Obviously, Dickinson is still putting up a ton of points and seems to have replaced Cowan as the primary point of London's offense, but I haven't seen any of the games recently. Is he still out of control, or has he settled down a bit after those first few strange games?

I watched him yesterday for the first time in a week or so and he finally had the kind of game I've been wanting from him. Three points but at no time in the game did I feel he was making unnecessary pinches or risky stretch passes. No bad breakouts, no giveaways, strong in his own zone, and good box-outs netfront. Hopefully that's what we get going forward.

London as a whole has been weird so far this year. Even Barkey and Cowan haven't been great. Think as they hopefully settle their roster things will return to normal consistently.

not that we should rush him but saw some comments from London fans about not expecting him to be back for next season. Do you think he's on a trajectory to be in SJ next year?

Truly going to depend on if he takes the next step this season in London. As we all saw, his biggest and IMO only real issue is poise on breakouts, which is to be fair one of the most important things for a defenseman. If he fixes that up and gets up to NHL speed, then he's got every chance to make the Sharks. But if it's still a problem area, then he would flounder on the Sharks and I have no interest in rushing him if he isn't ready to be at least an average bottom pairing D. It's another unfortunate Musty-like situation where he's a young June birthday and could end up in the "nothing to learn from the CHL, too young for the AHL" purgatory. Plus, I have to assume Cagnoni will be on the Sharks at minimum by next year, and usually two teenage defensemen on an NHL roster isn't a recipe for success.

How's he looking as a passer, both out of the defensive zone and on the power play?

I think he's a guy we should be patient with. Another year in juniors will be unfortunate, as he would probably be ready to do for the Barracuda what Cagnoni is doing this year by 2025, but another year with the Hunters wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Have him really nail down the basics of his position so that he's ready to train to do it with less time and space in 2026.

I still think Roberts looked really poised for an 18 year old at the rookie faceoff in LA. We could use him or Misskey developing into a #4 out of nowhere.

His biggest fault right now is that that poise comes and goes. Yesterday, for instance, he looked great. He was engaged, participated in the attack, made smart passes, and was strong on the breakout. The issue is that there are lots of times where he's not that and he looks like a passenger at best or like he's too easily pressured into risky passes or plays or taking himself out of position against the opposition.

I have hope that enough reps as a contributor on the Giants can iron some of that out. Being the lead guy on the second pairing is a good first step for that. But it's going to take some time.

The thing that works in his favor is that he feels like the type who probably gets at least a minor league contract and chance to prove it at hte pro level in a year or two just because big, toolsy players like him are attractive lottery tickets. The org will likely keep giving him chances because of that "it's all there, we just need it to click" mentality because he is a 6'4 defender who skates well for his size and flashes an all-around game.

The thing I think that works against him is that Misskey might be a lower-ceiling type but if he already has a degree of physicality to his play then that makes him more attractive specifically someone you plug into the bottom half of your defensive depth because even though it's 2024 it's hard to escape the ages-old hockey truism that your 3rd pairing should be rugged, dependable defenders who are there to be tough to play against instead of being gambler types that might try to rush the puck up ice.

I haven't seen Misskey play yet this season as the Royals and Giants have yet to match up. In a bizarre scheduling quirk it looks like every single game they play against each other this season is part of a consecutive-nights home-and-home pair of games.

Move one of Schaefer, Dickinson, Cagnoni or Mukhamadullin to the right side. Acquire two right handed defensemen from outside the org. Defense sorted.
I feel like Cagnoni’s puck skills may give him the best advantage if asked to switch to the right but it’d be a great problem to have. I just hope at least one of Cags or Muk establish themselves by the end of this season.

Where is Schaefer in this all teenage left side?
Well, in the OHL for another season for starters. He's got a good frame for the future, but he's a string bean and doesn't have a man's body like Dickinson does. And Mukh isn't a teenager.

Long-term, I have to think Cagnoni is a good candidate for playing his off-side; the same way someone like Quinn Hughes or Rasmus Dahlin does. Schaefer also feels like someone who could make the switch.

Mukhamadullin has played his off side before IIRC
