Using /60 stats when a guy hasnt even played 60 minutes is certainly a choice. Advanced stats have a place for sure, but this is exactly the time of year they mean nothing and the eye test is way better. Hes been really good the last 2 games

I always said you can't judge Hronek until he gets a legit NHL level partner. Ed has it a bit easier because he's got low level 3rd pair partners instead of AHL level partners like Hronek, but D stats rely so heavily on the partner you have to take things with a grain of salt. When a defenseman has a crappy partner, they try to cover for their partner instead of covering their man.

Case in point from the last game, Holl gets turned around by the puck carrier, Ed decides to lean in that direction instead of covering his man. End result... goal.

Whatcha doing Holl? Ya commit that much to one side, you know any competent puck handler is gonna go behind your back dummy.

Ed's got a split second to make a decision, Holl never catches up, Ed's trying to make sure the puck carrier doesn't have a shot or an easy path to the crease, leaves his man open a bit, and Lyon allows a soft goal like Husso is his mentor and role model. He had plenty of time to position himself better.

Holl screws up, Lyon let's in a softie, Ed gets -1 and HDCA. That's how stats work.

I watched this a few time to capture the right frames. I'm now convinced that Cam is the only hope for this season.

I get that using a small sample size and certain advance stats aren't the best.

I'm using the advanced stats as supporting evidence to my eye test. My eye test says he's frequently responsible for high quality chances against and he has to improve to be a legit top-4 d-man.

Am I writing his career off? No. I'm replying to a person saying that here, today, based on a 3 game sample he is great and I'm saying that no, in that 3 game sample, he hasn't been great.

I appreciate the screenshots and that is an example of not being his fault. But, I've seen plenty of examples so far that I think are his fault, and that's why he's seeing so many dangerous chances against while he's on the ice so far.

This take is the correct take. Ed has made a notable number of mistakes in the first three games this season, which is A) expected, regardless of how good he's supposed to be, B) totally fine, it's a necessary learning curve, and C) does not impact how good he will ultimately turn out. But he's still making mistakes.

The upside continues to be there for Ed, given his physical attributes and tools. The offense is still a question mark, how many points he'll put up in the future is still a question mark. He has a very high floor though.

With Mo , Ed , ASP and AJo we are set for long time on defense. Just need to get big solid stay home defansman like Ericsson to compliment those 4.

I think Seider actually gave Wings fans unreasonable expectations of young dmen.
Exactly, Seider's been on the whole another level the entire time. Carrying defense at that age in NHL is rare.

Stevie is a way ahead of you buddy, that's why a high draft pick was used on Brady Cleveland.

I like Edvinsson a lot, but these are the kinds of posts that make me realize he's frequently overUNDERrated.

Bring on the hate, you muppets!

Must have been a good evening of top shelf booze. We are longtime members and, dare I say, buddies on the net?! LOL OK that went too far, but I did correct your post for you. You are too insightful on the game for me to have people believe otherwise.

Simon also sent a more visual message for you.

Seriously, these are highlights of a rookie. KaChuck and Malkin found the ice and, well that skating, that sticking handling, that defense. just keep an open mind to eating crow in April, which I know you will happily do. This kid is special. Plus with Celebrini out, just look at rookie stats.

I think he may average 20 a game by season's end.

Liking the kids potential future? Cool. Great.

Acting like he's already arrived 3 games into the season? You lost me.

I'm going to keep pointing to how his play leads to Grade-A scoring chances for the other team WAY too often

3 games? I am using his body of work in the NHL (he isn't classified as a rookie) and his progress in the AHL.

He is avwraging over 19 minutes a game already. That average may be 20 by year's end.

MISTAKES - Every d;man makes them. Young D make more of them. I said he would be the winner of the Calder, not the best d in the League. Others have pointed out the garbage partners. I have said I preferred he be paired with Mo and Chiarot anchor the 2nd pairing. That may not work because they both handle the puck a lot and this does provide a solid D man on the ice for 80% of the game.

Jaster asked for hate. At year's end, I'll hand out I told you so cards.

We're buddies on the net insofar as you're going to invite me to that Puerto Rican getaway one day! Lol!

I love that first clip, too funny.

My expectations of Edvinsson, once he's at least a near-finished product, can best be described as "a dominant force." I dominant defender with a premier transition game who can chip in some offense. He's special, I agree. I can't go so far as to say he's an anchor top-4 on every team in the NHL today, nor do I think he'll be better than Mo. In fact, maybe it's not so much that Edvinsson is overrated by some, but that Mo is underrated.

I'll eat crow in April if he's better than Mo at that point, or if he's putting up massive points. Anything short of that is within my expectations for him. And I think we mostly agree here. People saying he's going to be better than Mo give me "Berggren's floor is Gus Nyquist" vibes though

See you at the pool :naughty:

I guess I just don't think UNREAL good players make a lot of mistakes. I don't think key pieces of teams with Stanley Cup aspirations make a lot of mistakes.

I think rookies with a lot of potential and needed growth make a lot of mistakes

Well, I believe Mo is over rated. Bring the hate!

PS: Costa Rica. That damn getaway is still under construction. I'll DM you a few photos. The amount of concrete being poured is unreal compared to US standards. It is like a concrete vault with windows.
