“@stevezipay: #NYR asked NHL if sked could be changed for planned St. Louis funeral Saturday. League declined to accomodate. Family switched days.â€

Gary Bettman ladies and gentleman…

I get that but now they're saying they wouldn't even let them switch it until the evening because of the Preakness which is a bogus excuse considering coverage is usually done by 7.

Classy stuff, Buttman. Nice to see the Rangers try to watch out for their players, even the new ones. They are really starting to gel as a group.

In fairness, that's a bit much to ask imo.

Agreed. The schedulemakers already adhere to the needs of the league, the network, and the arenas. Accommodating individual players in addition to that makes it even more difficult. And then once they grant one player's request to change the schedule, they have to do it for everyone. It's a slippery slope.

The game should have never been at 1pm, it should have been at 8pm. **** NBC. That is the real issue.

HNIC at 1pm. Quality...:shakehead

Eh, I can see why. You can't just change the whole schedule because of this, as bad as that may sound. Even if it is only one game.

Also, its funny that the Habs talked about being disrespected by the Bruins and their fans so much, yet I feel like they are disrespecting the Rangers somewhat. The Rangers aren't going to be an easy out no matter who they play (I hope) like some are acting.

It really is disgusting, but not AT ALL surprising...

$$$$$ business will always trump compassion/sympathy/humanity/the right thing to do

It's really not though, the NHL isn't in a position to accommodate that request. It's a huge deal to move a game, and it sets a very bad precedent to do that for a family matter.

The only times I've heard of the NHL moving games is when the weather's so bad that it's not possible / dangerous for the teams/fans to get to the arena, or when there's a terrorist attack like in boston.

It's really not as simple as that. Yeah, it sucks that St. Louis's mom died, but they're gonna change the schedule to accommodate him. He rescheduled the funeral, so it's a non issue at best.

It's not to just accommodate him, but the entire team as I am sure they all plan to attend to pay their respects. Regardless I agree, it's still a lot to ask for. Moot point, they changed the day so it works out.

Even still, it's unreasonable to ask the NHL to change a game when the date of the funeral can be changed.

I think it's fair to ask the NHL if the game can be pushed back to the evening but in the end it's probably more about TV ratings and schedules than it is about the actual hockey games

I would think it would be easier to reschedule a funeral than it would for the NHL to accommodate these wishes. If they did, they would have to do it for every funeral. I don't mean to sound heartless but that's just the nature of the business.

People complaining to Bettman about not changing the schedule need to realize there's more than just moving the game 1 day. It has an effect on many more things. Is the Bell Centre available on Sunday? Who will play on Saturday if not the Rangers? I doubt they want to start the Conference finals with a rest-day (i.e. no hockey on TV).

Also, if they make an exception for this, what is next? Moving a game because a player gets married? Or because a player's wife is giving birth?

Agreed. However, I believe the Rangers made the request before a game was even scheduled, which changes the situation a bit. Still, probably the right call by the league, however annoying it is.

The game was scheduled though, just not announced officially because at the time it was scheduled it was TBA vs TBA. The plan to have Game 1 of the ECF start on saturday was likely made a while ago.

I think the Rangers Organization asked because the entire team was going to attend. It's a little different but no way in hell any professional league would accommodate a funeral, short of a Yaroslavl tragedy.
