It's pretty crazy to say that the team was bad defensively while in the same breath try to deflect blame from the defensive defensemen.

Bahl and Siegenthaler literally only have one job, if they're not playing good defense then they aren't bringing any value to the roster. If you want to know why the defense sucked last year, that's a great place to start.
So you want to blame the 4 and 5 Dmen in ES ATOI for the defensive woes?

The #4 who had a concussion and a broken foot and the #5 who has never played a full season of NHL hockey before this one.

That's insane. Luke leading the entire team in time on ice was easily the biggest problem on Defense.

Nemec playing 20 minutes a night as a 19 year old is a close 2nd

I don’t watch much of his stuff but this was actually a really informative video about Keefe and how he thinks he will fit with this roster. Worth a watch.

This honestly has got me excited this is going to work out well.

Especially if Fitz has a good offseason in plugging up the major holes

When your partner was Dougie Hamilton and now it's rookie Nemec it is not a BS excuse. His xGF% with Nemec was 44.69 (390 minutes) and with Hamilton was 57.08 (252 minutes). Those were the only two partners he played more the 150 minutes with at even strength.

You should compare Siegenthaler’s numbers from Oct 12 - Jan 6 and Feb 20 - Apr 15.

He played better with Nemec before he was out with an injury and his numbers tanked into oblivion when he came back.

But yeah, you’re obviously right, the numbers with Dougie were better, though the team shot like shit with them so we didn’t benefit that much.

I guess it depends on how you define biggest problem because 5v5 Smith and Marino got lit up way more than Luke and notably lower GF%.

And Luke led the team in ice time because he played 82 games while everyone didn’t.

Luke was 4th in TOI/GP 5v5 though.

And yes, Luke had to be relied on more than anyone would have preferred. Oh well, them’s the brakes.

I don't underestimate Keefe...I honestly have no idea what to expect from him.

And I definitely do think our young defenders could be good enough to make the playoffs.

On Harley, 22 is a lot different than 20 in Luke or 19 in Nemec.

Harley came into this season with 131 AHL games and 40 NHL games...and he was lucky enough to be paired with Heiskanen the vast majority of the season.

Luke came into this season with 2 NHL games. Nemec came into this season with 65 AHL games...that is substantially different.

I don't think all experience is good experience.... getting your head kicked in for 82 games is not good experience.

Yeah, I actually think Luke and Nemec will be fine and this wasn’t bad for them in any way.

We’ve seen young Devils defensemen have tougher seasons.

I wanted Berube, but I'm willing to have some faith in Keefe. I'm glad the Devils went outside the organization, as the team needed a departure from the status quo. If Keefe brings some structure, especially defensively, it can only help. And he was popular with the stars in Toronto, which gives hope that he'll get the most out of Hughes/Hughes/Hischier/Hamilton/Bratt/Meier.

Gotta say THAT threw me for a loop, Steve. lol

I can't wait to hear the "FIRE SHELDON" chants during our opening night game after we are trailing 1 to 0 after 10 minutes of play....

In all honesty the only other coach I was really interested aside from Keefe was Woodcroft. I wouldn't of been mad if we brought in Berube and I'm glad we avoided McLellan. The more you look into it the more it made sense to go after Keefe. Someone had to take the fall in Toronto when it's clear that team is not built properly to be a Cup contender.

I’m not going to read half this thread. Just know Keefe is one of the more creative coaches that employs multiple systems in every zone depending on certain reads. I’m sure his train wreck of a defense during his entire tenure severely limited his abilities to maximize his team’s production offensively and defensively…which is a scary prospect given the potential of NJs defense.

I love people that talk about adjustments schematically as if you can teach/tweak systems in the middle of the playoffs. Changes aren’t always a good thing, especially if the process is working, sometimes puck luck ain’t on your side.

This is responding to nothing, but Bahl didn't suck - he was tasked with very difficult minutes and struggled in those minutes. The beneficiary of said hard minutes was Luke Hughes. That said, if Keefe and the Devils can fix their breakouts, Luke will look exceptional - his biggest issue was zone exits, which seems like it is easily fixable, whereas if Luke were struggling with 1 on 1 defense, that's much harder to improve at this level.
