Speculation: Should the Canes explore the Goalie Market

i know it won't happen, but i'd love to get mrazek back. all he's doing for chicago is hurting their draft position, i tell myself. they should be glad to let him go.

Good pro scouting is Roslovic and Robinson. We had a "healthy" Anderson and Pyotr, Neither Stolarz or Thompson would want to play 3rd/Ahl'r. Sucks to be where we're at with both going down, but a knock at our pro scouting aint it.

Matt Murray for a conditional 6th based on playing 10 + games. Otherwise future considerations. Low risk for both sides and could actually help the canes if Murray pans out at all.

Not a bad suggestion. Murray will cost nothing, looks fine enough in the AHL (and pre-season), and can easily disappear if things don't work out.

And be honest, Canes fans. It worked out pretty well for you guys the last time Toronto let you use one of our goalies that everyone thought had no business being in the NHL.
 
Chicago & Mrazek makes sense given their situation with Soderblom and Broissot (Arvid is getting very close to games played max making him eligible for waivers if demoted).

However, they do NOT know when Broissot will return. Carolina likely has to wait for that issue to be resolved.

Otherwise, Chicago can absorb Andersons contract. The issue is: is Carolina OK with TWO years of Mrazek?

IF Chicago takes Andersson’s contract, you’re likely looking at a 2026 1st + mid level prospect return from Carolina.

Carolina should -- Andersen especially clearly cannot be trusted to stay healthy -- but this feels very much like the kind of thing Dundon and Tulsky will think they're smarter than everyone else on and play Spencer Martin for like 20 games in a row.

I'd second the Matt Murray offering, a conditional 26 7th

If he plays 10GP, you give us the pick.

We're good in the AHL currently with our young tandem, he's been good in the AHL too but this is probably the best chance for him to play meaningful hockey again.

Reading some more on Blackwood, I'm not sure he'd be a good fit in Carolina.

Is it fair to say he has consistency issues? Will play really well for a couple games where you would think he's legit starter material, but then play really poorly?

Secondly, like most goalies, he seems to do his best when seeing a lot of rubber. Makes sense as it keeps a goalie in the game and focused. The Canes are a team that does not allow a lot of shots, 2nd least in the NHL (best CA/60 in the NHL) so goalies don't see a lot of rubber consistently.

Thirdly, his HDSV%. The way Carolina plays is that they don't give up a lot of shots, but when their system breaks down, they give up HD chances. So while their 5v5 CA/60 is best in the NHL, their HDCA/60 is ranked 17th in then NHL. Goalies have to go from ice cold to stopping a break-away.

Admittedly, this is a tough situation for any goalie. Go through stretches without any action then suddenly having to face a high danger scoring chance. Over last season and this one to date, Andersen has the best 5v5 HDSV% in the NHL and Kochetkov has the 4th best. Raanta and Martin's HDSV% has been very poor over this stretch playing behind the same skaters.

I suspect the Canes, who are heavy into analytics, look for goalie candidates who might excel in this environment and would focus on those goalies, whoever they may be.

1st is too high. There’s something here to make a deal but not at that valuation
 
Vladar has had a decent year. I don't think the Flames would ask for more than a 3rd or 4th for him.

I feel as though his consistency issues are largely overstated, as Sharks fans have been very happy with his performance over the last season and a quarter, relative to overall team play. I do, however, tend to agree with your two latter points. The Sharks have given up close to 50% more shots, which tends to keep goalies more engaged. Approximately one in ten shots given up up by the Sharks is a HDS, compared to Carolina coming in at about one in eight. It's hard to say how this change might actually manifest with Blackwood without seeing it actually unfold, but I understand why this would give you pause. There very well may be better fits for the Canes, and Blackwood, but trying to better understand perceived value is helpful regardless of our opinions.
