So, who's watching the OIympics?

Without getting too much in details the article says that the Norwegian team has brought to the oympics quite a lot of asthma meds. More than Sweden, Finland, Germany etc.
Basically they intend to have inhalers that are personal, namely each athlete, if needed, will have a personal inhaler, without having to share it with others.
They also justifies the use of aerosol machines also with the fact that saline solution seem to have a good effect on breathing problems.
Pretty much they say that they prefer not to have to rely on the olympic pharmacy and clinic in case treatments are needed and that anyways the big majority of what they take with them will go back unused.
...and that asthma meds do not give any performance enhancing effect anyways

I will be, it's hockey so I'll watch anyway. I prefer the amateurs playing as well. Rather this than a 2 week break during the middle of the NHL season.

Reactions: Blueshirt Special
I usually watch some of the Olympics, particularly figure skating and hockey. I am shutting down my NHL viewing for two weeks to watch something different. I don't think they even have the exciting Wednesday night rivalries on NBC anyways during that time.

Living in Norway, we have to follow the olympics.
I will watch the olympics, in the weekend.
In the weekdays i probably listen to some on the radio.

Yeah I think it's kind of a mandatory part of being allowed to live in the country.
Just got an email from the IT of my company explaining how to set up the internal net to stream the events. Last time they invited all the employes to watch the 50k and 30k on a big screen in the conference room.
Only in Norway

That´s just perfect.

The next 3 weeks Norwegians will be at work, but not function more than 50 %.

I'm actually really curious to see how Canada and the US (and Sweden as well) will fare in hockey without their top guns so I'll pay attention. I may care less but it's intriguing.

Russia should be the clear top dog here, they've got the goal-tending, firepower, and cohesion/chemistry since it's basically the top two teams in the KHL with some others. Don't know much about their defense. I know Sorokin and Shesterkin are young but they've both been pretty damn solid with their respective teams. No bias. Kinda funny that two great friends are the two leading goalie prospects for NHL-affiliation and both will end up in NYC around the same time, as rivals. Should be fun as hell.

For those who don't know: Ilya Sorokin, 22, Isles prospect. Igor Shesterkin (Shestyorkin), 22, Rangers prospect. Consistently ranked in top goalie prospects. Latest being Button's top 50 with Sorokin at #7 and Shesterkin at #9 overall (so #1 and #2 goalies), both having had great success up until now. Fun stuff.

Probably the only sporting event worse than an NHL all star game. Its completely ridiculous. That being said, I will watch some of the hockey.

I will be watching! I am an Olympics junkie and have been since 1964. I was between jobs during the Sydney Olympics. I watched so much coverage that it was like "I saw this live! Why are they showing this event again?"

I might catch the odd highlight or follow game updates online, but I won't go out of my way to watch any games aside from maybe the semis or final.

It's still Olympics hockey but it has no real feeling of significance to it. Although that's not to say some interesting story lines won't emerge - I could see Canada or USA vs Russia in the playoff round having a compelling sense of David vs Goliath. But no one will have much to brag about regardless of who takes gold.

It's like a meaningless tournament in a meaningful setting. Feels weird.

"Would love to watch a bunch of mediocre has-beens and players that were never good enough."
- Not me

Will watch rest of Olympics where the best athletes at their sport are competing.

They are not amateurs though. They are all professionals. This myth about amateurs in the Olympics summer and winter in all sporting disciplines is just that. Bettman as usual did the sport a great disservice by not showcasing the best at an event that is watched globally.

Everyone who considers themselves as hockey fans should watch the tournament. Having star players from NHL hasn't previously meant the game is anymore exciting to watch, so I don't see why the games couldn't be as exciting as they are any other year with NHL players out there. At least now we have bunch of people having their once in a lifetime opportunity to compete in Olympics. I'm sure they all aim to be give all they got which should lead into some exciting and unpredictable hockey.

If anything, not having NHL players actually means we might have some other team than Canada winning the gold which brings another exciting factor to the tournament for us non-Canadians.

Maybe it's just me but I feel like some of the people just don't like when their country isn't the clear favorite here like they are usually in hockey tournaments.

Well, I am truly shocked after seeing this image...
OG have turned into a political farce. Yes, russians have their own problems, but to to think that they are the only one is just comical...
All big nations have their hands dirthy, usung all kinds of doping and it must be stopped.

You are missing out on the fact that the Russians were systematically cheating. It just wasn't the weightlifters or the swimmers or the cross country skiers. Practically their entire team in Sochi was on some kind of illegal substance or another! They had some kind of fake lab to cover up positive tests as well as attempting to mask some of the drug use so it was not detected.

You sound like Dick Pound, a Canadian man with WADA, with his insane statement that 1/3 of NHLers were on drugs. He could not come up with proof for a single one! I am sure that there are individual athletes on other teams that dope. We know about Marion Jones for example. I just don't think that it is nearly as wide spread as you are claiming it is. Most of the tests are pretty sensitive. The problem is where a country tries to use chemistry to outwit the testers by coming up with something that works to improve performance without being tested for or detected. That is what the Russians did.

The Olympics turned into political farce in Munich in 1972. The 11 Israeli athletes were killed by Palestinian terrorists. Then the USA got screwed in basketball by the officials resetting the clock to 3 seconds three times so the Soviets could score a basket and win the gold medal. The guy that ordered that done was an English guy from the Olympics who was a Communist and had no right to come down out of the stands and tell the clock operator and the refs to do that. That is why Doug Collins and the other players never accepted the silver medal. They won the game a couple of times but got robbed of the gold medal by Cold War politics and officials ignoring the rules!

I'll be watching with more interest than I've had in years. I'm glad the NHL is not in it. And even though it is not going to be a "pure" platform for amateurs, I'm excited to possibly see some "unknowns" potentially rise to the occasion and attract some attention.
