While the author mentions Carter, the reality is that we lost our leading scorer from the previous year and it's a steep hurdle for any NHL team to recover from. I'm glad we're still in the mix.
Carter's injury is not the reason the team is once again climbing uphill. The loss of the threat of Carter was something they had to adjust to, but they have more than enough talent to put goals in the net, and win games. And he's been on this team the last 3 years when they failed. Too many fans are using that the reason the team is struggling. It's not. Leadership, or lack thereof, has plagued them for 3 years now. That's a glaring issue. THey also do not have the depth to compete with the skill set of the competition on most nights
I didn't' see them as a playoff team in Sept and nothing I've seen has changed that.
Luc and Blake have made good progress, given what they inherited. They had a strong draft, and have added some young blood, that's a positive first step. Iafallo, esp, has been fun to watch. Kempe and Co are growing with every game, it takes at least 2 years, closer to 3 for most young players to have a regular path, confidence and stabilize their game.
More young blood will be up next year.
It is going to take more than one year to undo DL's boggle.
And that path shouldn't include trading draft picks and prospect for that 'veteran' guy...no more rentals...
I think they will make moves in June and over the summer that will move some bodies out and hopefully get draft picks, prospects or a young player.
THey are well aware they have an aging core and some tough decisions to make .
