I feel that with the right development, Eklund really has it in him to be a franchise caliber forward for us. His creativity and IQ are on another level. Like we haven't had that caliber of playmaking from a forward since Thornton (only because we literally haven't had another high end playmaker in a long time)
Both those plays were totally ridiculous, and should give him so much confidence. I don't think he should go back to Sweden, but I do think they need to help build up his confidence. He's generally making the right plays defensively and his skill level is so high I think it would be a bit wasteful to get him off of North American ice and playing against weaker competition. In some ways I don't think he realizes how good he is yet.

I find hes been very scared the past few games. Not taking any risks which means no O zone play

Eklund: "You think i can't play in the nhl right now? Okay, fine."
Narrator: "It was not."
Eklund: "That's when it became personal for me."

A little off-topic but my goodness Sheng Peng has been a blessing for this franchise.

This was the exact play I was thinking of and he does all the work of finding it, cutting it, breaking it down, and bringing up another play I hadn't even thought about!
Well at least let him know you appreciate it @Sheng Peng because we all do

You know I was looking at the "Members" tab on the HfBoards main page, which details the members who have accumulated the most posts, likes, articles, points, vbet cash, etc. and one of the members with the most media posted is actually our very own Nem, and I guess there is a correlation between the amount of media Nem produces and posts and why we love him so much.

And I think it's the same case with Sheng Peng here. I mean, those two gifs that he made himself are so awesome and Sheng is awesome. And I would "at" Kevin Kurz here but I don't think Kevin has ever made a gif for us to enjoy (I don't believe he has any multimedia talent so I maybe I won't ask him to maybe he doesn't like gifs or memes I dunno).

It's tough for me to send Eklund down, partly because of plays like Sheng highlighted and partly because I think the team is genuinely excited to have him and I think it's helped the locker room be a more fun place. Play for the rookies! This is a new team! etc. etc.

But, I do think he's looked scared the last few games, like he's lost his confidence a bit. I actually thought his first period in this game was good, I saw him do things a lot more, and then he sorta disappeared again. I'm not sure what the answer is and ultimately it depends on the kind of person he is. He might be the type of player (which I suspect) that needs to play through this, learn, and get better and sending him down to weaker competition may not help as much as letting him figure this out. Or maybe he should go to the AHL and dominate for a bit so he can come back up and feel like the bad ass that he is. Not sure.

But my question is... who do you replace him with? John Leonard? Chlemevski? Unless DW swings a trade for a Kessel or decides to let Kane back in the room, Eklund's the best option we have.

I think the best option is assigning him to the AHL now but the team getting off to this sort of start even with the last two games is probably going to convince them to keep him here and go for it. I'd assign him to the AHL now and keep him there then use the remaining four games at the end of the season if he's earned it.

Probably the coach telling him to play a less risky game.

Good way to stifle a creative player's development.
It just looks like he's jittery after so many guys taking runs at him in the first few games. I don't think Boughner is stifling his creativity. Eklund has shown good defensive commitment.

Plus, I think he's already had a few close calls near the boards. Development-wise, some bulk and experience-what-not-to-do should help in that regard.

Although sending him to Sweden would prevent him from playing on NA ice. It would give him a year to grow and bulk up more, and be a leader for Djurgarden. I have no faith in the Cuda, and the SHL (assuming he went before the 10th game) wouldn't burn an ELC year.

Fwiw his SHL team is down bad, bad. 2nd to last, injuries, mutual termination with the HC, GM seems pretty ass

I don't want to send him into the situation mentioned by Illicitus. I'd rather he stay close to the Sharks, and really the best place for him is the NHL. In the AHL guys are always trying to prove themselves and as many have said it's a rougher league with more fights etc. Don't want people taking runs at him there.

Getting used to the timing of smaller ice is more important to me than bulking up more but also playing in the AHL doesn't prevent him from bulking up more either. Since he won't burn an elc year in the AHL, I'd prefer he do all that here because the big club would have more ability to help him on that front than going back to Sweden.

agreed, i see no benefit of sending him overseas. Let him play on the NA ice, get used to NA and be brought up by the org when ready

I mean there has been some decent evidence that players develop better in the NHL than the AHL, and given that league's reputation for goons - I feel like it would only stunt his development by putting him there.

I don't think SHL offers anything other than time.

Ideally, he stays with the NHL and Boughner doesn't decide a single turnover should result in him being dropped to the 4th line.

They need to send him down. With all the terrible contracts we have and how important cap space is, it'd be stupid to burn a year of his ELC in a non-contending year.
