I was all in on keeping him in the NHL if he showed he could produce there, but it’s looking like, for all the reasons mentioned above, that he’s not quite ready right now.

From there I’m not sure the SEL is the right place to send him though. One thing I’ve noticed is that his passing is off, particularly on longer cross-ice/stretch passes, which is leading me to think that he’s still getting acclimated to the smaller ice. If I was in DW’s shoes I’d be inclined to send him to the Barracuda where they can continue to keep a close eye on him and work with him on facets of his game - and if the team earns it and he earns it he can be called up again later in the year.

Sending him the shl does nothing for him, he needs time to adjust to the smaller ice and less space. Not go back to the same league he has played and showed he can play in.

Send him away from Boughner and don’t let him get stuck in the sharks development system at the Barracuda.

He needs to play in Europe until Sharks get a new coach or he gets traded away.

The kid is getting better every game. Yes, there are mistakes, but there are also some really nice plays. The Nashville game was probably his worst of the season, and he had some great playmaking moves...

I don't think he has much to learn in the SHL. He needs to improve his endurance/stamina, and I think that's just going to happen by fire...

If they get a 1st for Labanc take that and run. No idea what his real value is but that would be awesome.

I'd put Pedersen and Gadjet in if they send E5 back. Pedersen was fine when he played with Bonino. Gadjet looked ok in his shifts there too. Both feel more dangerous offensively than Nieto. Or Give Pedersen a shot at 4C and put Weatherbody on the wing. Lot's of interchangeable parts in the bottom 6 IMO.
Big issue for Nieto is he PKs

If it's really that bad, I'd rather send him to the AHL than send him back. Gives us a chance to bring him back up if he adjusts faster than we hope for.
Does he still burn a year of his ELC in the AHL? I assume yes...? Or is that just a year toward UFA status?

Dunno he made a pretty great stretch pass to Hertl to break him in on a break away last night. Overall I agree though. Forest thru the trees. One or 2 great plays doesn't mean he's ready.

No, he is under contract with Djurgården
I could be wrong but im pretty sure once he accepted the ELC from the sharks, that counts as his out clause and he does not have any contract with Djurgarden. Never heard of a player being forced to return to a euro team on a loan considering a loan means hes still under contract to the sharks but just playing elsewhere.

No that contract is still valid. Since he is a first rounder The Sharks could put him in Barracuda but that's it. If he wasn't a first rounder they wouldn't even be able to play him in the AHL, then it would be NHL or back to Djurgården

Eklund's development is best served in either the AHL or NHL.

At this point, he is a highly skilled kid playing against men and it shows. The reason he is getting 3rd line minutes isn't because of the odd soft pass or play, it is because he consistently outmatched along the boards and lacks the physical strength necessary to consistently gain body position advantages. This makes him ineffective on the forecheck and the cycle unless someone gets him the puck in open ice.

These are not things he will be able to improve on until he matures physically.

They had some major misses in drafting for sure but there was a point where the Sharks had one of the highest games played for their draft picks. A whole bunch were depth type players but that still counts as success.
Oh I agree. I wasn't being sarcastic. No team hits on every pick but we've been consistently good at finding guys from nowhere and developing them. Even the Donskois and Melkers are massive success stories.

I didn't think you were, just adding a little more context for why I made the statement in the first place.

Thats interesting. Never heard of that happening, do you have an example of a player this rule applied to?
