Prospect Info: Sharks Prospect Info & Discussion Thread XX

If we fell to say picking 5/6 would it be Interesting to actually offer that to the Rangers for Gabe? I know we need D but it would be nice to have synergy as well as someone closer to ready that lines up time wise to musty/smith.
God no... At 5/6 we're picking a prospect with a much better profile than Perreault. He's had a great year, doesn't mean he would have gone top 10 last year even in a redraft.

Hell no. I love Perreault but there’s no world where I’d do that. Much rather any of the defensemen around there than Perreault. If we want a small winger, might as well take Demidov, who’s better.

Thanks for the input. Because last year was so stacked it's hard for me to judge comparable value in this year's draft.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Perreault stacks up well and if he were eligible this year, I’d put him in the same tier with Eiserman, Iginla, Parekh, Helenius (ie guys I’d take in the 8-12 range).

More than us thinking Perreault is a can’t-miss prospect, it’s that he plays so well with Smith that makes him interesting.

It will be interesting to see how the Sharks handle Musty. He's too good for the OHL; I think there is an argument that another year there could potentially hurt his development. But, say after the preseason + some regular season games Musty is clearly struggling with the NHL pace...what do you do?
Europe

Loan him to a European team?

Since the game is snarky comments based on sample sizes of 1, playing a year in Europe seemed to have worked out OK for Austin Matthews.
If you want a serious answer, give a serious example. Musty has a lot in common with Goldobin: he’s a late-1st round pick with first line winger upside and scoring in the OHL is too easy for him. He might be at risk of developing lazy habits because he can get away with it if he doesn’t get a bump in competition soon.

Matthews is not a comparable situation at all. He was a superstar prospect who might go down as one of the greatest goalscorers of all time.

The other aspect is that Musty is American. Unlike European Goldobin, Musty might simply be unwilling to spend a year in Europe, where he’d have to learn a whole new culture and maybe even a new language. Furthermore, European pro leagues are not great development environments and sending Musty further out from our control and oversight doesn’t feel smart to me. I just don’t think it’s a good idea.

At the time, there was also a rumor that his grades weren’t good enough to play NCAA hockey.
Don't remember hearing that, but i remember the talk about the reasoning for the leaving the USA program was for money. And it was one of the reasons analysts were using against him at the draft lol.

Personally I don’t remember that… but you might be right, and like I said it was just a rumor perpetuated by some of the posters who were plugged into the NTDP at the time. The fact that Matthews doesn’t seem to be the brightest guy anecdotally makes me believe the rumor at least a little.

I was going to say something like that, but decided against it. Hockey players really are not the smartest tools in the shed, but for some reason listening to him makes it worse.

There's nothing wrong with Musty staying with the Sharks next year and scratching him when he struggles.
My biggest worry with him is the alleged maturity issues pre-draft which occasionally rears its ugly head during the season whether through the suspensions or just his cocky attitude. I don't know how much of it is true, but there does some to be a Zegras-like element to his personality and I worry abut his coping during the struggles.

I think it makes more sense for Musty to play in the NHL next year. He got a late preseason game this year, so clearly they think he’s close. If the sharks get lucky and draft Celebrini then I say f*** it and have him, Smith and Musty all in the NHL. Trial by fire.
