I wonder if Buffalo wanted to acquire another top-60 pick before trading their first for Necas

My first thought was this makes no sense when you don’t know who is on the board, but that actually would make a ton of sense. If Carolina was prepared to take any pick in say the top 15, why not see how many picks you can pick up moving back instead of dealing your own?

Makes sense for both

After Celebrini, SJ will probably target one of the six big D who'll probably all be gone by 14th (and Jiricek or Solberg feel like a reach)

Buffalo already has everything (except on-ice success), so it doesn't matter much, they'll probably swing anyway (Eiserman?)

I think its less likely now, they probably want Helenius or MBN
If the Sabres wanted a specific player, it wouldn't make sense to trade back before the draft. They did this because they are fine with whatever options are available at 14 and want the extra draft/trade capital.

Utah is tough to figure out because they need some high-end excitement and drafted Sim high last year.
I agree, but theyre more deep at forward between: Cooley, Guenther, But, Geekie, and Doan

other than Simachev, their next prospect D would be Lamoureux whos no sure bet. The BPA at #6 will surely be a Dman and probably a franchise Dman at that whether its: Buium, Silayev, Parekh, or Dickinson.

It is possible that Buffalo is looking for a specific type (especially after drafting highly skilled offensive types). If they want a two-way demon they might have MBN and Luchanko as their top two. One or both will be there at 14.

Hmmm... don't really get it from BUF's perspective. I guess they will have a shot at a decent 2nd rounder like O'Rielly or Brunicke. Seems like there could be a really nice player at 11oa, but maybe they are good with MBN?

I mean, why not wait till the draft to see who's there?

I have no idea why you make this trade before you’re on the clock and know who you’re passing on unless this is a precursor to using the added draft capital to go grab a player. Especially since Buffalo’s prospect pool is already overflowing and hardly needs more bodies.

Hard to say whether I like this or not until I see what’s next. (If this is it, thumbs down.)
There are some nice, big, defensive RHD probably early in the 2nd round.

Great trade for SJ.

They weren't going to get one of the top-6 D at 14. This should put them in a very good spot to get one for sure. And if not, that means a really good forward will be available. The cut off for that tier seems to be somewhere around 13-15...so this guarantees them one of the higher potential players in the draft either way.

Also small possibility to continue to move up even higher using one of the other two 2nds.
Yeah, that's probably it, though Solberg would be an option at 14. No guarantee that the Big 6 will be there at 11oa, anyway.

Interesting that they make the trade preemptively. They must know that someone will be there that they want three spots ahead, hopefully :P

What is it with teams moving picks before the draft start? There was a similar deal only picks involving Chicago recently too.

Interesting at least to see people willing to move around prior to seeing how the board breaks.
I'm guessing they have a talent cutoff at 14 or later.
If you look at our boards draft discussion it looks like 14 might be less of homerun territory but still fill a need.

So moving from 14 to 11 costs 42, but swapping with a team that isn’t going to take the guy we want at 11 anyway (otherwise why would they trade down) costs 33 or 53? I don’t really think that’s the play.
