PS5 Backwards Compatibility: Can You Play PS4 Games on PlayStation 5?

There are only 10 games + PT that are 100% not backwards compatible/transferable. There's a short list that "may exhibit errors" but I'd be surprised if they were serious.

Fallout isn't on either list but who knows, Bethesda games finding new ways to break wouldn't surprise me.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I think I’ll take the chance.

It seems like backward compatibility & data transferability are linked together for the vast majority of titles, I thought there was a clearer separation between the two.

As far as I know if it's backwards compat you can transfer save data, and it does it automatically when you do a system transfer.

No, I’m in retail and we do business with Costco so apparently they’ve put a select few aside for us. More or less a preorder, I won’t believe it until it’s in my hands though
Like to give to your company or to individually sell to you?

I dont think people are playing 5 games at a time, but 1 game at a time? That is just as far-fetched. Just today, I was playing Dragons crown, switched to the worms beta to see how it was, then went back to dragons crown. These aren't even super large games but going through the menus each time you load them up takes time.

I would bet that most people have a quick go to multiplayer game they spend hundreds of hours on, Cod, Apex, etc, and then mess with other games as well as having a single player game they play when they have free time.

Regardless, I kind of look at it like this, why would you want less features? The competition has it, why not?

Also, the feature is almost definitely coming. Theres like 200 GB taken up by the ps5 OS, how much you want to bet thats allocation for a quick-resume feature?

I meant to say "one game or two" at a time. By the way, multiplayer online does not have the quick resume that I'm aware of and I do think most people who play a bunch of games outside of streamers are people who play a lot of multiplayer games. But since there is no quick resume there you go.

Put aside for a certain few of us at the company. No discounts or anything, and still have to have a Costco card
Wow, nice for you but sucks for everyone else who basically has no shot at one if they putting them aside for people.

It does have quick resume for MP think, but you just get booted from the servers. The same thing happens on ps4 when you suspend a game for netflix on current gen. The game is still suspended though, you just need to re-connect to online. It takes like half a second even on ps4.

Which kind of brings that to mind the fact that ps4 does already have the quick resume feature. Just for switching between media apps and a single game, quick resume its just a logical progression of that.

"Unlike Destiny and some other online multiplayer games that boot you out of the game when your presence times out on their server"
Xbox Series X/S 'Quick Resume' feature was designed for me.

"You’ll get booted from multiplayer or other online-connected games.

Trying to make use of Quick Resume during a multiplayer game might be a little weird. How many people are really planning on dipping out of a round of Halo to, say, repaint a car in Forza Horizon 4 before jumping back in the fray? Still, the point remains: If you try to switch games during a Halo 4 match, expect a one-way trip to the lobby.
Destiny 2, a multiplayer game that requires constant connectivity but is often enjoyed as a single-player, player-vs.-environment experience, is even more strict. Even when I’ve just been hovering in orbit—and not standing on any shared world alongside other players—I’ve been sent right back to the title screen. Solo Guardians, take note."

Weirdly, I actually addressed this in that comment but deleted it because I thought it would be an insulting strawman for me to characterize that you or anyone would think I was actually saying to literally play two games simultaneously and bounce back and forth between two games at the exact same time.

Obviously, nobody does that, but it saves time suspending a game, even if you're kicked from the servers. I literally do this on ps4. I suspend multiplayer games all the time to watch netflix or amazon prime and come back to being kicked. It still saves time versus booting a game cold and going through menus. Usually if the game is designed right it will instantly try to log back in without kicking all the way back to the start menu, but even when it does it still saves time over just starting the game cold.

Also, I said everything you're saying in the comment you quoted.

I think the point that is being missed here is that this is basically a current gen feature, not a next one. Load times on the PS5 and the XboxX/S games are so negligible that quick resume saves you maybe a couple of seconds? If they had this on the Xbone then it would have been a game changer, but they didn't and now it isn't really needed.

I think you might be buying into the "no load times" thing too hard if you're expecting cartridge level load times. But assuming that was the case and you were right. Even then, even if the load times were literally non-existent and the only time saved was going through menus and splash screens, so what? Why not still have quick resume? Isn't it better that the console should offer conveniences and not just be a pc in a box?

I saw this same argument about rest mode in another thread (actually it might be this thread), people insisting that absolutely nobody wants updates installed, games downloaded or the game suspended while in standby and that nobody uses it because it uses a whole 3 watts of power or that you can just play another game while the updates are installed. Makes no sense. If its a useful feature, they should implement it. Tons of people use the suspend feature on ps4, why not expand it?

And like the rest mode feature on ps and xbox concerns of "wasting energy" let me get ahead of that for quick resume. I believe quick resume works with xbox even if you unplug or turn off the console. The suspended games are likely stored in unused files on the SSD and would use no electricity or resources while suspended.

I didn't watch the video, but I assume it shows fast load times?

Miles Morales is a first party (cross gen) game. What about the next gen Ubisoft games or cyberpunk or the first AAA non-cross gen games? But again, even if the load times were non-existent....the rest of my comment.

Can't tell you about other games as they haven't been released yet.

As to rest mode, it is fantastic. I use it all the time. There is basically no energy drain and it's nice to have updates done before my work day is finished. I'm not saying that quick resume is a bad feature, It just would have been more useful on last gens consoles with their longer load times.

Of course nothing's been released yet, including Miles Morales.

I agree that it'd be more useful on current gen, that doesn't invalidate it on next gen. If you're about shorter load times, you'd logically be for no load times, hence quick resume.

Question. From what I understand, the launch version of this has less than 1 TB of storage and this can not be expanded as I read somewhere. It's also really friggin big, desk space is a premium imo.

So with that said, you guys think that by 2022, we might get a version which will have that expandable storage? I for sure think we're going to get a slim version at some point because I feel like one of the reasons they made it so big to begin with was to help sell a slim version more when it inevitably comes.

It's only got like 625gb of useable storage. A couple caveats: you can use an external HDD to play ps4 games off of. Not ps5 games though, just ps4. If you want to get an external SSD which will allow you to reap the benefits of the internal SSD, you have to wait until Sony releases its vetted models it recommends.

I would bet there will be a console refresh in 2-3 years that might change that, but who knows.

Honestly, this past generation, I never had more than 3 or 4 BIG games installed, plus a bunch of smaller indie games. So it's not a problem for me, but I could see it being a huge pain in the ass for people that like to jump around between more games.

I do wonder if 3rd parties will work around this though.

Like 'Screw it, this a multiplatform title, we're not doing anything special to make use of the PS5's insane SSD, if you have an external SSD of this minimum speed, then you can play it off that'.

Sony could potentially stop them though...

It's actually 648GB.

It'll be a bigger deal for those who get the digital-onky consoles. 648GB of usable space at this point is head scratching, especially with no vetted alternatives.
