I think the ceiling on a Barabanov return is something like the 2nd and 3rd round picks Vegas traded for Janmark last year. For Hertl the ceiling is probably the Taylor Hall trade from NJ to the Coyotes which netted a 1st, 3rd and two mediocre prospects. Hall was a recent MVP and traded months earlier than Hertl will be so I don't think it's realistic to expect quite as much for him. Regardless I don't see how it's possible to get a legit blue chip asset here even if you package them together.

Those are basically market value returns. If we get more that would be awesome but we need to trade both players no matter what the offers look like.
Funny how you say “mediocre prospects” for Hall. Bahl was considered to be a top prospect and Merkley was a former first round pick. Neither were legit blue chippers but both were considered to be high end prospects. Yes neither really amounted to much but that’s not how they were viewed at the time. A comparable from the Sharks would be something like 1st+3rd+Wiesblatt+Kniazev/Hatakka (before this season)+Chmelevski. Kniazev/Hatakka aren’t perfect comparable to Bahl as we don’t have a close comparable to him but he was viewed to be a future top 4 D at the time of the trade.

At the time of the trade Nick Merkley had 16 points in 26 AHL games as a 22 year old on his final year of waiver exemption. In no way, shape or form is that a high end prospect. I would argue Merkley wasn't even a prospect at that point, he was already a 99% confirmed bust. Bahl was at least a legit prospect but he was a second round pick who had shown little to no progression since being drafted. Chmelevski and Kniazev are probably the closest analogues in the current Sharks system to what Merkley and Bahl were at the time of the Hall trade. That's the level of prospect you're looking at in a Hertl trade unless he agrees to an extension as part of the deal or something.

Merkley was a much better prospect than you’re giving him credit for. He was viewed the same as a Wiesblatt.

Well, Meier is an RFA so if we want to keep him we likely will, right?

If Hertl gets traded and we trade Meier, that’s definitely the fastest way to load up the team on picks/young talent but I’m not sure DW or Hasso, especially, are okay with losing two star forwards. If ticket prices are bad now I can’t imagine this team without them.

Also, yeah, we need some talented forwards to help the new guys be eased in. Can’t have Eklund be a #1 center the day he comes back.

Meier is only an RFA if the team extends him the 10 million dollar qualifying offer. If Meier is dead set on going somewhere that he wants to go, he could accept that QO and walk straight into UFA in 2024. If the team doesn't offer that QO, he's a UFA after this contract. Meier pretty much holds all the cards. The team is basically leaving it up to him to be willing to stay and, given our situation, he may feel it's better to sign for 7 years elsewhere.

To me, Meier is like Hertl. I'm fine with them re-signing knowing how big those contracts will be but I'm trading them if they aren't signed by a certain point. I'm not waiting for Hertl to make up his mind after the season. I'm not waiting for Meier to make up his mind after next season. Hertl should be traded at the deadline if he hasn't signed and Meier should be traded at next year's deadline if he hasn't signed. Sooner if you know already.

Absolutely false. Go look up any article written about the Hall trade and they all described Nick Merkley at the time as a player whose development had stalled and NHL future was in serious question. Merkley was waiver eligible the season after the trade which on its own kills the value of a player like that who hasn't established himself in the NHL. Wiesblatt is several years younger right now than Merkley was at the time of that trade so it's really just not comparable even if I do think Wiesblatt's future trajectory will be similar to Merkley's.

Nick Merkley was definitely seem around the same as Ozzy at the time of their drafts (both were taken with the final pick of their 1st rounds) but by the time of that trade his potential was much much worse.

Eklund playing 2nd line center, with Lekkerimaki on his wing.

Overall Eklund had a great period, two different backchecking steals that led to odd-man rushes the other way. Second one was with Lekkerimaki, who elected to just shoot instead of trying to make a play across to Eklund on the 2 on 1. I'm not convinced Eklund sticks at center in his career, but he's such a smart player I can see why they're putting him there. He's just a really engaged player who is always scouting for opportunities. Had one shot attempt I could see that ramped off defender's stick. Couple things I didn't like were he got hemmed into the boards pretty easily after trying to weave his way out of danger in the corner for too long. He was pretty alone in the corner though so I think he was just trying to find an out. He also has really good lateral and backwards mobility and his agility is fantastic, but I wish he had that effortless forward stride that a lot of NHLers with his size and skillset have that make them a "homerun" threat if they get a head of steam with the puck. I also think it's real dumb that he's on PP2 for this team, but last time I watched him he was on PP1 so who knows. Oh also Eklund had a fantastic zone entry on his PP2 time, weaved around a defenseman, passed right over the line to open space and his teammate picked it up. Just beautiful.

Lekkerimaki seems like he belongs at this level, and isn't sticking out in an overmatched way or anything. Just haven't seen a lot that stands out just yet. He has a good shot that can hit the net from range, but isn't super elite or anything. Wished he would have tried to make a play to Eklund on that 2 on 1 but that might just be my bias of wanting Eklund to get a goal and his shot wasn't particularly deceptive that he tried.

Great period from Eklund and Lekkerimaki. Eklund doing his Eklund things, heads up plays, great playmaking. Did take a penalty, which was a hold as he tried to get around a defender. He has a tendency to get bodied a little too easily and lose his footing.

Lekkerimaki was dangerous the whole period. Counted 3 high danger chances by him alone, including the goal he had. Has some speed to his game, and a decent shot. Liking him more and more. Seems like he should stick at this level for awhile given the chances he's getting. Crazy that he's only 17 too.

I was watching and noticed how Eklund has a propensity to fall alot. Don't know if it was just that sequence but he can definitely stand to work on his strength on his skates. Skating is gonna be a huge point of emphasis to work on for William. Fantastic talent, smarts, skills etc. Needs to be a stronger skater and I think that'll make him THAT much better.

Absolutely. Has a tendency to fall over. Think it's fixable though, he just needs to continue to do what he's doing. Overall a solid game from him. Really liked Lekkerimaki too, hope he's available for the Sharks
