% = .900, QS% = .558, GSAA = -9.0, RBS = 35 (out of 181 starts).

For comparison, Hellebuyck's last 5 years: SV% = .915, QS% = .647, GSAA = +111.6, RBS = 35 (out of 309).

Ullmark at the time of his trade is a closer comp to Hellebuyck than to UPL (except in starts, where Hellebuyck blows everyone out of the water).
