My opinion of the Canadians:

They are a worse version of this year's Rangers team.

Worse goalie. Worse defense. Worse offense.

They're not as balanced as us. They don't have the big time players. Their scoring by committee isn't as potent as ours. Their defense has more holes and plays worse as a group than ours.

And they play a similar style of hockey, IMO.

They approached the Boston series quite noteworthy. Played conservative hockey on the road and really aggressively at home.

Winning in Montreal is never easy. But, I don't even think that the way that Montreal played against Boston is indicative of how good they are. Boston had their worst version of their team in the last 4 or so years. Their defense was a real weak spot for a team that depends on strong defensive play to really succeed. Their offense was as unreliable as it ever has been. Meanwhile, Montreal played their biggest rivals to a tee. Frustrating and coaxing them into undisciplined hockey and uncharacteristic play.

We're not rivals with Montreal. They shouldn't be able to coax us into undisciplined play because not only are we a relatively tame and disciplined hockey team, but we don't have the same emotional significance playing this franchise as the Bruins did. As I said, they have a worse goalie, a worse defense, and a worse offense than our current team. Stay disciplined and it should be fairly indicative of who is the better team in the series.

lol :shakehead the same was said after Tampa....

As a Habs fan I got nothning but respect for the NY Rangers.

Rangers in 6. They win it at home.

Yes we played two 7 game series, but the Habs just got done a 7 game series with the most physical team in the league. We need to do what the Penguins did to us in games 3 and 4. FINISH EVERY check at Bell Centre and steal game 1 or 2.

I'm picking the Rangers in 6. The Ranger have a better and deeper defense, however, Montreal has the best back line threat in Subban.

The Rangers won't get out skated, the forwards are about even, Rangers are a bit bigger. They really can use Nash to pop a few in this series. Goalies cancel each other out until otherwise. Rangers get the edge in coaching. This Devil fan will be rooting for the Rangers to go all the way .

This team and coach is like able, plus the Rangers winning it all is good for NY and maybe the Devils. With Montreal and the Rangers, two teams with speed in the conference final, may finally wake up Lou to get younger and faster. Good luck!

Living in Montreal, it's going to be hell watching this series, especially IF/when we lose a game. The city is nuts right now and all the fans are already thinking about the finals.

As a Rangers fan, I'm cautiously optimistic about this series. We need to solve Price, who's playing solid since the Olympics, and is full of confidence right now. We need to stop their PP (especially Subban), since I feel we're a better 5 on 5 team than they are. Just as important, like any team, we need to get some bounces. The Habs got practically all the bounces against the Bruins and we hit many, many posts against the Pens!

Counter-attacks and the Montreal power play are the biggest concerns.

Bosotns D was horrendous in the series. Chara especially. Marchand and Bergeron were invisible too and MTL still went to game 7. If our guys show up like they are supposed to then i have all the confidence in the world we can win.

Patch and vanek are no where compared to Malkin and Crosby. And letang and subban are a wash.. we have the better goalie... pretty much the most even series there is... my X factor will be Kreider

pk subban just said in postgame interview with pierre mcguirre (paraphrasing) "our city is gonna be nuts. i feel sorry for the next team that comes in here"

tool

That's great for a player to say. Rally your troops, show some pride in your fanbase and your team. Do you want him to be a robot and give the cliche "You want to hold serve at home y'know? Then work on the road and see if you can steal one"

Subban gets way too much hate for no reason. He's a bit of a dick but so what? He's not freakin Lucic.

Wishing you guys the best of luck and hope you make it to the Finals to give Lundqvist a hard earned shot at the Cup.

Keep in mind that you don't want Dave Jackson as a ref in any games in this series. He is from Montreal. He butchered Games 2 and 7 of the Boston-Montreal series heavily in favor of Montreal. Six penalties to the Bruins and only one to the Habs. How does that happen in a Game 7? Marchand gets cross checked in the head and gets the penalty. I understand you may think this is sour grapes but it sucks when you have to beat the other team and the referee who is blatantly favoring them.

I certainly don't wish that on you. I hope you win the Cup.

If you actually watched the Subban interview during the Kings-Ducks game, it's a great interview. He was poised and professional, and just excited that his team had just won. I mean ****, he kissed Pierre at the end lol. If you haven't seen it, watch the interview before you judge it.

Our offense is going to be the key IMHO

If Nash doesn't show... And we need Boyle et all to pot goals we are going to be in trouble.

Fleury shut us out in two games straight for Christ's sake. Have people forgotten about that NYR squad?

Price could shut us down when we're having a good night offensively.

This will be tough... I'd take another game 7 right now.

It's a little surprising that we won't need to get past the Bruins to get to the SCF, but I think I've figured out what's going on, and it's making me very optimistic.

This season was rigged by a screenwriter and we're the protagonist!

It's the classic plotline.

- The revitalization of the team with a new coach
- Failing miserably at the start of the season
- Hitting rock bottom.
- Finding your game, and scrambling to get to the playoffs
- Then with each playoff series, a subplot:
-> Flyers series, the Carcillo story and always failing to get the 2 game lead.
-> Pitt series, the personal struggles of MSL and the win from the 3-1 deficit

Now here is what I see coming:
-> ECF: Habs series: Hank gets injured in game two and NYR fall behind 2-0 in the series. Talbot steps in and we win 4 straight.
-> SCF: Hawks series: Hawks coach gets incapacitated due to illness during WCF. They quickly hire Torts (antagonist) to help them finish the season. NYR fall behind 3-0 in games, but fight their way back. Then, with 3 minutes left in game 7 Rick Nash scores his first 3 goals of the playoffs to turn a 2-0 lead into a 3-2 win.

It's almost too obvious...

Sir, you just sold your first hollywood script/. Congratulations! One thing...we need a romantic subplot between a Ranger player and some kind of girl associated with Montreals franchise perhaps as a FO person or cheerleader....better yet wife of a player oooo scandal!

you're making the same mistakes as Habs fans who think it's going to be easy, for the same reason probably, you havent watched the other team all that much, you don't know a lot about the opponent's players.

thinking this is a win because the other team is "worse" is foolish IMO, neither team are bad cause they dont have a Gretzky or Lemieux on it you know...

you're getting fooled by the fact there isnt much star power on our team, Sorry! not every team has Malkin AND Crosby on it! besides, it's not like you guys have much star power either... and it doesnt make you any less deserving of playing this 3rd round ;)

my take ? winner will be the team who's defensive corp handle the opponent's speed better. And it's hard to predict wich corp it will be as they're both experienced.

if you guys are into specifics, you might want to look for Eller, Bournival and Gallagher, they may not be known as much as Subban or Price, but they're damn efficient at what they do... besides, Gallagher (shut down line, RW) and Eller (3rd line C) are our forwards with the most points.

You are right. Any team that has just won two rounds is playing well so the natural inclination of a fan is to assume you're going to win again.
These teams are really similar. Rangers D might be a little more of a shutdown group while Montreal D has more offensive punch.
Forward groups are very similar. Maybe NYR have more star power but both teams really look for scoring from three lines and have been getting production from their 4th line.
Price has been one of the top 3 or 4 goalies in the league this year. Unusal for NYR to go into a series and NOT have an edge in goaltending but that is the case. I would say that's even matchup heading in.

After all the analysis, these games usually boil down to which goalie plays better and which team gets bounces . I believe the buzzword used today is "Puck Luck".

Both teams Game 7's perfect example. Boston and Pittsburgh both deserved better fate but got beat by the goalie.

I seriously need to get out of this city for a couple of weeks. The vibe around here is that we are easy pickings.
I do understand though, we suck against mtl and habs fan dont watch other teams play, so they dont see that we are good against most teams.

It's funny, Rangers fans have been *****ing all year about them being not likable.

I'd suggest everyone stay away from the main board. The snooty hockey "elitists" already have their noses in the air saying that this is the worst Eastern Conference Finals in a while and that the Western Conference team will win the Cup. And it's only going to get worse.

I think it's best that I just stay in here.....

although I probably won't :naughty:

They aren't going to be able to outright stop Subban, just like they can't outright stop Malkin. It's about containing him and staying out of the box.

A lot of Montreal's games against Boston were about weathering the storm in their own zone, then breaking out with odd man rushes. That means we'll need creativity from our forwards to break down their defense. We should have much more puck possession than against Pittsburgh, and that should aid the Brassard unit.

I definitely think its a better matchup but it doesnt mean the Rangers have a better shot to win. Boston seemed to be missing something that series. IT just goes to show - we sit here and are critical of the Rangers and how they are built but here we are with the best team in the East, out of it. Its all about who makes it happen, who gets hot. The Rangers are a good team. Great? Well that remains to be seen.

Some key parts of the matchup for me.

The Rangers have to be wary of the speed. It might work into their favor to open it up a little bit but it could go either way. I see this being a highly entertaining series. Obviously Subban needs to be managed. Thats a big wildcard for the Habs. Usually every cup contender has a threat from the backline, which is why I believe the most important player this series needs to be McDonagh for the Rangers. He needs to match Subbans output. He can do it, but to do that the Rangers will need to make an effort to not allow Subban time and space to operate. They need to limit Subban and allow McDonagh to surprise the Habs. He needs to get some of that offensive flair back into his game. We saw flashes of it at the end of the Pens series.

Special teams will no doubt be a key. The Rangers took a vacation on their PP for a long stretch and when they finally got it going a little bit they came back from a 3-1 deficit. Its going to be huge. Could see this series being a huge momentum see-saw with the speed and the chances and special teams will be very important in managing that. Even if they dont score, they need to have sound entries, set it up and get chances.

As always, goaltending will be a key. I gotta say, Henrik Lundqvist - in all of the years ive watched him, this is THE best ive seen him play, bar none. The last 4 or 5 games (even in loses) i thought he was tracking the puck exceptionally and had a slightly different air about him that ive never seen before. I think it takes a fan whos watched him for years to notice it. Its very subtle. Hes very confident in all of his movements, he's incredibly focused, he WANTS the puck on him and hes even playing the puck better and with more decisiveness. Hopefully the 3 days off doesnt effect that, but mentally, even in interviews, he's completely on it right now. Hes got two more game 7 wins in his pocket, hes got experience in conference finals, hes got a ton of post season experience and he's been the difference. Price will have to match all of that. Hes capable. But if Lundqvist gets into the Habs head, goaltending becomes the focus and that puts a lot of pressure on Price to perform.

Depth will also be a key. The Habs have 3 lines. The Rangers have 4 and AV has found a terrific balance in using all of the players in the right spots at all times. He has also leanred from past failures and is taking a page out of Julien's playbook with short shifts and trust. Everyone is pulling their weight and you cannot underestimate that factor in this series. The Habs have a nice thing going too, but it doesnt permeate throughout the full lineup.

Home ice advantage will make a difference. Which is why its so important for the Rangers to take one of the first two in Montreal. Henrik in particular needs to take that curse and boot it out the window right away, make it a non-issue, otherwise NBC and all of the media outlets will start flashing those graphics and history and THAT will become the focus.

Defense is the most important aspect in this series imo. I think at their core, the Rangers D corps and forwards have a better ability to shut things down, in various zones, as a 5 man unit. I think the top 4 D for the Rangers, defensively - are better and if they show that thats an enormous advantage. But they all need to sprinkle just a little bit of offense into their game to match the Habs. If they can do that and be threats on their own (and i believe they can be) that will be a big part of any success the Rangers may have. Im looking for guys like Klein and Stralman to come up into the slot and get a big goal here or there. Stralmans been there the entire postseason and Klein has quietly started to do that (a la Mike Sauer) and there will be opportunities to bury a puck or two and they have to bear down and convert those chances.

I thought that their PMDs played great against Boston's hard forecheck. They made crisp stretch passes which allowed them to get out and run on the Bruins. We have to be aware of these passes and avoid getting caught in transition. Limit the odd-man rushes, let Hank bail us out on a few, and were on our way to the SCF.

Completely agree. We shouldn't have to sit back as much this series. Our D should have a much easier time handling breakouts as well. I hope this rest gives guys like G, Staal and McD time to recuperate as much as possible as well.

id be curious to know how many posts were hit by bawstun in each of the montreal wins.

it seemed to me like Montreal got INCREDIBLY lucky in that series.

they are a good team, but man, they sure got the benefit of a lot of iron.

How many posts did we hit in the Pitt series....seemed like 2 a game.

Few guys the Rangers will have to look out for:

Pacorietty
Gionta
Subban
Prust

The Rangers need it impose their will from the start. I'm looking at you U Kreider.

Prust over Vanek, Briere, even Weise, etc?

Prust is not the factor he was on the Rangers in 11-12. I'm way more concerned about almost everyone else on the roster. I think our 4th line is one of the best, if not the best in the NHL. They played a huge hand in winning us both series'.
