Darn I completely missed the game after the 2nd period. Man I wish I saw that game instead of playing pool.

Oh well, glad we got the 2 points.

He battled hard.

That is what I wanted to hear. I don't care if you are a -20, with 20 turnovers, with 20 own goals, and 20pim as long as you battle hard. Kudos to you Mr Murray. You are THE BEST defenseman in NHL history because you battle hard, good sir!:sarcasm:

Matt Irwin with the Brentwood Bay Blunders

I thought Irwin was a bit overrated on our board. Yes, he can score goals, but he still lacks defensive positioning and stick positioning and can make bad decisions from time to time. He needs to work on his defensive-zone coverage, especially in front of his net, and learn to use his body better.

I see him no better than Braun last year.

Well it's his first year. Excited to watch him continue to develop.

Irwin makes me think that a lot of defensemen could put up more points if they simply took more risks what the puck. Sadly, that kind of play isn't really liked by coaching staffs...and they might have a point that the other way is more conducive to winning...

Hes 26..not exactly wet behind the ears. Hes a rookie at the NHL level but has plenty of pro experience. Irwin will probably never be a defensive stalwart but he can shoot and plays aggressive and hes shown to have a short memory in regards to his mistakes.

It's less "develop", and more that I think he could refine his defensive game, maybe get a bit better at skating.

Exactly. He gets caught flat footed and his indecisions have led to scoring chances and goals. He has a decent amount of defensive awareness and is a willing physical player..just needs a little refinement.

He's a very smart player. I think we'll see improvements when he gets completely used to NHL forwards.

Irwin really should be in the bottom 6 not on D.

That is unless he want's to go to Vlasic's school of how to successfully defend against an odd man rush.

To be fair to Irwin, the best way to defend against a 2 on 1 is to avoid having to play against it in the first place.

I think so. He'll have to do it. Defensemen that can't play well defensively rarely can hold down an NHL job, much less one on the Sharks.

In that way, Irwin isn't a great suitor for Boyle. I get that they seem to have chemistry, but I wish TMac would give Boyle-Stuart a chance.

On another note, it has only been two games, but Vlasic and Demers have looked pretty good. Limit the bone-headed plays, and Demers could insure a spot on this roster.
