Good period from both of them. Liked Coe a little more this time around. I think he does have smart positioning and a transition offense mindset, which can come off as floaty sometimes. He's really quick to make decisions with the puck in the offensive zone, and they're also normally smart decisions. He tried a few dekes which he couldn't finish, but it's fun to see. Saw him battle a few times in the offensive zone. His assist was a good shot and someone knocked in the rebound, good play from the faceoff.

Gushchin has a great motor, and it's telling that I saw Gushchin below his team's goalline battling at least 3 times, and Coe none, despite them both playing the wing. Gush wants to get the puck, and he gets it by trying to steal or battle, where Coe gets it by getting into a good position to get from his teammates. Prettiest play of the period by Gushchin was a cross-ice pass through 2-3 players, right on the tape. He gets a great whip on his shot and passes with his small stick.

Gushchin with the off the pants goal. Set up in front of the net well. The whole play was a product of his line with some excellent forechecking. Pano Fimis who is a draft eligible this year really set up the entire thing by keeping the puck in and muscling it through defenders until Gush and his linemate could collect. NB couldn't clear.

Well looks like I jinxed it. Gushchin got ejected it appears for a check to the head of NB's goalie. He slid outside the crease, right at the top, and his shoulder caught the goalie's head. Don't think it was intentional, looked more like the goalie just came out at him. NB"s goalie got injured though and pulled so they tossed Gushchin too.

Eeesh. Goes to OT, 3 on 3 and there’s a big net front scramble in front of NB’s goalie, all three Niagara players down around the net, two NB defenders trying to get the puck back, goalie flopping everywhere, and Coe actively skated away from the scrum to float in the d zone hoping the puck came out to him. Ultimately Niagara scores but the net is knocked off the moorings seconds before so it doesn’t count. I don’t know how he can see what is happening there and think he’s going to magically get the puck. I’ll try to clip it or something to show what I mean. Game eventually goes to shootout, Coe scores a nice one but ultimately NB loses. But man, really disappointed there in what was a good game from him overall before

That was a pretty poor decision. It still sounds like there were a number of positive signs elsewhere, though. Hopefully this is just a learning moment.

Yeah, not trying to discredit him or shit on him too much, just trying to understand how he plays. You hear a lot from scouts and internet posters/amateur scouts that just say "good defensively" "good skating" so much that everything gets blended together. Like the eliteprospects profile for Coe, the first line is "defense is the strongest element of his game". And that's just wrong.

Appreciate the reports Kcoyote. I think you have a good eye for detail and a scout's mind. Now get to work on getting rid of that scout's body and we might be able to plug you in the lineup for Weatherbooty before it's too late.

Its GOTTA be the coaches telling him to cherry pick for fast break opportunities. Thats what that looked like to me. I'm betting he thought the puck was gonna make its way around the boards but the Niagara player muscled it through. Its just hard to imagine he'd blatantly avoid an opportunity to help his team on a scramble in the crease. Seems like he's got a green light to dip outta the d zone early.

Cringeworthy. Even as a beer-leaguer, you don’t go high to cherry pick when every other skater on the ice is basically in your crease in a scrum.
3 on 3 OT. He was definitely gambling and taking a risk there. Obviously didn't work out too well. Maybe I'm reading too much into that short clip but the way the goalie pushed out that far, maybe in Coe's mind, if that puck deflects to a teammate from the goalie and opposing player impact at the side of the net, maybe a teammate gets the puck and can hit him on an easy breakaway? Like a said, a risk he took.

Yea I'm not sure if it's a terrible choice. If his d-men wins it then they have an outlet option to get the puck out. It's a risk but I don't think its necessarily wrong.

It’s a bad choice just because the odds he gets that puck are low. His man is just uncovered in the blue paint. It could be a thing from his coaches telling him to cherry pick, but I think even they would tell him to get back. Ultimately it’s the one thing that I’m hung up on about him. It’s fixable for sure. He just needs to know when to get back and when to stay gliding and waiting.
