i used to laugh at the opinion that babcock is the problem but the look around the league and the best coaches get the best from their team

look at the goddamn islanders. there roster is just garbage and yet trotz ALWAYS has his team playing hungry. same could be said for julien and cassidy.

clearly the young stars on this team have started tuning him out

Hmmm the team is getting healthy and heating up who could have seen that coming?

Perhaps Babcock isn't an issue perhaps it was health and a Backup goalie if only that was said before

Yeah it had nothing to do with losing a top 2 center, top 9 winger and top 4 D

No that had nothing to do with it.

People aren’t judging Babcock based on the first 17 games of the season. Don’t know how many times this has to be said.

He’s going to get the year and his future lies on our playoff performance.

I agree. But we don’t know how many people were participating in that poll, the massive swings so quickly potentially tells me not many people were involved and therefore one vote can swing the percentages very easily.

let’s hope that’s what it is or there are a lot of mindless sheep out there who just believe whatever the panelists say

We been missing those guys every first round of the playoffs for 3 years now?

people aren’t in babcocks back because of this season only but surely you know that

No the 1st year was a young team coming up short against Washington and then the next 2 years Kadri chose to be an idiot and it cost them, that is especially true last season.

Kadri being an idiot is not Babcock's fault Kadri being an idiot is Kadri's fault and it's why he's in Colorado.

The reality is untill now there was ZERO argument for firing Babcock and until we hit April there still isn't one

Why does Dubas get a pass for his ineptitude while Babcock is to blame for all the deficiencies?

The team is flawed.

Babcock isn’t a GM, nor a biologist or a surgeon.

Dubas has blind loyalty from the advanced stats community. Many are invested in the gimmick so they wouldn’t dare be critical of him, he’s too important to the cause.

Far too many people on here think they are capable of coaching a professional sports team. Most people just post random twitter nonsense to make themselves feel better.

Players ultimately win on the ice, coaches are praised too much when they win, and criticized too much when they lose.

The last PP when we scored looked to me like the coaches just told the players to go out and wing it...no set plays or entries..and they moved around a lot and actually looked pretty good. I just think this guy is just too rigid in his thinking. There is no "leeway" when it comes to the PP...we do the double drop back every time...etc.

I would love...love for a reporter to ask this just 1 time: "Mike, why do you insist on doing a double drop back that doesn't seem to be effective along with an easy to read PP that consists of AM taking the shot or Marner trying the seem pass to AM to take the shot with ZERO player movement in the meantime? Did you not say in training camp that coach McFarland would be changing the PP each game based on the pre-scout of the opponent? Speaking of McFarland, Did you notice that his PP in FLA never used the drop back to gain the zone and now they use it exclusively...is that your influence Mike? or maybe he called Jim Hiller and asked for advice perhaps?"

The team still look like they are playing to hide their weaknesses, rather than shape the game according to their strengths. I'm not sure if that's actually a worse tactic, but it at least goes pretty much completely opposite of my preferences.

I'm really starting to think the team is going through a rough stretch as they try to embrace and adapt to Babcock's goals for them. And I think that goal is to transition from run and gun regular season style to a simpler, tougher playoff-winning style.

One interesting comment from yesterday's interview on Overdrive was that while he's happy we've got our core locked up for 5 years, you never want to look too far in the future as you never really know what's coming. So we're in the window and we need to try to win right now (and keep doing that for the next 4 years, I assume).

Agreed. It looks weird at the moment. Also as if theyre uncomfortable with something. But as an outsider it becomes difficult to figure out why that is

This is the time of year for the team to work on their weaknesses.... I'd rather the team figure their shit out now, than come playoff time.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you.

Well that's one of way of looking at it, I guess this would an appropriate counterpoint:

Babcock has blind loyalty from those stuck in the past and they wouldn’t dare be critical of him, he’s too important to the cause

I've thought exactly this on many occasions, most recently when Kerfoot skated out for the opening faceoff last night. I don't understand why we don't even try to dictate how things play out, especially in a home game in which we are the solid favourites.

he was dictating,,kerfs line has been arguably our most potent 2 way 5 v 5 line

OK I guess you could argue that, fair point. Maybe that is what he was thinking.

Oh the other hand, maybe not. We can't know what he was thinking obviously but sending out a checking line to start the game against another teams first line is something that he has often done in the past. I don't like it, I think it's a reactive strategy as opposed to "shape the game according to their strengths" as Nithoniniel said earlier.

Babcock has lots of faults but people pointing to first round exits really need to dig a little.....no a lot deeper. Have people already forgotten that most pundits said last year would be the first time we even MADE the playoffs?

Babcock is getting them to play this style in order to minimize their weaknesses, but its severely minimizing their strengths as well. He's taken all creativity from this team. Its like he doesn't realize how talented our players are. Obviously in general minimizing weaknesses is a good thing, but if it minimizes our strengths even more, then its a net negative.

If this was truly a temporary style of play that Babcock is doing to improve team defense or whatever, then sure, its a good idea. But Babcock will not change his strategies come playoff time.

I neither like or dislike Babcock. I think we found success too early IMO. But I get what hes trying to do, and I think people need to look at the bigger picture. Nobody thought the Leafs would be that good this fast with such a young group, and I think it may have lead to some enlarged heads and egos for the younger guys. Now that they have tasted failure 2 years in a row (not counting Washington), maybe now they are understanding what it takes to win, and winning ugly is sometimes necessary. When Matthews realizes he can dominate a game like a Crosby, which means defensively as well, than the reins may get loosened (I hope). The same goes for Marner/Nylander etc.

Lets rewind a bit....

What "style" is Babcock deploying that minimizes their weakness but also minimizes their strengths??

Also, what does a "creative" goal look like? I thought our goals last night were pretty creative....

Team save% up to 17th but only 24th 5v5.

Finally having good goaltending really makes a difference doesnt it?

Its almost like that was the big problem and not the insanity going on in these Babcock threads.

All coaches have their faults but it was so over the top in here, it was blinding the real issues.....and I think this team is going to keep winning driving some around here further over the edge. Dont get too invested in the Babcock stuff if theres an obvious issue out of his control.

Andersen digging himself out of the hole but still a negative -.02 GSAA/60 5v5 on the year. For goalies who have played more than 200 minutes, he's now up to 32 place and will pass Bernier and Jake Allen for 30th with another decent performance.
