Before the Fresh-Prince-Fun gets out of hand and we as a group start to become uncharacteristically positive, I have to pull the brake:

A rather unspectacular weekend for our CHL-top-prospects:

Cagnoni: 1 assist, +4 in 2 wins (6-2, 5-2)
Halttunen: 1 assist, +/- 0 in 2 wins (5-0, 4-3 SOW)
Musty: 2 assists, -2 in a win and a loss (3-2, 3-4).

Sharks are in the top 4 now of Wheeler’s rankings with only Detroit, Columbus, and Buffalo. I could see the Sharks at #1.

I think we're gonna get 2 or 3. Think Detroit is at 4 and Columbus probably at 2. But what a turn around regardless. Wasn't too long ago that we were in the bottom 5

Shoutout Grier. Dude honestly has been amazing. Knows what direction he wants to go, and make moves that match the statements he makes.
Honestly, I have 0 complaints in relation to how he has picked up the pieces of this franchise. A couple more solid drafts, and we honestly will start to look like a really good, young, and exciting to watch squad.

What have you not liked that he has done?

He has put us in a position to lose, which is literally what he needed to do, while aquiring good assests for the future. Really looking forward to seeing how he runs this trade deadline, I feel that we are going to aquire some great assests for pieces that literally we do not need.

I’m fully supportive of what he’s done. I subscribe to the idea that these guys have forgotten more hockey than we can ever know.

I think most people here have been cautiously optimistic about Grier lately. The wishy-washy narrative around what the team was doing last year was annoying though but now that it's a clear rebuild, there hasn't been much to complain about from a team-building perspective.
It has been a clear rebuild since day one. GMMG traded Burns less than a week into his tenure, never engaged Timo Meier's agent on contract extension talks and reportedly approached every core player to ask if they wanted out immediately upon taking the job.

Fans focus too much on the meaningless PR babble when the only thing we should care about are the actions. Just like anointing DWJr. a prospect genius for citing Ozzy Wiesblatt's controlled zone entry percentage in a post draft interview was always laughable. Nothing these people say matters.

It seems to be improving but those who hate him are quite attack- like.

He was digging at everyone else. Alaskanice's thing is to be very positive, to the point of being aggressively negative toward anyone who is not very positive. So he's saying you're a unicorn for being pro Grier.

In reality, a lot of us are positive, optimistic, or at least cautiously optimistic about Grier so far. There are a few that think he should have gotten more for EK or that his signings have been underwhelming.

I think my biggest complaint is I thought the Burns trade was pretty lackluster. That said, he was obviously doing a vet a favor.

Pretty happy with everything after that and I really like that he seems very specific and surgical in his approach. He’s a pretty smooth operator so far. I think I’d really fall in love if he managed like one DW-style trade but we’re also just not there yet.

My main complaint with those early moves like trading for Kunin and Burns was just doing them before he got his real staff in place. Everything since he got his FO built up has been pretty solid.

MG has done marvellous job with the tools he was given. Burns trade doesn't count that much since it was almost his first day at the office, but it had to be done. Meier trade has turned into a steal of a trade so far fo us, Pittsburgh trade could even turn into a unprotected first. He signed couple of underwhelming contracts, but that's big part of rebuild to not make this team good enough to wander around that mild middle. But also has taken a chance on young defencemen with low risk but ok potential.
Next draft and free agency will show how MG sees the prospect pool and the future (If we pick outside of the 1st overall)

I’m not totally sure why they HAD to trade Burns right at that moment, and not wait even a few months or til the trade deadline. But maybe Burns was like GET ME THE f*** OUT OF HEEEERE

When Grier took over the sharks were in the worst state of all 32 teams. Eklund being the only notable prospect (and Bordeleau but has he even progressed since?). Very little draft picks (hence why he traded down in 2022; looking back I would rather have a Lekkerimaki/McGroarty/Kemell over Bystedt and the other two). And no cap flexibility due to having Karlsson, Vlasic, Hertl, Burns, and Couture taking up huge contracts.

The Meier trade has been fantastic. Depending who we select with PIT's 1st, the Karlsson one could too (especially with the extra $10M in cap). Yeah we could've bottomed out even more last year to select top-3...but the only reason we didn't was because of Karlsson's resurgence and Meier having a great first half....in which we traded both at all time highs. Smith has looked good, Musty has looked good, and we're in position for 4 top-50 picks this year.

Even the pro-scouting has been good...turning waiver guys like Megna, Eysimmont, etc. into picks. There's finally light at the end of the tunnel, even though it's going to be a very long tunnel.

What's Wheeler's criteria for prospect? I don't have The Athletic, and am curious who is eligible on those final teams.

Not a regular NHLer and under 23, I believe.

Anaheim being as high as they are with as many young studs as they have on the NHL roster has to be the top of the league. Now they just have to learn how to play hockey together apparently.

Interesting, didn't suspect them to be that high with only Musty, Mukh, Smith, and a few wildcards (Gushchin, Cagnonin, Havelid) in the prospect pool. I guess that's the nice part about having an elite prospect like Will Smith in the system.
