Because there are a lot of people on this board who are stuck to the dated notion of a second contract being a bridge contract to the third contract where the guy cashes in. But the NHL has gotten away from that, and guys who earn it are getting significant money on their second contract.

Slava had a terrible year, no one disputes that, but as a 22/23 year old defenseman he had 25 points in 48 games in the regular season and followed it up with 6G and 13 points in 18 playoff games and was the Kings best playoff defender. What did people expect him to get paid?

Same thing with Pearson and Toffoli, if they have 45-50 points this season what do people think,l they are going to say, well damn we are only 22 we are going to sign for 1.5 million? ya goodluck with that.

I doubt Pearson or Toffoli reach even 40 points this coming season. People are expecting way too much out of those kids.

Toffoli didn't even crack 30(29 in 62 games), that's with top six and PP time. Lets be realistic folks. Toffoli is by far the most skilled prospect the Kings have (a true top six player).

Pearson is more of a worker bee, like Williams. They are not going to post 45+ points in their Sophomore seasons.

The PP would have to be top Ten (with them on it) also the Kings would have to be a 3.0 GPG team during the regular season for them to pop those kind of numbers.

Not going to happen.

Everyone is talking about how King will likely make 1.5 million, he had 15G 15A 30p the vast majority at Even Strength.

Toffoli was not in the top 6 most of the season. He was 10th amongst forwards in ice time per game. Guys like King, Lewis, and Stoll got more ice time than him.

When players break out, it usually happens very quickly. If TT plays in the top 6 all season, and stays healthy, I'd be willing to bet he cracks 20+ goals.

The vast majority of his minutes were in scoring roles, or top six situations.

Time on the ice does not equate line combo's Pearson/Toffoli even the playoff's only received 10/12 minutes but all of it was top six minutes.

Crack 20 goals ? Sure that's possible, Crack 40 to 50 points ? That's a tall order. I would say 25 to 35 points is more realistic for the kids next season. They will struggle at times next season (no doubt) and bounce around the lineup (Pearson especially).

We all better hope and pray these kids don't skip the Gym this off-season. Real easy too celebrating that cup win.

No shot in hell a Dean Lombardi/Darryl Sutter team signs Vanek. None.

In a fantasy world, I would love to trade for Evander Kane if Gaborik is not re-signed.

FA's that intrigue me are:

Ales Hemsky on a 2 year deal, 11 million type of deal. People will say some of the same things they said about Gaborik - injuries, too finesse, doesn't "fit" - but I believe he has the speed, high end skill, and playmaking to mesh very well with Kopitar and flourish with the Kings.

Dany Heatley on a one year flier, prove-it type deal around 3-4 million. He has definitely lost a step and is on the decline, but he still has a pretty wicked shot and has always been able to put the puck in the net. Put him with some solid line-mates on a good team and maybe you salvage some of the remaining gas left in his tank. Not a bad guy to have for some secondary scoring on the third line that can slide up to the top 6 if an injury occurs and help the power play.

Martin Havlat on a one year flier in the 2-4 million range. Another guy who has been injury prone over his career but when healthy can still play IMO. Again, not a bad depth/secondary scorer to have on the third line on a one year deal who can jump into the top 6 if you need him. You could do worse. I'm not worried about his lack of physicality.

Joe Vitale. Not a replacement for Gaborik, but always loved the toughness, grit, and physicality this guy brought for the Penguins. Nice addition to the bottom 6 who plays an LA Kings brand of hockey.

If the Kings can't come to terms with Gaborik, why would they suddenly be able to meet Vanek's contract demands?

Why would (some of) you want Penner back to his underachieving regular season ways, so then "playoff" Penner can upgrade his production to Dwight King levels?

losingsand has an interesting suggestion of Iginla.

Otherwise, we'll have a very interesting training camp.

I think we can all agree that Slava deal is a mistake that Lombardi won't be making again with Muzzin/Toffoli/Pearson.

No we all can't. I think Slava's deal is fine.

Slava had a terrible year

I love how people throw quotes like this out. Slava did not have a terrible year. He had an ok year, maybe a little disappointing unless you factor in, OH YEAH THE TEAM WON THE STANLEY ********** CUP.

The guy is a TWENTY-FOUR YEAR-OLD defenseman who has been a key piece of two Cup winning teams. It is flabbergasting how people want to throw him on the trash pile.

Voynov didn't have that bad of a season. He struggled here and there but still played well in his top 4 role. Voynov paid his dues in the AHL (and stayed when he could have went back to Russia) and then had a good year and playoffs when he was called up. Then had a great year and super playoffs and got paid for it all. Doughty is the one that got paid for 2 good years and a super third year (Norris caliber).

So if Toffoli or Pearson have great years which could or couldn't happen then they will get paid an the Kings lose Williams, Stoll or Richards. But it's more likely they will have average seasons and get small bridge contracts like Brown, Muzzin, Lewis, Clifford, King all got. So we are all just arguing over things with no knowing how the outcomes will happen. Let's just hope for the best where the Kings win and the kids help in doing that. The cap will figure itself out. :p:

Voynov had a bad year. I don't want him traded, and am not throwing him on the trash pile, but at the same time I'm calling a spade a spade and saying he had a down year.

Plan B if he doesn't sign will probably be to hold on to the money and just get through this year and try and see if Ryan wants to come back to So Cal. And I will be more upset as a Kings fan that I have been in a very long time if we have to go this route.

Well I guess this question has officially been answered with the Philly/Lumbus trade earlier today.
