Thanks for posting this - the eye test also supports the point shots.
Is that planned or are we simply not getting into position for more dangerous shots?
I don't think it's just today's game either - our point guys are getting lots of looks - maybe the opposition is giving us that lane knowing we don't have a lot of cannons back there and we are not that strong in front of the net. There have been a couple of deflections lately but we rarely see anything off the rebound.
I agree with both of you. I haven't watched the last few games due to vacation time, but I've noticed many times this year where a forward is open with good position and the pass is automatically back to the point. It's obviously what they have been coached to do, because many times it appears that they aren't looking for the best scoring opportunity, but are defaulting to the point. I have a hard time believing that players would do that, but I don't know what the explanation would be.

Easy there Morty,
I hate the Leafs.
I reference him because they were picked 1 and 2 overall with some saying Laine is better. Have Crosby and Ovechkin not been compared to each other?
I think if the Jets are going to keep Laine long term it is because he can score goals not get assists but that is just me.
I am not saying he is a bad player but he is certainly not living up to the goal scoring pace of past years.

In past years he was being called a one-trick-pony. All he could do was shoot the puck. Now he is developing into a dominant player who does everything - but he isn't quite there yet.

There is no good reason that with a forward group that includes Scheifele, Connor, Laine, Wheeler, Ehlers, and a D that includes Morrissey and Pionk, that we should have this much difficulty scoring goals.

This season is very much like last season, where we made up some points in the first half of the season where the eye test and the stats both said that we shouldn't have been winning, then in the second half we became what the eye test and the stats said that we should be.

There may be some excuses for this team (but I don't like or accept them), but there is no excuse for this talented group to not be scoring.

Over and over, I'm hearing how the Leafs (sorry) talented forwards are being encouraged to be creative by their new coach, because that's what they have up front. Our forwards are definitely not being utilized in that manner.

I was one who posted that based on losing 6 straight at home.
If you look at the standings teams with below .500 home records are out of playoff contention.
The factbis this team has been super inconsistent and it may be the right time for a coaching change.
They havev2 more at home if they lose both I would bet on that move being made.
I have been saying a coaching change is needed since mid season last year! Most of the advanced stats show this team is not nearly as good as its record (and they are currently out of a playoff spot) . It bleeds scoring chances against, is really bad 5 vs 5, and has one of the worst PK in the league.

Unless you are advocating a blockbuster trade of one of the top line forwards for defensive help there is not much the Jets can do to fix the roster given injuries and cap space and NMC. Changing the coach and thus the strategies and philosophies may make a difference. If that doesnt work then a roster shakeup is needed.

Of course the decimated D core is an excuse for Maurice. Most of the same issues existed last year as well.

I understand the Jets wanting him to concentrate on other aspects of his game, and I'm really happy with his progress this year. But at the end of a game, when we need goals, the strategy that we are using needs to change. Whether that means trying Ehlers in place of KC or sending Laine out on an offensive mission.

I don't think that the Jets would blow games just for Laine's development. It looks to me like we don't know how to adjust within a game to do what we need to win. Sure, work on playing like the coach says, but if after two periods we need goals, then we need to stack a line and tell them to get out there and score. When you're down a goal or two, it's no time to be playing not to lose.

Leafs lost 8-4 last night , they have a weak defense too but their forwards are all thinking offense . I don't think we would do any better if we went all in with offense . If we get Buff back that might change though .

One excuse i will give the Jets though is we were down to 5 defenseman for most of the game , that's got to be tough on the defenseman especially ours .

Fair enough, but if we are down by a goal or two, then playing a defensive game isn't going to win the game. I would just like to see adjustments.

But man if he buried his chances...
That's why Copp will never be a top six forward. The top six is normally reserved for offense. The most skilled players have offensive awareness, hands and an ability to provide points. Copp is great at what he does, but he is too inconsistent when it comes to burying chances. He does not have great offensive aptitude.

It's not like Nashville scored a lot of goals. We gotta get in the dirty areas in front of the net during games like this. I would be less concerned if our home stinkiness wasn't such an obvious pattern.

I've said it before, but it's almost like Maurice tries to coach creativity out of players' games. Dump and chase, North South, pucks to the point, try to get a shot through and fight for ugly goals. Just not the forte of this top six.

Yes, but that is all a different topic. You are talking coaching. The other conversation was Laine's development and comparing him to Matthews.

I would say his lack of goals comes from the way PoMo wants him to play. While our coach has him playing a more rounded game. He has killed the kids goal scoring.
he's on pace 20 5v5 goals which would be 2 behind his career high ('17-18). but he's playing better (to his typical standard) at all-around hockey. Ill take a couple less 5v5 goals with a better 200 ft effort and then add in the better play-making abilities.

the problem is he doesn't score on the PP anymore which is Maurice's fault of course :sarcasm:. honestly, not buying "killed the kid's goal scoring." He's on pace for his highest SOG count as well this season but his shooting efficiency has fallen off since his first 2 seasons.

He's leaving for sure. Jets are killing his career.
such a ridiculous comment. He's given way too much rope. Prime linemantes, prime PP time. Almost never gets benched although there's games he should be (as is the case for every player)

And no, he's not a ppg player like everyone claims he is. Yeah he'll be in the mid 70s which is great, but he's no 50 goal scorer and never will be. 30+40 is fantastic, but anyone that thinks he's going to morph into Ovi 2.0 at this point is going to be disappointed.

As much as I hate saying this: Matthews will hit 50 at least once in his career with a way more rounded game and Laine never will

I am empressed with his better defensive effort this season 5 v 5. My concern is he is not producing on the powerplay like he did in the past and he does not posses the quickness to be a two way dominate player like an Ovi,Crosby or I hate to say it Matthews.
I hope he morphs into a superstar 50 goal scorer that the Jets need but at this point he is a super talented kid that will score 30 goals per season, which is nothing to scoff at but will not lift the Jets to a cup.

Our offensive system appears to be designed for a low skill offense team. Rely on point shots with traffic in front. Problems - we don't have many d men with a great point shot, and we don't have many forwards that want to be traffic in front. Also, we neutralize our skilled forwards capabilities with the priority being to work it back to the point as per coaches instructions.

I am not sure what to do at this point but it is clear that Maurice took this team as far as he could and despite the issues it has been a good run.
Unfortunately, they are becoming tean inconsistent again as they were under Noel.
This to me means his message is not getting to them.
If they miss the playoffs he should be gone. If not the Buff situation should be clear and he will have a bettet d core to work with next season.

Again with the comparisons.
Matthews went 1OA. He is supposed to be better. There is often a big drop from #1 to #2. Laine is not Crosby, Ovi or Matthews. He is Laine. They are not him.

The league adjusted to our PP. Our PP hasn't been able to reinvent itself, although they have been better recently. We'll see if that continues.

Laine is only 21. He has lots of room to develop. I see him on a very good path. He has lots of different shots and different ways to score. The goals are going to come.

the PP is a concern. at 5v5 he's on pace to hit 20 goals, which isn't far off his career high in 17-18. Laine has had some great looks on the PP, looks that likely would have been goals the past 3 seasons. 20 and 15 PP goals the past 2 years, he's on pace for 5 this year

He’s a top 6 forward now apparently

You may be right about Matthews scoring more goals - but Laine already has a more rounded game.
