He was when he wanted to play defense. Dude I watched those games live, not the highlight reel. I never stated Lemieux enjoyed playing defense, I just said he could do it if the situation merited it.

Or even Jordan IMO, James is a lot recency bias and hype, once the dust settles he's quite far behind Jordan. Jordan has 6 NBA championships as the no.1 option with 6 Finals MVPs, 10 scoring titles, the highest scoring average in league history.

LeBron has 3 titles with 3 Finals MVPs and 1 scoring title. Yes he rebounds and gets assists, but that doesn't make up for the glaring disparity there.

i think its something with today's fan that needs assurance that the best player now is the "GOAT"
you hear it with james (and kobe before that), you hear it with brady (:shakehead) etc.
if you watched MJ play, i think there's little doubt who is the GOAT in BB.

In my opinion, at least hockey fans have it right. as a big crosby and pens fan, i don't think he's even close to 66 & 99. say what you want about today's players being better then those who played in the past. but I give give mario and wayne an extra edge for that in being that much better then their peers

Lemieux who is usually rated #3 or 4 all time is a better hockey player than jordan was a basketball player. Jordan actually isn't that dominant. Many players have better stats. James is one of them and more rings.

I dislike Howe for reasons I cant really explain so I put him above Howe.

I also think hes a much more complete player then Mario ever was so at worst hes equal to Mario, maybe better already.

Hes ascended from generational to multi generational and one of the best players ever.

Jordan won six NBA championships and six NBA Finals MVP awards. James has three rings and three NBA Finals MVP awards. How in the hell does James have more rings?

Better stats? Jordan has higher per game averages in the regular season and in the playoffs. Not to mention Jordan was one of the best defensive guards of his era, winning the Defensive Player of the Year Award in 87-88. No wonder you think Crosby is a top-five player of all-time.

Wait what? Were you alive in the 90s?

Jordan's will to win was significantly stronger than Lemieux'.And winning he did.A lot.

Mario is more like Magic Johnson.

I agree but Tom Brady is absolutely the GOAT of QBs. This is not even debatable anymore. 5 rings, 4 SB MVPs, 2 MVPs, numerous NFL records, one of the highest passer ratings ever, and is top 3 or 4 in every major passing stat. The people above him are guys like Manning, Favre, and Brees who have a bunch more passing attempts.

This is accurate. Lemieux could play defense if he had to; he just didn't, especially during the regular season.
 
Still don't see enough Bobby Hull. Crosby is 3rd best player in his franchise history.
I am a Hawks fan, but god people. Do some research.
I also have been alive for the following:
Gretzky(but not prime)
Lemieux
Jagr
Messier

and can say definitively that all were better than Crosby. I am going by eye test based on watching the game as a kid though, maybe that biases me. I grew up watching those guys dominate the league. Doing research, Hull is siginificantly better than Crosby. Howe is more longevity than anything else. Remember this though: For most of Howe and Hull's career(the older of both for clarity) there were only 6 teams in the NHL. Competition was harder, relative to their peers, And there were less games to amass goals and assists. In a 6 team NHL only the best of the best of their day played there. So think about the QOC there.

Think about the greater talent pool now. 31 teams, but players from all over the world. Something the O6 guys never had to deal with. Having a US player back then was considered rare. This period now is truly best of the best in that regard. As evidence, I cite the '79 Challenge Cup where the NHL players were beaten 2 out of 3 times. I will also cite the '72 Summit Series & more so, the '87 Canada Cup, where it took both Lemieux AND Gretzky to beat the Soviets. Now, we have talent from all over the world in the NHL, so the O6 era has nothing on talent availability.

Crosby's career has been marred by injuries but, when he's healthy, he's as good as anyone to play this game outside of Gretzky, Lemieux, Howe and Orr. Jagr had a great string of healthy seasons where he racked up the points and hardware but I'd take a healthy Sid on my team over him any day.
 
I know he's reached a mythical folklore status among pretty much all hockey circles. And I'll surely catch flak for this...

He was more tough, sure. More tough than anyone to play the game. His longevity may never be equaled. His grittiness may never be matched. Legendary in every sense of the word.

But the truth is this...Gordie Howe was not as good of a player as Crosby is. Sorry.

You may want to actually look at how offensively dominant Gordie Howe was. It's scary.
 
Crosby versus Howe

One guy played in a league where even the 4th liners were millionaire professional athletes with personal staff, and the other player in a league where even the great players worked in the quarry over the summer.

oh please, there's a flag on a defensive guy if he breaths on him nowadays. he makes 15-20 yard passes all day long to small receivers run free will because they'renot allowed to be hit anymore
