They need to send him down. With all the terrible contracts we have and how important cap space is, it'd be stupid to burn a year of his ELC in a non-contending year.
I don't know if sending him to the SHL is much of a demotion. Thats a pretty strong league to my understanding. I agree it may be in his best interest to get some experience out there and dominate that league for another year. Hes got a pretty good taste of the NHL.

The whole point of having these contracts is to take advantage of them as much as possible. So even if he's an NHL caliber player, which he is, if the team isn't competitive and he still can grow while being assigned elsewhere, they should probably plan for the future as best as possible.

I don't want to send him into the situation mentioned by Illicitus. I'd rather he stay close to the Sharks, and really the best place for him is the NHL. In the AHL guys are always trying to prove themselves and as many have said it's a rougher league with more fights etc. Don't want people taking runs at him there.

One worry about keeping him close to the Sharks is if it starts to stifle his strengths. This is anecdotal, but last night he started shooting at shins on the PP :sarcasm: and got dinged up blocking a puck with his body. For a player who's the most legit playmaker the org has drafted in some time, I'd think it's better to give him room to be creative on the PP and let him use his great edges and stick to defend against pucks. Otherwise, his development might be more of hammering a square peg into a round hole.

No matter what happens they’re not winning a cup during his ELC, whether it slides a year or not.

The combination of Kane’s off ice issues, Vlasic’s decline and Karlsson’s contract all seem insurmountable. I think we are stuck where we are for the immediate future.

I don't buy that. Even if you buy them out as the worst case scenario this offseason, they have the resources to put together a better team. If they're not willing to cut their losses with these players then I can respect that belief but they can eat the dead weight of Jones, Kane, and Vlasic's buyouts and still ice a much better and more competitive club with the resources available. Especially if they were lucky enough to suck so bad that they ended up with Wright.

Can we have 3 buyouts on the books at once? I thought we could only have 2.

Agreed. I wouldn't count on them buying out Kane at this point though. Maybe I'm naive but I'm not convinced he's played his last game in teal.

I really hope you are wrong. Best case scenario is we wave him once his suspension is done and he gets claimed. Small chance of that though.

If it's sunk cost, I thinks it's just best to get through it as quickly as possible so we can be ready to contend as soon as possible. Trade Hertl, Labanc, Burns and embrace the suck.

It depends on how much you believe in the young talent like an Eklund to help make your team competitive. Him and Wright could certainly be major catalysts to build around and you'd best plan to do that on their ELC's to really maximize your resources.

I thought Eklund was the best player on the Ice last night. He's entertaining to watch, but if the Sharks are going to be bad, I don't know if they will keep him.

If you are going to Trade Hertl at the deadline, having a guy like Eklund waiting in the wings wouldn't make that trade feel so bad.

Kane is gonna have to be a locker room vote situation where he'll be given basically one last strike to be on his best behavior.
