Why is it assumed he will be signing an eight year deal? It would make more sense to sign for 2-3 years and become a UFA when the cap is 90+ million.
I'm with ya on this one.

I can see him going for 8.5-9M x 1 year extension as an injury insurance policy for his RFA. Then he can negotiate his UFA cap hike big bucks 10-11M x 8 years along with the expected salary cap hike in 2024.

My money is on one of:
- 8.75M x 2 years
- 9.5M x 8 years with NTC and a "trade me to one of these 5 teams" handshake agreement.

That's delusional.

Ottawa will have to pay him more than Stutzle if they want to keep him around.

His qualifying offer is like 8M. There's nothing stopping him from taking his QO, going to free agency, and getting Panarin money.

Ottawa is looking at 10M.

I say 8.250
You say 10.000

I'll quit HF if you're closer. You quit if I'm closer. Let's see who's delusional.

Kevin v Kevin for all the marbles!

He's a quality first liner a consistent goal scorer. I think we had all safely assumed that Ottawa was trying to extend him. Why wouldn't they be?

I think everyone knew Ottawa would want to extend, the big question was always why would Debrincat want to extend in Ottawa.

If he's smart he'll play a full year there before deciding if he wants to spent another 8 years there.

Coming from a Montreal fan?

Montreal has a good outlook, not as good as Ottawa admittedly...but I'm not saying Debrincat should go to Montreal instead lol.

Also There is more to hockey than your team. Maybe turnout will improve now that the team is on a better path but time will tell, they couldn't even sell out in their home games against Pittsburgh in the ECF

There's also more to life than just hockey, and as much as I love the city of Ottawa, Montreal is better in so many ways. I was born and raised in Montreal and then moved to Ottawa for 12 years and I think Montreal is more beautiful, vibrant and lively. And as much as people say Ottawa is nice and quiet, and a great place to raise a family, Montreal can offer all that as well.

There's something to be said about a) wanting to be part of one of the best young cores in the league and b) not wanting to be in the spotlight of a team like Montreal or Toronto whose fanbases will turn on you in an instant if you aren't a superstar.

A guy like Debrincat, who admittedly says he lives a very low-key lifestyle, should probably find a place like Ottawa attractive.

I'm not saying you are suggesting Debrincat go to a place like Montreal...but compare the two for a second. Why would you ever sign with a team that is rebuilding for 5-8 years, waste your prime, AND be in the spotlight?

If that's the number then he simply won't be signed.
Is the stipulation with the Senators?

Because I think most readers interpreted what you said as DeBrincat would definitely be signed for less than 9.125 (midway to 10 from 8.25). And if you polled it, I'm sure the majority would guess that he'll sign a long term AAV > than 9.125, either with the Senators or elsewhere.
