I too think they'll look at this cluster**** of a team and decide to mask the underlying issues by acquiring a big name for two months.

It might do something good. I don't think it will amount to much, though. Too many parts of this team are not performing up to the standard.

I'd say their poor effort has been the biggest underlying issue over the past two months, before what any kind of tinkering you do based on advanced statistics. It's not like switching Laine and Connor last night was the missing factor between a win and a 7-1 loss (just one example, not saying that's your claim).

They can make whatever adjustments to the lines and systems that they want, if they're not putting in the effort, they're not going to win. Something that the team is seeming to echo.

How many different ways of saying '****ing break up Scheifele and Wheeler' can we come up with?

Leadership is showing your people how to do it. Lead by example, as they say. If your leaders get away with whatever, it might just trickle down the lineup. Maurice and whoever the leaders in the room are need to be accountable, and then they'll see how the others respond. If Maurice is giving his leaders too much power, he needs to take it back or resign.

What is obvious is that we need to stop wasting potential. Give Perreault minutes. Give Niku minutes. Give Petan a shot. Test some new things and see what happens. Not doing that is the equivalent of being content with the status quo, which has been a catastrophe. I think it comes down to clashing egos; are the leaders willing to admit that they have performed like ****?

Well Wheeler came out and said it started with leadership and he will be looking in the mirror to asses how he's played. We will see fairly shortly if our leaders are going to lead in a positive manor.

I agree fully with the notion that if your leaders are taking short cuts then why wouldn't everyone else. I've been worried about this for a while now as Maurice no longer has a bunch of kids who are just happy to be on the show and out to prove it for fear of being sent down.

He now has to deal with established young players that no longer fear punishment or demotion. These players are comfortable now and will look to the leaders to see what they can get away with. It's why your team leaders need to be held to the highest standard so that they set a good example. Crosby doesn't just have elite offense and works his butt off in practice. He also manages his shift length, is fairly disciplined and has some of the best defensive metrics in the league. There is only one Crosby but he should be the example that Maurice should be touting for his leaders to follow. They can easily better manage their shift length and be on the right side of the puck in their end.

listening to 1290. they are talking to Beyak. i am so f***ing sick of hearing narratives relating to "tough scheduling" and "8 games in 16 days" and "team looked bagged." Every team in the NHL faces pretty much the same scheduling challenges. it's not an excuse! get off it...or has Chevy put together a roster full of powder puffs who need "me days" every other week? jeez...

If I'm Chevy, I don't make a play for any of those rentals, unless one is somehow dirt cheap. I save my 1st for the year and the young prospects and tell Maurice that they gotta figure it out or there will be changes in the off season.

Trouba could be traded this off season anyways, Buff and Wheels aren't getting any younger. I think the window has always been smaller than people think, unless a guy like Ehlers, Connor or Laine steps up in the way of replacing a guy like Wheeler and even then we need someone to step up in replacing Buff, which Morrissey might be the guy to do it, but he's going to need to get paid eventually as well.

Here's a thought: the guy can arguably create more offense than anyone on the team for his linemates.

Maybe, just a little maybe, there would be a better fit for him than these two guys.

Like... maybe one of these guys?

Ya i'll agree with you there but i still expect more out of Frenchie than what he's shown lately , i guess you could say that about just about everyone right now .:(

Niku was surprisingly good last night. I haven't seen him play for a long time. Smart movement & decisions.

Wheeler is getting old. He's kinda moving his legs quickly but not going anywhere. Mark " i'm a bit better than anyone else " Scheifele and his 2min floating-shifts. Classic stuff.

I've always thought the window was when our young players are ready to carry the load and our vets are complimentary pieces. I still stand by that notion and tight now only Scheifele, Morrissy and Ehlers are able to carry the load. Helle is still a bit inconsistent.

20 regular season games left as a jet. Then everyone can be happy he'll be gone.

The next couple games are huge for proving the character of the team.

Do they actually respond to the coach? Are the leaders going to step up & stop floating? They were terrible defensively and structure was MIA.

Maurice needs to stop being a fan and actually coach.

The problem is that this has been going on all season. They may start winning games again but I would bet it isn't because they have suddenly turned things around. This team has not been fun to watch this year. I got my playoff email from True North and got depressed about how much money they will cost instead of excited that playoffs are around the corner. And before anyone accuses me of recency bias, I have felt this way basically all season.

That's a good point but I don't think it can work that way if the vets are getting paid 8+ mil. That would work if Scheif, Ehlers and Morrissey were the highest contracts on the team.

Man i'm still pissed at what we watched last night , one more thing , can nobody on this team carry a puck into the opposing end ? Is Ehlers the only guy that can do this ? We dump the puck and aren't getting to the puck first or causing enough turnovers , we are just doing this all night :banghead: This has to get better .

Well soon enough we will only have Wheeler making big cash as a vet. You can afford one or two plus 30 deals but you can't have a number of them. Wheelers deal is also offset by bargain deals to Scheifele and another good contract to Ehlers.

And for those of you that pined to have Buff removed from the first PP, because he was not feeding Laine enough, or he looks him off to take his own shot, or he overfeeds Wheeler, well enjoy!

The reason Buff looked Laine off, takes his own shot, or over feeds Wheeler was to get the defense to shift off Laine, which opened the seem for Wheeler to cross feed him.

With no shot from the point, no solid back and forth chemistry with the point and Wheeler we lost fluidity and we became predictable.

Buff was great at convincing the opposing teams penalty kill, as well as some posters on this board, that he could care less about feeding Laine, and that is why Laine was successful with Buff running power play.

Are the warnings from fancystats beginning to mean anything yet?
The eye test has also been telling us this team was a lot worse than the results. Slow starts, lazy back checking, cheating in the D zone, blown coverages, inconsistent goaltending, poor 5 on 5 play, inability to get out of our own zone, dependence on 1 line to score...

It is amazing the team is in the position in the standings they are.

Well if they're as bad as you think they are,it won't cost you a lot.

I agree with those who say the next few games will be important and will show the true character of the team and quality of leadership.

I’m taking the team’s reaction as a silver lining. They at least seem to understand they’re bad. I liked what I heard post game from Wheeler and Lowry.

But talk is cheap so let’s see how they follow up.

Technically, it'll be three days off because Jets literally did not show up.

If they get dummied by an equally faltering Vega team on Friday, it should be pretty clear they've been pretenders all season long.

Oh, will it be clear, bluefan? Will it?

Crazy that we've only seen you around here lately. Didn't really see you much all last season. Were you on vacation?
