No players back probably means DW thought/knew Vegas would take Mueller. Schlemko/Dillon that much more likely I would guess.

If wilson knew that mueller was the one going to be picked, and traded him before the draft and vegas took dillon or schlemko instead. He should be fired on the spot.

I would think trading Mueller would be more to do with our depth at D and where he was on the depth chart than anything else.

Also, honestly, I don't care if Vegas takes one of Dillon or Schlemko. They are bottom-pairing D-men and SHOULD be easily replaceable.

The only good part of this expansion draft is that the Sharks have little to lose in terms of assets. The best players we can lose are Boedker, Ward, Hansen, Dillon, Martin, Tierney or Schlemko. The only player there I don't want to lose is Martin and that is more to do with his chemistry with Burns than anything else. Honestly, I don't care if we lose any one in that list.

I care about losing schlemko. He is like the 2nd best offensive defenseman we have.

But again this all depends on if wilson knew mueller was going to be the one selected by vegas.

If he did and made this trade. Then he is an idiot because now we lose mueller (nothing to us), 5th round pick, schlemko/dillon/boedker/ward/tierney for a 2nd and 4th.

That is a horrible trade any way you slice it.

Schlemko is also on a very good contract on top of being the second best offensive d-man.

Dillon is a serviceable defenseman, but his cap hit and term are a little high for a bottom pairing d-man. I'd rather lose Ward or Boedker, but I won't cry over losing Dillon.

Didn't Mueller not play enough games to be eligible for selection?

He can be selected but can't be used as the defenseman requirements for expansion.

They would still have had to expose 1 of demelo, dillon, schlemko, braun, vlasic, burns, martin.

It would have caused expansion draft issues, I am guessing, but I would have liked DW to top Buffalo's offer for Beaulieu. Even if that means leaving Braun/Schlemko exposed...

That is true, but I think Beaulieu could be a better player. In other words, Beaulieu's value has bottomed.

Beaulieu is 24. What you see is what you get. He's a good player mind you but the Sharks have a surplus of defensemen of his caliber. It wouldn't have made sense to acquire him prior to the expansion draft.

So even if Vegas takes Schlemko (the player with the smallest cap hit) we'll have a little over $17mil to sign Thornton, Marleau, Tierney and another forward. Honestly, keeping both and adding Kovalchuk seems doable.

The other thing to account for monetarily is that landing Kovalchuk is going to require a trade so it's probable that some money goes the other way in such a transaction.

A low-key interesting idea is trying to get Mrzaek. I think he's better than Jones despite this past putrid season. He was showing all the makings of a future elite goalie until this year. He'll be cheaper than Jones too. Jones is probably worth a 1st again; too bad Calgary already traded for Smith.

IMO that is too risky for us.

I know Mrzaek had flashes of brilliance in the past, but he also due for over 4 million in QO next season. And this could really screw up our goaltending situation.

By the way, any thoughts on Dumba and Strome ? I feel like Dumba is an impact player who just need a change of scenery to elevate his game. The same goes for Strome.
