It depends on how much you believe in the young talent like an Eklund to help make your team competitive. Him and Wright could certainly be major catalysts to build around and you'd best plan to do that on their ELC's to really maximize your resources.

I love Eklund. But he isn't enough overcome our deficiencies. A defense core with 3 bottom pairing players and and 3 players better suited for a 2nd pairing role. 4 of them are overpaid. 2 of them massively.

Balcers and Labanc probably shouldn't be in the top six. We don't have a ton of depth scoring. That cap is Yeesh.

On Wright, will we get him? We sure as hell won't finish in the bottom 2 or 3 teams. We aren't bad enough for that.

Can we have 3 buyouts on the books at once? I thought we could only have 2.

Any NHL team can retain salary on up to three contracts at any given time. On any given contract only two teams may retain salary. As covered by others, any team can buyout as many players as they desire.

I really hope you are wrong. Best case scenario is we wave him once his suspension is done and he gets claimed. Small chance of that though.
I very well could be. Until we hear from DW none of us really know. I just view it as it's not a family or even corporate America, it's pro sports. The Sharks have stated they intend to make the playoffs so how best do they do that? With or without a power forward like Kane. I don't know how much DW weighs Kane's on ice contributions compared to his off ice negatives? Pro sports has a long history of taking back players if they can help the team win almost no matter their past transgressions. To be frank, Kane's missteps aren't even a pimple on the ass check of some of the things players in other pro league have come back from. I guess we'll see in a month what happens.

We will see. For Kane it isn't really any one thing but rather the cumulation of everything that hurts him. You are quite right though about Pro Sports. That's is something that needs to change.

Eklund's the only real reason to watch this team right now.
You are absolutely correct. If they send him back to the minor, I'd stop watching the sharks altogether because I see NO FUTURE for this team. I know he is learning on the job, but without Eklund, the sharks are unwatchable. So I hope Doug and the coaching staff will resist the temptation to send him back. Move him to the 4th line or send him to the press box anything but send him back. I know there are many other sharks fans who will stop watching the Sharks altogether if they send Eklind back.

In addition to his off ice problems, Kane has problems with his teammates too. Yes, many athletes with off ice problems are given another chance if they can help the team win. I’m not sure putting Kane back on the team is helpful. The last 2 years this team played uninspired hockey and several of the players looked like they didn’t want to be there. It’s clear that problems in the locker room contributed to their poor play. Does putting Kane back on the team create these locker room problems again? Given the comments from the players this year, I suspect it does. I’d rather have a less talented and cohesive team than a little more talent and a splintered team.

I agree. I think most of the skaters don't have the defensive skill to make up for their lack of offense or the offensive skill to make up for their lack of defense. So, the coaching is always trying to balance the two or just trying to solve the problem with superior effort or statistics.

This is not to say they can't be competitive, just that IMO the so-so depth will limit their matchup options in crunch time.
In the near-term, it'd be great to see Weatherby, Balcers, maybe Dahlen develop their defensive skills. Or two Bonino clones, so lines 2, 3, 4 have a decent anchor. :sarcasm:
Over the horizon, I think Bordeleau and Robins should bring a good 2-way game. But, I'm not sure the other forward prospects are quite there yet.

I just keep posting gifs of him instead of arguing.

I think the last game in particular he consistently did something really impressive almost every shift. The other games it felt like he couldn’t get/keep the puck enough. He’s still do something impressive at least once a game but this last one really felt like I saw the full breadth of what he’s capable of.

Yeah I don't agree with that. What some of you keep referring to as uninspired I viewed as a lack of talent (healthy or otherwise) and a lack of competent goaltending. Season before last 3 of the best player spent a significant time injured and out of the lineup while the rest of the roster lacked scoring depth and NHL talent. Last season was similar but the team did in fact battle despite those deficiencies to be 4 points from a playoff spot until just before the TDL at the end of the season. Shitty goaltending was still the single greatest weakness of this team in the 2 previous seasons (actually 3). So I just don't buy the attempted scapegoating that it was somehow Kanes fault that the team sucked the last 2 seasons. That's frankly just wrong. I guarantee these players have had teammates they didn't like the whole time they've been playing. No different than any other walk of life, there are assholes everywhere and you sometimes have to put up with them in your job.

Yeah this was the first game since preseason where I thought he looked like he was offering enough to actually stay. He can't forecheck and he can't separate guys from the puck defensively with any physical play so he's going to have to be a pick pocket and provide value with his amazing vision and agility.

Maybe. Personally, I believe that most these guys deserve punishment but they should have a path back to redemption in most cases. The NHL decided Kane's fate. No reason he shouldn't get to play again at this point. Dude is losing out on almost 2mil. That's no small punishment especially for someone in his situation.

Yup everyone is interpreting all of our problems as Kane. Charitably, those views are misguided.

The last few games have proven that, the team just wasn't very good and still isn't.

There was another pass he made against the boards at the top of the screen under pressure when attacking to the left just inside the o zone where he feathered a saucer pass to the center of the ice for a guy who hadn't even skated into frame yet. Other skater picked it up in stride and went in for a shot. The vision and touch on that one blew me away.

I may be mistaken but I think that was Dahlen.
