That reminds me of my days as a kid, walking the path along the river behind the parliament buildings. There were still a fair bit of floating logs down there back then (when the log driver's waltz was still relevant), and tied up in groups at various areas of the river. Kinda crazy that we haven't seen that around here in a good 40+ years now.
The more I get into woodworking and furniture making here, the more relevant the history of that industry becomes. I would have loved to have seen that.

I got into a house today that had millwork dating back to the OG lumber barons of Ottawa, just incredible work that's about to go through a big restoration. Hoping I can get some restoration work out of it, even if it's just a door or two.

Semi's, and other large fleet vehicles will go Hydrogen because it makes the most sense. Quick refueling and turn around.

The vast majority of people will be using an electric vehicle.

Hydrogen is currently a really expensive fuel source, and if everyone else is using battery based vehicles, you'll never get the infrastructure in place to refuel with hydrogen, except maybe for things like ships.
There should be some additional focus on industrial emissions as those are larger than all electrical grid and transportation (all modes/systems) combined. Super-hot intense heat is required by certain industries like forging steel or making cement. One solution is thermal batteries, which in part or in some cases has been called “hot rocks in a box”.

As for new forms of energy, nuclear fusion (unlike nuclear fission). They’ve been working on this in the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California.

The two most obvious fuels are sunlight & wind. They are also a renewable energy.

Excellent post.

One complaint. The highlighted is impossible.
1) Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can be transformed. It does obey laws of thermodynamics. Which means that, as we transform them, they loose OOOMMMFFF.

Nothing is renewable, except your drivers license and OHIP card.

Even more concerning is: harnessing this energy, requires equipment that is often enough problematic in its own right. Energy consuming to produce, and a burden on us in terms of sourcing and disposal. Batteries are nasty. They will represent the biggest danger to humanity in the second half of this century.

And so when we use terms like renewable. It creates a false narrative and creates more problems than it solves. Now people can consume recklessly, all the while assuming, they are doing good. Now the dimwit Molly house wife, will book a nail salon appointment in Montreal and not Ottawa. Because it is more chique. And not worry! In fact assume all is well. Renewable. No harm done, it all comes back.

This is confusing, first, you state energy cannot be created or destroyed. Great, I agree. Then you say it doesn't obey the laws of thermodynamics, the first of which is energy cannot be created or destroyed. So... which is it?

Yes, converting sunlight or wind into electricity is not perfectly efficient, some energy is "lost" or rather left uncaptured through heat and light for example, but that's not unique to renewables.

Nothing is renewable, except your drivers license and OHIP card.
The term renewable wrt energy simply means that within our system (the earth) that energy is replenished faster than it is consumed. Fossil fuels take millions of years to form, so when we consume it, it is not able to be replenished with new "fuel" at the same rate as we consume it.

Solar energy is a fuel source that is captured from an external source, the sun. So, they energy from the sun converted into electricity here on earth replenishes with new energy arriving here faster than we capture and use is. We won't have to worry about the sun ceasing to send energy our way, or the wind ceasing to blow, so even if you want to be pedantic about them not being "renewable" from a laws of thermodynamics perspective, you are simply creating a distinction without a practical difference.

Even more concerning is: harnessing this energy, requires equipment that is often enough problematic in its own right. Energy consuming to produce, and a burden on us in terms of sourcing and disposal. Batteries are nasty. They will represent the biggest danger to humanity in the second half of this century.
There are many different types of energy storage solutions. For the purposes of a power grid, Mechanical pumped storage or hydropower is a great solution, flywheel energy storage is another option. Thermal storage options like molten Salt are great, and Hydrogen fuel cell are also options. Batteries for now are a necessary evil (so long as you intend on keeping your mobile devices) but the technology is continuing to develop and become "cleaner".

There's some truth here, even if using a renewable energy source, there are still negative impacts on the environment, but creates more problems than is solves? That's quite the claim, and one I'd suggest is likely more narrative driven from those companies that resist changing from a status quo that made them rich.

OK. All I meant is that there will continue to be sun and wind which is unlike a fossil fuel i.e., when you burn it, it's gone. I don’t really want to get into word smithing and arguments though. Some of the new technologies being worked on (I mentioned a few briefly) are pretty interesting. And, I mentioned thermal batteries which is focused on the storage of heat.

"That heat is then used to warm up carefully engineered and arranged stacks of bricks, which store the heat for later use. Air blown over the hot bricks can then be used to generate steam, or delivered directly to heat up equipment."

Steelmakers have been using this for over 200 years so it isn’t new.

30 Canadians universities @ 500 engineers x 50 years = 750,000 engineers
30 Canadians universities @ 500 science grads x 50 years = 750,000 science people
1,500,000 have husbands and wives = 3,000,000

41 million Canadians

means ~ 8% are scientifically knowledgeable or at an arms length of.

That leaves 92% who are not.

And so terms like; renewable, green, etc. is propaganda that is guaranteed to fall on the ears of 92%. And that 92% can do a whole lot of harm. We take Ozympic, because we want the easy solution. Why diet and exercise? take this pill. And a 1,000,001 other easy solutions!!!! We are an easy to manipulate society, because we want to be. We want magic, miracle solutions. To be told its alright. Do what you want, no harm.

ignorance = wishful thinking = manipulation = harm

Solar energy is used in one of two ways, photovoltaic or hot water. Photovoltaic is the principal of a CCD (Charged coupled device), Silica (sand) will generate a charge when light hits it. That charge is small, it must be collected in large panels and stored, in many instances up-voltage transformers are needed to get to the 18 VDC or 24 VDC to make any real use.

Hot water is as you assume it, take the sun's heat, heat water, use the water to generate electricity.

Imagine the size of panels needed on cars! In the early 1990 McGill University set a new world record for solar powered vehicles. The vehicle was not exactly an SUV for 6. And top speed was low. Granted 35 years year later, things have improved. So can we realistically see cars with panels some 2M x 5M moving on the road and at slow speed????? MAYBE.

Wind, okay, you turn fans, they actuate mechanisms that generate electricity. It is AC and needs to be used instantly, or stored in cells.

You can then use these cells to power cars. But again, think of batteries and of the need for that electricity in our homes and work.

Buy 2100, the earths population is expected to be 11-12 billion. The grids in most nations is overloaded. You saw the blackout in 2003 and the Texas one 2-3 years ago. Nuclear power means pollution, it means accidents, it means spend fuel rods that must be stored in heavy water pools for 50 years. Hydroelectric will mean more dams and more flooded areas.

Preaching that an Ozympic is out there to save us, is wrong. We need to preach, CONSERVE, conserve, conserve.

the planet looses 100 million hectares of usable land each year ( 100 x 1,000,000 x 100,000 M^2 = 1,000,000,000,000 m^2 = 1,000,000 square KM) a year. By 2100, we will lose 75,000,000 Km^2 and be 1.5 times more populated.

We need to focus our energy on human survival. On powering our homes, work places, civic buildings. We need to find ways to feed ourselves.

And not sell 92% of this planet, on notions that things are free. You need not worry.

How does walking sound? mass transport/transit, sit still, do not waste.

Our energy is fixed. The easy, useful part will end. We have used more petroleum since 2000, than in human history. high earth reserves will empty by 2052. Deeper wells will be needed. That releases sulfurs and other contaminants.

A baby born today, will curse us by 2060. That person will be a mere 36 years old. But Molly house wife will cut your balls off, if you remotely touch her SUV, or Nail Salon. And hubby will do the same if you touch his SUV and Golf round in Carleton Place..

Biden warned Zalenski to not touch Russian energy infrastructure. Old Joe did not want gas prices to soar in an election year. And the Western European nations will throw Ukraine under the bus in a moment if their energy costs soar.

Are you guys talking about saving our species? Forget it it’s over. Even the people who claim to be knowledgeable and doing things to “save the planet” like recycling! :) and using led bulbs! :) are actively destroying our future because they’re selfish and lazy.

Funny situation but not worth spending time on it.
(I barely read anything here so might be totally off topic. If so apologies and please carry on)

Humans need to stop pretending they're going to have a long legacy from here.

They ain't surviving 1000's more years, let alone 100's.

Yup, the goose is cooked. I'm done worrying about the future. My poor son, but it is what it is. I just hope it ends like a Rolland Emmerich epic, and not like The Road.

Don’t choose. They’re animated characters. You can do whatever you want to them.
If you have a family though,..don’t let anyone see your drawings:)

I’ve seen a family, in a Tesla, park at charging station at a Buc ess in South Carolina, go into the (Worlds largest) convenience store, and return 1/2 hour later, only to remain sitting in their vehicle to eat their lunch, and wait for the charging to end or have enough charge to continue their trip… so am guessing their stay at the Buc ees was at least a minimum of an hour, whereas other travelers would have gassed up, and be gone in 5 to 10 mins.
I guess they didn’t have the fast charge 15 minute station that you posted about.

as of 2019 or so, Autism was 1 in 49 births. I do not know if that number is holding, increasing or decreasing. Incredible if you think that some 35 years ago, it was 1 in a 1,000.

If holding, that is 2% of our society. By 2060, your son who will be 40. And will be one of about 1.5 million Canadians.

Do you think that, we need to focus on Molly Housewife and her nails, or your son and the other 1.5 Million and theirs?
By 2030, cancer will touch 1 in 3 (Touch as in someone around you, or you) will deal with it.

So now, picture, Mom and Dad dealing with an Autistic kid, and one or both is dealing with cancer! When Old Molly Housewife comes by with her giant SUV, she better hope Mom and Dad are not carrying a gun.

Humanity is not going anywhere. It will be forced to answer some shit ass hard questions. It will be forced to deal with reality that is going to club it across the head.

They asked Einstein about how WWIII will be fought. This was in the background of the onset of the nuclear age. His reply, I don't know how WWIII will be fought, but WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Humanity needs to be damn careful. What we have seen since WWII has been shocking. Consumption that has eclipsed all of human history. So, some 100,000 years is being matched by 80. And no one lifts his head to say stop.

to envision, a Toronto., in 2060. Population 10-12 M. Electric grid stretched to breaking, and 10 Million EVs, 3 Million of which are plugged in. Or 10 M hydrogen cell cars, needing about 10% of the water supply to produce the Hydrogen!!!!

There is a bright side, way more people will be walking. No one will be able to afford anything.

Then what about your your link you posted that said 15 minute charge for 300 miles.

perhaps you can re read the article…. As there are a lot a variables that affect charging time…. I can only speak of what I saw at the Buc ees in Florence.

A friend of mine, who drove his Tesla to Myrtle Beach a number of years ago, had to stop to “refuel” twice as many time as I did, and had to spend two nights in a motel on the way down, instead of just the one I did. He gave us a drive while in Myrtle beach, and it’s an incredible vehicle, but not yet ready for long distant driving over a few days or more.

I have zero hope for humanity either way. I've moved on from the mental anguish other than poking fun at it occasionally. Humans are the problem, so how can there be a solution. I want my son to live a long healthy life, but I don't give two shits about the future of humans as a species. Our legacy is awful and Dinosaurs were undeniably much cooler. They lived for hundreds of millions of years and thrived while we've almost ruined our ecosystem in like the last 100 years.

I try my best to be at peace with the death that awaits me and not pay attention to all the depressing things that surround us. Go Oilers!

It is hard sometimes to be optimistic isn’t it. But do you realize that we are residing in the best period for humanity ever? If you could choose any moment in humanity’s past, now would be the best by all measures. Think back to how far we have come in the last 100 years. And the next 100 are sure to change even faster. What it means to be human may even evolve. We might create a new artificial species as well. Humans have been managing change, bending the moral arc of the universe for quite some time now. And it has always required balancing good and evil. The opportunities that surround us are absolutely mind-blowing though. Hard to not look forward with intrigue and excitement for me. As one genetic engineer famously said: man is so used to thinking of himself as the crowning glory of evolution that it is difficult to conceive that we may only be beginning of life.
