give him 12m x 7 years just so mtl matches and gets screwed

I can see the headlines now: burke fired, nonis fired. Leafs are a joke.

Subban is a good player but not worth the picks we give up. Theres similar talent in this draft going into the late 1st.

We already have finn..that engimatic D

Stamkos and Benn are the types of players you offersheet - Subban, hell no.

Stamkos is, Benn isn't...

Subban? I'd do it just to mess with Montreal's cap situation. You know they will have to match to not look like they were bullied by the Leafs, and they will be in a worse situation for doing so, which in turn is good for us as division rivals.

Would be too costly in draft picks, but WHY THE HELL NOT?

I mean honestly, what are the chances Montreal doesn't match? Slim to none. The draft pick compensation is likely more than I'd be willing to pay but not nearly enough for Montreal to give him up.

At worst it would really piss off Montreal and their fans, so really, there's nothing to lose.

You don't take that risk. What if they say "screw it they can have him while we get MacKinnon/Jones/Drouin. These boards will explode with anger. Not happening.

Again..they don't have to match at all. We're probably heading to the lottery again this year anyway so why on God's green earth would you give Montreal another elite centerman. Galchenyuk and MacKinnon would haunt us for the next decade while we have to deal with Subban's antics.

On the price & compensation

If you offer sheet Subban to the term and money he's reportedly asking for, the compensation is a 1st + 3rd.

The question becomes - can you draft a player better than Subban with a 1st and a 3rd? I'm not so sure you can, particularly with the Leafs' history of drafting and developing young players.

On sending him an offer sheet

What's the point?

Surely you only offer sheet a player if you feel there is a chance you can nab him?

PK still has the right to refuse the offer sheet, which is something people forget. Just because you throw in an offer sheet, doesn't mean you are guaranteed the player.

Additionally - if PK is offer sheeted by the Leafs, the Habs have to match. You don't lose your star player and face of the franchise, to your rivals. Nashville matched on Weber, and I'm sure MTL would match Subban.

So question becomes - why offer sheet Subban if there's no chance of it leading to a successful outcome? Seems kind of pointless to me. If anything it only fractures a relationship between 2 newly employed GMs.

No GM is stupid enough to offersheet a team when you have Scrivens/Reimer as your goalies.

Offer sheets make sense for good teams who's picks are less valuable. They can be a disaster for poor teams. What are the Leafs right now?

lmao I hate when people talk about offer sheets.

They NEVER happen for big names, it's just dumb business. Why ruin your chances for a future trade? Why give away picks when you're franchise could come bottom 5!

who's the biggest name to even accept and have it not matched,Penner? 6 years ago?

Do we know if they didn't give him one and he refused to sign it?

Beyond reasonable doubt Burke did not send ANY offer sheets out there also this is Toronto they can't go to a random game without being noticed I am sure we would of heard of an offer sheet.

For hilarity's sake, yes. We're not going to be caught dealing with the Habs anytime soon so lets send a tremor through the NE division and offer-sheet Subban. We have the cap-space to do it

As a habs fan, I'd wonder why you'd do this. Phaneuf, Gardiner, Franson, Rielly, Gunnarsson, etc.. make up a pretty decently made up core for the future. Why go for Subban? Leafs are better off using the picks for a young center more so than a young D. Just my take.
