Glad that the Habs have something to cheer about, since "Cinquante Buts Pour Caufield - ce n'est pas si fou!" turned out to be tres fou after all.

Two Leafs-Habs games in Montreal coming up. Old time Saturday night matchups. If he can torch the Leafs, maybe even throw a clapper into an empty net, I think it will be safe to say that he's fully arrived.
To be fair, Caufield would probably have been able to get 50 this year if he wasn't affected by his shoulder surgery. If he can fix the mental/mechanical issue he has, I'm confident he will be a 50 goal scorer quite a few times in his career.

I'm not really worried about the forward core, especially if Dach can bounce back from his injury struggles. It's the defense that worries me the most. The core is still very much in development phase and outside of Matheson and Savard (who aren't exactly top pair quality) there aren't any vets to take off their load. Obviously we don't know how Reinbacher and Hutson will pan out at the NHL level but for next year I'm not expecting a whopping improvement in terms of team defense.

I think there's just too many decent defensive prospects in the pipeline to worry about the defenseive core too much. Some of those good prospects will bust but others will come through.

It's more about identifying which ones to keep and which ones are expendable and that can be tricky because dmen typically need more time so you really have to project into the future.

You also need to balance that youth with some veteran presence. I personally think they are leaning on their youth too much as it is on defense already.

The swing in his play is actually incredible from the start of the season to now. I've never seen this before. He's a totally different player. like going from 0 to 100. Not even talking about the stats aspect, just his play in general. The points were bound to come.

The skill and smarts were always there, but it's like he's finally gotten comfortable and just playing his natural game. The confidence has kicked in and he's been unreal.

It's incredible. Nowhere near the same player and he's only 19.

I don’t know what it was but he just couldn’t finish. Tons of chances but a shooting percentage under 7 midway through the year is insane. Maybe the surgery had something to do with it. He’s gotten back on track the last 20 or so games which is good to see.

Anyways, I agree. His history plus his metrics would lead you to believe that he should be scoring 40 plus. I think he’ll hit 50 at some point as well.

What are realistic expectations of him in the next few years? 30-40-70 kinda guy with some hits & blocks?
Maybe something like that. But there’s more upside there. He’s a pass first player but he’s got a great shot. 30 goals might be a tall order.

Honestly though, some nights he looks so dominant I think he could blow past that. It’s just too early to really have a good idea. For now I’m thinking he does 60 next year. Teams are going to start checking him harder and he’ll have to adjust.

Habs fans have been hurt so many times that they are in shock at having a high pick perform up to expectations.

I love how he fits Suzuki and Caufield perfectly, adding a lot of size to the trio and an insane ability to win puck battles. The amount of times he ends up winning battles against 2 opposing players is astonishing,

Is he the next Patches without injuries

I think they are quite different. The similarity probably lies in that they both can skate but that about it.

Aside from that, Pacioretty was a very good shooter/finisher. Slaf seems (potentially) to be more multi dimensional. Better playmaker, and stronger forchecker that constantly disrupts plays.
