Noah Cates is scoring points at the rate of 1.1/60 at 5v5. He’s played a significant amount of time with the most skilled FWDS on the team. He’s not a Center. He produces like a 4th liner at 5v5 with relatively high quality teammates.

It seems like they just assumed Couts would never come back and began transitioning a winger they thought would have the best success if groomed for a year. Hayes was really that bad in the middle they would rather go this route?
