Confirmed with Link: Sens trade 9oa for Eklund and prospects

Both flawed players, but the answer's McTavish and it's not close.

Eklund's a luxury version of Matias Maccelli and a very, very poor version of Nikolaj Ehlers.

Hard to fathom and accept that Staios just gave up pick #9 for that.
I would take the 50 to 60 pts guy that plays a two way game over the molasses slow guy that puts up 40 and can't defend

9OA for a 2nd liner whose best season was 58* points?

Ok, we did get a couple future third liners, which we don't need but it's.....something.

We're not replacing Brady on the first line with a #25 and a 2029 1st lol.

Looks like we're going to be a bubble team for the near future until we go into yet another rebuild.

Was kinda hoping for a Rackell plus Karlsson (50% retained) move and then one of LAF or McTavish move but Eklund wasn't on my radar because I didn't think he was available. He's an offensive creator and plays both ends well and with effort... I dig it. He will fit Green's defensive structure too. Nice work by Staios imo. One more add and we will be a better roster than last year imo.

Has history playing with Zetterlund too. I think they were linemates for a bit that year we acquired Z

The 9th overall I would imagine averages out to be 2nd line caliber players, so I'm not sure what you were expecting in return for that pick.

I don't think we'll ever know for certain, but I hope your last sentence isn't the case, that's just weak if it is.

Time to look past this chapter now. On a side note, I'm not sure how I feel about this #9 trade yet...
I don't mind it... Low cap hit for what he brings. We were unlikely to draft that pick anyways. In an ideal world would have preferred we package it up but prices have been nutty.

Still room to make a trade or throw an offer sheet at someone

I'd be lying if I said I have watched Eklund a ton during his time in San Jose, but I remember as a prospect he was an absolute puckhound and a very intelligent player.

He's not a goal scorer and has never been one, but he could be an excellent fit beside a goal scoring center like Cozens/Pinto on the 2nd line.

Yeah if Tkachuk was still on the first line this would have been a fantastic add to fill out the top-6. Problem is we just traded our best trade asset for an "ok" 2nd liner and now we've got nothing much left to snag what we really needed.

Staios and company are just panicking to do anything and it started Sunday. The 25th and 32nd to compensate better be an OHL & WHL prospects and we'll figure it out in a few years.

They’re betting there is more there. Worked with Cozens. Eklund is only 23.

We don’t have to do it with one player.

Eklund Pinto Amadio
Is an awesome shutdown line with good offensive potential

I was hoping for more from 9OA but we still have a lot of draft capital. Not upset but not over the moon.

San Jose took advantage of the situation Staos was in.

Similar top Washington with Chychrun.

It's just the reality of dealing as the Senators. NMCs, small market team, etc.

I guarantee we had better options for the 9th overall, but the players likely had protection, or were RFAs who didn't want to sign here.

Staios needed to make a move. He simply couldn't go into the season without a replacement in the top 6 for Tkachuk, and Florida wouldn't give him a roster player.

Again, as someone who watches a lot of western conference hockey, this is disgusting and reeks of desperation (like the Bobby Ryan trade).

Eklund is a fine player (skilled, small complementary playmaker), but he's NOT worth the 9th overall pick in this draft.

Not even close.
A skilled complimentary player is what you get with that kind of pick. You aren't getting a stand alone line driver. + we got a serviceable prospect in Halttunen.

Eklund is a perfectly reasonable return and the true value of the trade will now come down to fit and how Green is able to utilize him. Ie, whether he tops out as a 60 pt RW2 or if the right situation allows him to develop into a 75-80 RW1. My money is on the former considering the situation he entered the league in in SJ.

Also have to give some value to cost control and 2029 RFA status.

Eklund is a fine addition on his own, but he's absolutely not worth the 9OA at all, and now Staios will need to pull off a miracle to get us a player who can actually create offense. Eklund is anything but a shooter.

Cost controlled and leaves room for another bigger move or two. The two prospects look decent and we still have 2x1st and a 2nd to trade for upgrades.

Downside is I doubt we move Zetterlund now.
This is likely the nail in the coffin for me as a Sens fan if Staios made this shitty trade with an intention to keep Zetterlund. It would be a clear indication that Staios doesn't know what he is doing and just doubles down on his bad moves.

I absolutely love what Staios has done the past 72 hours.

Turned a disgruntled Tkachuk only 2 seasons away from a 13-14M long-term deal into Eklund, two prospects, two 1sts and a 2nd is tidy work.

As of today we're only slightly worse in the present and a hell of a lot more promising in the future.

What's wrong with Zetterlund? He's a solid 3rd line player and he's young enough to be here for the foreseeable future.

All true, but people who were dreaming about us getting a Robertson type can now put that fantasy to rest. We have nothing left of real value which could get us anything better than what we just got with the 9OA.

Neither would be Ottawa Senators if I had a say in it, but gun to the head, I'd pick Mctavish everytime.

Yes, his skating needs to improve, but he's a much more projectable player than Eklund, who tries but simply doesn't possess the same upside.

Good on Staios for getting the assets he did in the Brady trade in the first place. However, this is a very poor use of the biggest one of them so far.

LOVED the Cozens trade from day 1 and LOATHED (still do) the Chychrun one. This Eklund deal reeks of desperation and is right up there with the latter.

At a time when we need shrewdness, Steve Staios continues to be a mixed bag.
