I don't get it. How much better is Byram than Rasmus Andersson? I get that hes 4.5 years younger, but is he really much better? Wouldnt it be better to just chase Andersson in UFA, sign him to a similar 7 x 9 deal (Byram will likely be more like 8x 11 or 12+), and save the #4 pick?

I don't mean to debate the merits of Andersson specifically, just the incredible price of a guys signed for one year. It would be like Washington paying a #4 for Tuch a year ago.

You can target good players who fit the need in UFA without paying through the draft pick nose.

BTW, the bigger the cap, the more valuable ELCs will be. When the cap is 120M, a so so player will be paid 10M, but an ELC will go from 800k to $1m. In other words, the cap savings from ELCs will be increasingly important as the top end players get more and more 8 figure AAV deals. As such, I think drafting will be more and more important.

9+27 is fair at peak value, but that wasn't what the initial trade would be. Eklund for Byram 1 for 1 is a terrible trade and this would've obviously been much more than that

Can't fully laugh at Chicago yet until after RD1. If they reach on Reid at 2 its just as bad as Levshunov, and MGs comments after the deal seems that Stenberg wasn't thought about at all. MG traded Eklund mostly cause he wanted Byram.
should be clear now that eklund is valued less than a Byram tho?

9th and 27th is pretty fair for Byram imo. That's like the very edge far of the top tier in this draft while 4th is right in the sweet spot plus they added their own RD who was arguably one of their top 5v5 defender last year. There is prob about 3-4 top pair Ds in the draft per experts and they're likely gone by 9th leaving Rudolph who is riskier or Gustaf who has lower upside.

i do love that Sharks moves are really screwing with the Hawks rebuild to overpay lol.
I get the feeling hawks management feels pressure to make kneejerk reactions when they see the sharks rebuild going better and faster

should be clear now that eklund is valued less than a Byram tho?
Sure, especially since he was drafted higher so I don't think that was ever a debate. The value in question however is just made up anyways, and people get too caught up on it vs. the quality of what's being traded

Toronto seems pretty set on Mckenna, so no point in thinking about the possibility of him falling to the Sharks at 9

but If GMMG isn't all over the phones trying to trade up to the #2 pick to get his pick of Stenberg or Reid, he should be fired

I know I'm late to this thread but I hate this trade. Eklund's stats were sandbagged by slowfolli last season and his advanced stats were great. If we actually played him with Misa/Cherny or other talented forwards he would shine. Haltunnen's inclusion makes this a big overpayment too IMO.

After sticking with this team through some terrible years, and then signing a team-friendly extension, this move just leaves a bad taste. If I'm a player I don't see why I'd trust Mike Grier at this point...

Anyway, glad I didn't get that Eklund jersey for my wife yet.

Obviously this probably means we're taking Stenberg at 2, but I'd love to see them trade the 9th/27th to move up and see if we could draft 2d in the top 5 (Reid/Carels?)

Anybody who doesn’t realize the “After McKenna it is a similar tier of players so it makes sense to go for positional need” was complete bs after yesterday is coping.

The Hawks were desperately trying to trade up to 2 yesterday for Stenberg, and when that didn’t work they didn’t really care about keeping their pick any more.

I don’t think that write-up says what you think it says. It says “Chicago wanted to use #4 to get something that would help next season” and Buffalo is thinking along the same lines. Since Stenberg is largely viewed as ready for NHL action using #4 to acquire Stenberg via a trade up still fits within that framing. Once Chicago thought Stenberg was not attainable they pivoted to using #4 to get a D that would make an immediate impact.

None of what was in the write-up supports that the defenders aren’t on a similar tier as Stenberg, just that they aren’t expected to make an immediate impact.

"The Byram trade is good, actually, because a different team with a much more promising present roster was willing to trade a much less valuable asset than the insane overpayment we sent out" is the funniest Hawks cope take yet

Keep em coming, I love em
