Why can't you have both? For every Edmonton/Toronto example . You can say the same for Chicago and Pittsburgh. Team can build around one or multiple superstar. Florida has probably the worst example to give. They have a rooster full of superstar. Barkov (#2) both Sam (drafted top 5), Tkachuk and Ekblad.....

Draft a superstar and build the team around him. Like Florida did with Barkov.

Bergevin failed to build a team around Carey Price
They don't have a single 'superstar' just a bunch of good hockey players that are big, tough to play against, and care a whole lot.

Leo Carlesson isn't good?

He's certainly not the player you hope for when you get a top pick, you want to fail for a generational talent.

Probably similar. Nothing wrong with Carlsson and Fantilli. Carlsson needs a real coach and Fantilli decent linemates.

Just hoping for a franchise 'star' player, for once in my life

Yes, most teams have to draft top 5 multiple years within a 5 to 7 year period to get a generational talent. That's how it was for the caps, pens, oilers, and avs.

The Pens certainly made no bones they were going to get Sid no matter what, even sat their good players and goalie to make sure they tanked for Crosby. I hate that franchise so much

I was to young to remember pre Crosby hockey era (started following NHL with Crosby/Ovechkin debut) but how could Pens have tanked for Crosby, wasn’t 2004-2005 a lockout?

it was an unusual lottery but it was still weighted to favor the couple of tankers from the previous seasons

Yeah but I don’t understand the sitting their players and goalie part to tank for a Crosby. I mean they did this in 2003-2004? How could they have predicted it would have an impact on Crosby lottery?

Tkachuk has 2x100pts season and Barkov is one of the best 2 way center in the league. They are ''superstar'' in the league. Reinhart is having another monster season....

Nah. Superstars sell tickets when they come to town. People could care less about either of those two, but they will pay more to see Crosby, McDavid , Ovy.. the league only had a few 'superstars' the rest are just really good players. Barkov isn't marketable, he is a 'star player' but no 'superstar'. I think our opinion of 'superstar' is way different.

I'm just saying, I'm pretty sure we were near the top of the league for production from the backend last season. Unless I dreamt it.

We were 2nd for production from backend last end. That was largely led by Matheson's 60+ points. Matheson has no goals this year yet. But, we also got scoring from Guhle, Savard, Kovacevic & Barron.

I keep seeing posts about how the McKenna draft is supposed to be better. 🤷🏻‍♂️
I think most (pundits) refer to the draft-strength as 1st rounders.. this year there seems to be a fairly sizable drop off after top 7.. as such it is considered a weaker draft.. however, for bottom feeding teams like us, we still get the pick of the litter - it just comes down to the late 1st picks. Either way, we're still coming out of this year with a legit top 6. Desperately needed.

Barkov would own the City if we had him here he is far more than just a good player.
A 6'3" beast of a center with 725 points in 745 games played a PPG rate since year three.
Hard Heavy tough to play against Selke trophy winner.

2004 and 2005 were back to back generational drafts. Some teams were going ultimate tank commander in 2004 to grab ovechkin.

The pens were originally tanking for ovechkin and the lockout worked in a way that landed them Malkin and Crosby instead.

You build a winning culture by stacking high end talent that have compete already built into them. N'est-ce pas?

Say what we may to mock the Pens, they've long mastered the art of the tank. They are the tank masters.
They actually have 3 employees that have no job description and nobody is allowed to speak to them or about them , but their job is to be prepared if they go into tank mode. They have expertise , data, algorithms etc spanning decades. They override all management decisions and only the owners can object. As we speak Dubas is losing the power to manage the team.

I hope the kids in the next draft are better than Fantilli / Calrsson .....
Why? Carlsson is a pretty good player…

He plays on a bad team. It’s not easy for young players. You see the flashes of brillance in his game.

That’s why when i see people bashing on Slaf still, I find it weird. He produced 50 points while playing a pretty complete type of game, at 19 last season and is close to PPG this year at 20. Not even sure Carlsson and Fantilli will do that this year.

Are you being sarcastic or is this a true story?
