Kyle Dubas used his Family as negotiation leverage to attempt to manipulate favor from the media and stall his negotiations with the man who pulled him out of nowhere (the SOO ), and had given him the best hockey job in the world .

2 days later the Family thing had disappeared suddenly and a request for more money had become the play ..... The Man who had given him everything a Hockey exec could dream off was betrayed and the wonder boy who had fooled everyone up to this point finally was fed his humble pie ... Good riddance Dubas - glad your gone you made a mess of this organization long enough - bring in some adults to run this team ( not the prima donna roster you built ) and let this be a message to future contract negotiations - its a privilege to be a Leaf - and if you just want to get paid - then GET !!! Just like your mentor Kyle !!

Shanny should be gone too. He brought in Dubas and tbh this was well overdue. Had Dubas not expressed he was considering stepping away, he would have extended him. If Shanny can't make some good decisions and get results this year he should be gone too. It's overdue at this point. Era of accountability.
Agreed! Shanahan is the common denominator in all of these playoff heartbreaks! We needed change from the top down.

I feel like I'm one of the test subjects in some study in mass humiliation.

Either that or I've entered the Twilight Zone.

There's no other explanation for this insanity. Literally nothing makes sense anymore. Dubas actually gets fired and there are STILL people trying to defend him.

Good Lord.

Even after a Stanley Cup finals appearance, Habs fans couldn't wait to run Bergevin out of town.

This is all Shanahan's fault.

If Shanahan is no better than anyone else at judging talent and assembling a team why should he remain president? The Leafs went from one level of impotence to another under his watch. Maybe he's the guy who can bottom a team without the ability to take it to the next level.

I don't know.

What I do know is this franchise is running out of time. And I have zero faith in Shanahan to fix it. Shanahan's greatest accomplishment to date has been coming in last place and drafting Matthews. His entire tenure has been defined by failure and loss.

And THIS is the guy ML$E trusts to get a THIRD shot at getting it right?

Shanny’s trying to save face here and throw Dubas under the bus. Yeah Dubas overplayed his hand but at the same time Shanny is trying to get everyone to overlook that he doesn’t seem to have a plan B set up at a critical time where the core players are approaching having NMC’s and in need of a change.

This is a bad time to have uncertainty, because Leafs have an opportunity to pivot with their core, with value in the trade market, and retool the roster.

I have bad vibes going into this off-season
This is what I've been saying and people are just rejoicing about Dubas being fired because they didn't like him.

Side note: People are overlooking that when Shanahan was asked if it was purely about money, he said no it wasn't. Clearly Dubas wanted something else besides more money.

I am concerned that we are going to hire someone who will be worse than Dubas or hire someone who doesn't break up the core 4/gets the wrong pieces in return.

I would say he used the press conference to set up the “I need to talk to my family because I just learned how hard this has been” delay when his boss thought they had a deal, Then had his agent execute a price jamdown knowing Shanny would look terrible if the deal fell apart, while all week talking to Shanny like it was done.

Just about the only thing that Shanny didn’t say, which is all over his words, is “I can’t trust this guy.”

You fire people you can’t trust.

That family question by Chris Johnston was clearly a seeded question based on how it was asked: "Recognizing what you said about there being a family and business aspect to your decision ..."

I don't think Dubas really wanted back without full autonomy the moment Shanahan didn't extend him last summer. And Dubas knows full automony is how you eventually make Shanahan redundant. The dramatics this week was a last ditch effort by Dubas to get complete control of the hockey department. And Dubas may have gotten his way with a Conference Finals berth or better.

There isn't a doubt in my mind that Dubas has put irons in the fire for his next landing place. IMO he will only be hired by an owner or a Board or an outgoing president. Any NHL team president with half a brain has to see the ambition and will to power in Dubas. Ambition and will to power for club presidents isn't a bad thing but it is when hiring an underling. You don't hire people who will angle to replace you unless you don't want to stay yourself.

With this move we just shot ourselves in the foot. We don't know what kind of GM we will get how he evealuates the team and what kind of return he will get for the players we have. It's gonna be a scary ride, this is the worst possible place we might be in for this era.

I’d love to see that contract counter from Dubas. Maybe he wanted more then just money. It could have been a bigger role.

Either way, Dubas went for the moon. It will be really hard to do better than the GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. But I do think he will land a GM job at some point. So it’s not like he can’t go somewhere and win a cup either.

If Dubas truly wanted to remain GM of the TML then he totally botched this situation.

If he only wanted to stay for max dollars and if not then leave for a better environment, then he played it decently. He maintains perception of being a desired commodity and he will get a chance to go to a calmer environment at some point.

I saw n twitter that new contract had dubas at 4 million per; Dubas countered with 6-7 million per year and full autonomy

Shanny said no thanks. good bye !

After disappointing exit year after year in series we should have won, doesn't it feel good to make a change?

With guys like Marner and Matthews who are in their primes, who knows how long it lasts. Now, we get to see what a new vision looks like with those pieces still at the top.

Keefe and Nylander can now be swapped out for a different feel too. Love the change.

Dreger mentioned Dubas had a ~4m x 4/5 offer which makes him one the best paid GMs despite having only 1 round of playoff win during his tenure.

Where do you get a job that gets you raise after failing objectives 4 years straight?

If you find a job where not only you keep your job after failing to achieve objectives and also get a raise

can you send me a link? I’d love to work there ;)

One thing that Shanahan doesn't say in his presser was how he felt when he heard Dubas said "everything is on the table"...Dubas was literally admitting that his vision and the way he'd built the team with the core 4 was all wrong, so by that token, Shanahan could also conclude that even Dubas' GM job is also on the table, and if Dubas' vision is wrong by his own admission, why would Shanahan continue to employ him and not seek another GM with a different vision?

I think Shanny did say he will keep an open mind for the new GM with new ideas and a GM that is experienced

How exactly is this franchise running out of time? Are we talking about the Coyotes here?
