I wonder what he is implying here?

He is basically saying that development is still key, and that the team is more focused on Pinto reaching his ceiling rather than slotting him in where he fits now. He’ll be sheltered at each level until achieving mastery, then he’ll be given more….

…. orrrr, they are still making sure Pinto works his ass off for every minute of pro time.

Maybe all of that, or none….. :)

Is DJ once again outsmarting himself again with these comments, much like the Sokolov comment before that? If Pinto is outplaying your other forwards, then he deserves the chance. He seems physically ready to handle day-to-day NHL.

Feels like deja vu. Last year post-COVID camp they went with a bunch of washed up veterans and a Pacquette of shit. No meritocracy. This quote from DJ once again lacks meritocracy. I hope Pinto is not discouraged and keeps on it to get a spot in the regular line up depleted of talent and skills he brings at centre.

Outplaying players at camp…. Relax, he’s a good player, but we have a Bochenski award for a reason, it doesn’t mean that you’re going to be the best player by the end of camp.

It’s good news, for a rookie especially, no need to try and frame things into being an issue.

Is DJ implying moving up and down with the AHL/NHL, or bottom 6/top 6?

Don't overthink it please

I'll take whatever DJ Smith says with a massive grain of salt, but I always find it fascinating when coaches/GM say things like, "the right approach is to move him up to the lineup when he is at a place where he comes up and never goes back down."

Why?

If Pinto starts the season in Ottawa, but after 10 games, is struggling, we can send him down for the next 72. Are those 10 games really going to hurt his development? If anything, they'll help, because he'll see what he needs to work on.

Lots of players spend an early year or two going back and forth. Hell, Batherson just did it.

At this point, DJ and Dorion should really cool it with the "best players will play" proclamations, since they themselves come out and say "well he's playing like one of our best players but that doesn't mean he'll get in the lineup" shortly after.

They make it so easy for people to think they have no idea what they're doing.

Good approach if he wasn't clearly better than the guys he's competing with, which I think he is. Either way Pinto will be in that slot before too long.

Penciling in Reihhardt White and Ennis as a 2nd line for this game... If they want to assess a 2nd line with White at C .. give him some 2nd line wingers.. It just seems like they are going through the motions and already know who is going to be here and who isn't

They simply don’t care man, it really is that simple. The coaching staff knows what they are doing and why they are doing it, they don’t need to worry about what the super-fan thinks.

A bunch of dudes hanging off every word from every interview and comparing and contrasting… Do you honestly expect anyone to care? Would you? I mean we are literally all experts in every field when ever someone needs a dose of ‘reality’ or have the ‘facts’ set straight for them.

The messaging from DJ is pretty clear, he’s a straight shooter, and he’s responding to the immediate situation, and immediate questions.

What DJ and PD need to do is continue to ignore what rabid online fans think and do, because as we know there is no reasoning with us type of people as we are so entrenched in our opinions, and are far more interested dissecting remarks as though we were challenging a journal article.

Just throw us another raw steak and let us razzle and snap at each other for it! That’s how I view us in here, and our sense of self importance :)

We are a small crazy and weird group in here that shouldn’t be catered to at all to be honest lol. I fit right in here with ma peeps….. ;)

Pinto looked like the best player on the ice wth Ennis - now White Gets his chance to do the same with Ennis.

It is painfully obvious that Pinto is a very good player - he isn't coming out of thin air as a surprise in camp.

This isn't a case of needing to dig deep in to his play and then decide if the pro coach knows more than us - he is an NHL player, full stop.

He can and should have a good size role at the NHL level and while OF COURSE playing in the AHL won't stunt his growth, he can learn just as much or more in Ottawa.

Bochenski has nothing to do with this one - Pinto will be a Calder nominee IMO.

Huh? I don’t think you understand the purpose of a message board.

It’s not to influence coaches and GMs. They’re not reading this. Of course they have reasons for doing what they’re doing. And of course they think they’re right. Otherwise they wouldn’t do it. Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

The point of a message board is for fans to discuss and analyze those decisions. Some people will agree, others will disagree.

It’s okay to have an original thought and opinion of your own. DJ won’t read this thread and get mad at you, don’t worry. He’s not inviting you to his end of season barbecue either way.

If you don’t like reading opinions, I’d suggest you stick to Sens press releases.

Here's what I see happening - we roll Norris / Tierney / White as our top 3 centers for half the season.

Around January/Feb when we're clearly out of the playoff picture and in the bottom 3, the team realizes "hey, maybe we were on to something last year with letting the best players play".

Pinto steps into the #2C role and we never look back.

For some reason DJ's word's of "the best players will play" doesn't apply to young guys. I'd actually say Greig and Ostapchuk are better players than Colin White right now but maybe that's a hot take.

I think DJ will be cautious for a very short period and Pinto will be given bigger minutes sooner than later. Usually you keep guys down in the lineup because they're learning how to play both sides of the puck, and you're minimizing defensive liability. But Pinto keeps demonstrating over and over that he has a great IQ and will earn that trust far quicker than most.

Probably already has that trust, but you can't come out and say before the season starts, "oh yeah, he's only got a dozen games of experience but we're giving him the #2 spot and hope he doesn't fail"

Pinto has that aura about him that instills confidence in a coach. He'll be counted on as a key player early in the season.
