Yzerman had poor playoff/leadership legacy for a long time - until they finally won a Cup.

Not true. Until Scotty B told Stevie Y to change it up.

"I mentioned to him that his stats would go down, but hopefully the team would do better," Bowman told NHL.com of one of his first conversations with Yzerman when he took over as the Detroit Red Wings coach in 1993. "He was the reason that it did better because he understood what it took and he wanted to be on a winner."

Well that's my point, it's usually Bunting who does the flopping (and it worked well, he was top 5 in the league during the season in drawing penalties, I agree it's surprising they didn't call any for him during the playoffs)

The rest of the team needs some of that in their game, though. I love that we try to fight through contact but sometimes you gotta go down. Tampa is so f***ing infuriating because they'll go down real easy (Corey Perry, I hate that guy)
I don't think it had anything to do situ going down easy, there were a number of calls without that and missed calls where we were down.

Winners win.

Period.

Calgary got dicked around with penalty calls vs the Stars and prevailed.
It's true, living in Calgary and knowing a lot of Flames fans, they never talked about Gaudreau or Tkachuk as losers. They are always quoted as winners around here. Lots of winning for those guys.

This is the biggest bunch of bs. Making changes after losing a series or 2 in the first round may be reactionary. Losing 6, and 4 under this GM, is a new record in the NHL for ineptitude. But no let's not make any changes; instead reward failure
So are you trading Marner, Matthews or Nylander?

Yzerman was told to change his game if he wanted to win or get traded.
Here you get a hug and a smile for almost winning.
People here would never go for someone’s stats going down with a coach like Trotz so they don’t want him.
If you have to change your game to win you change. If you have to change something on the team to win you change it.

Yes.......but was the best candidate chosen as his replacement? Were any other candidates even interviewed ?

Seems like Dubas had made his mind up on his buddy Keefe long in advance and didn't seem to look at other options. Sort of like the other "old boys" that the younger fans regularly complain about.
Considering they just had a 115 point season. Seems like a decent choice overall.

I am not against the idea of looking for a different coach, but after a record breaking (regular) season it's tough to say the hiring was the worst decision ever.

Yep I heard Dubas went down to the dressing room after they lost game 7, and personally hugged every single one of them. Crazy stuff.

From the total lack of caring about losing at the press conference it wouldn’t surprise me. They thought they did great.

Someone last year after the montreal loss pointed out that you can go back to every series we lost and point to an egregious mistake someone made that started the whole ball rolling or was directly responsible for the loss (Dermott, Galy etc.) So if that happens more than a couple of times...you need to have 2 levels of play. One- freelancing and doing risky things...Two- playing a robotic safe way when needed. We can't seem to do both of those when warranted. We keep thinking offense will be the cure when it very well might be defense that fixes this.

Leafs have a somewhat unconventional attitude to risk vs reward.

That is they hold the puck longer, pinch more aggressively, go east west at unexpected times, hold the puck in areas where they are vulnerable to turnover and counter rush with nobody back at speed, and most importantly they open up high risk plays to everyone on their roster.

If a more conventional or defensively oriented team is 40-60 on high skill, high danger risk plays, the Leafs are willing to go the inverse at 60-40. They profit by squeezing out the extra skill, but will get burned on a higher volume of plays, and are also liable to breaking down at spectacularly bad times because executing gets harder and harder under pressure.

What exactly did you expect? Someone to bang their fist on the table or yell at a reporter? They were pretty clear losing wasn’t acceptable, the cup is the goal, not winning a round, and that changes and evaluations on everyone top to bottom on the roster were underway, there was no “can and wills” or “the core stays” like in the past… why would you want to look like an assclown and reactionary, or tip your hand? . I wonder how many of you here have ever been in a professional setting.

I agree with this and think that maybe a change of philosophy to reign it back to maybe a 50/50 not 60/40 might be what helps this team get over the hump in those tight moments, but I also think it’s pretty normal for fans of any team sport to point to a critical moment of failure that led to their demise.

Who said that the hiring was the worst decision ever?

Was it a decent choice? I guess

Should the Toronto Maple Leafs, with all of the resources at their disposal, settle for a decent choice, or should they make the absolute best choice that is possible?

Or do they find a way to go 70-30 again and just gas it like Florida seems to?

We're one one more Petan/Malgin/Kerfoot deal away from "closing" in 2023. I can just feel it.

Apologies in advance for my twisted imagination:

How about a humiliating 1st round loss to a re-emergent Montreal team in the 1st round of the 2023 playoffs?
Only if it's with Shane wright scoring 3 game winning goals

I have, and you get canned if you don’t deliver. Period. Everyting is way too cozy around here.

I can’t accept at least Keefe doesn’t go, what type of a message are we sending.

It's possible to be upset about losing a tight hard fought series and still acknowledge that the team played well overall.

I feel the same way. Unlike past playoff disappointments, I thought we deserved to win the series this time but got robbed by the officials. This one felt a lot like 1993 against LA.
