Speculation: Should the Canes explore the Goalie Market

Andersen out 8-12 weeks, doesn't give much time to see if he's ready for the playoffs or what. But I think they wanted to accumulate cap for the TDL for other ways to improve.

Gibson at 50% ? Not sure who would move the needle.
It’s a difficult spot as 8-12 weeks means Andersen can easily be back for the end of the regular season. If it were a full season injury it’s an easier decision.

I think Carolina pushes through with Kochetkov/Martin and watches the waiver wire.

Might I interest you in a lightly-used Tristan Jarry? Straight up for Freddie Andersen.

While that may seem like a joke at face value, I do actually believe that if Tristan Jarry was put in net with a team in front of him that actually had a defensive zone system that all players bought into, that he would be capable of more than what he is showing in Pittsburgh.

No, but Alex Nedeljkovic is another matter entirely.

As a backup to Kochetkov, I could see it. Mrazek’s one of those guys who will give you about 30 good games a year, then turn into a pumpkin. Of the guys who are realistically available he might make the best platoon option.

I'm surprised to see his stats over the last two years given Chicago isn't exactly a notable defensive team. I wonder if that would be the way to go.

What's the scouting report on Kochetkov? He's 25 and his numbers aren't abysmal or anything. He's 10-2-0? 2.30 GAA. 48-22-9 in his career thus far. If that's not good enough... what else should a team really need? :dunno:

It’s a hard yes. They can’t have Kochetkov-Martin going into the playoffs, and Andersen is cooked at this point.

I know he's been hurt more often than healthy for a couple years now. But Andersen's been fantastic when he does play. Are you saying "cooked" because you don't think he'll be any good when he gets back, or just that you don't trust that he'll ever be healthy enough now to matter?

I doubt he’ll ever play regularly again.

You’re right that he’s been a lot better than he gets credit for, when he’s been available. But he’s fully into perpetually-injured mode at this point, and I can only assume his body isn’t going to stop breaking down.

Finding goaltending during the season is next to impossible. Anyone who has a hot goalie likely won’t trade them. Last time I personally remember a in season goalie trade working out was 2006 with Roloson, and that wasn’t even technically supposed to work out as well as it did

Maybe Andersen is broken, maybe he can come back for the playoffs, whichever... but does a team really need a 1.48GAA/.941SvPCT? Even if those are slightly exaggerated small sample stats, I'm thinking Kochetkov's numbers are all any contending team really needs? Unless there is an eye-test or other metric which says Kochetkov can't keep that up? :dunno:

It'd be nice to have a 3rd option, ok, but isn't that just getting a little greedy? Kochetkov sure seems from the outside stats watcher to be getting the job done?

It's more of insurance policy vs keeping Spencer Martin as the back up

Thanks for the rundown. If this is the case, and I'll take the word of Canes fans for it, then a trade for a goalie is almost a given.

Carolina's roster is too good to just pray with Kochetkov. You can't take the risk that they just waste the year.

I've wanted to see what Gibson could do on a better team. If Anaheim takes 50% (which they likely won't) I'd listen.

I swear, as a neutral fan, this would make me jump on the Carolina bandwagon so hard. I'd buy a Gibson jersey, I really would.

I've always had a soft spot for the Canes, and I'm a big fan of Gibson. For a team that does nothing but prove critics wrong, adding an Gibson for a Cup run would be just so on-brand.

Make it happen, real life!
