I loved taking courses in the summer, especially in University, because instead of 5 classes demanding my attention, I only ever did one or two during the summer, which meant that my grades for sumer courses were WAY better because I could devote more attention to them.

Basically: every course that I had a problem motivating myself to go to (2nd year stats requirement, I'm looking at you) I ended up doing in the summer because I knew if I tried to do them with a full course load, I would probably do poorly because I'd skip all the work for that class in favor of the more interesting classes. I'd much rather write 15 pages on an experimental social model or David Hume (yeah, that's right: I have an Ethics Philosophy minor) than work on a spreadsheet.

I love ethics and took some philosophy while I was in Germany. I read philosophical works now on most days. Could you recommend me some ethics writers that are more modern or obscure or modern articles ? I still have access to UVics database. I only really know the big mainstream names :(

If you like Louis CK then check out Bill Burr... He's wicked

Hannabal Burres is my fav standup at the moment.

I love Bill Burr, as well.

I remember when he had a surprise cameo in Breaking Bad for an episode and I would have spit out my drink if I had one.

But bottom line, a selfish decision.

In a way it is, but anyone who takes their own life is living in a reality that regular people can't understand. It's a world where the only option that looks anything close to good is ending everything. They're ill, they need help.

It's sad, very sad. Especially when a child is left without a parent because of it. We still have such a long way to go as a culture and society when it comes to helping those who are mentally ill.

I'm doing that now. I'll be able to graduate a year early and my classes are much more laid back and enjoyable. Four and a half months of summer would probably drive me crazy as well.

My neighbour across the street tried to kill himself two years ago. The reason why is because he didn't want his girlfriend to break up with him.

helping is great as a band-aid solution. real changes need to happen so that people don't get to that point so often. which is why i asked, what is progress? what do people really want?
what direction are we headed in? do we have a model for the future that will decrease levels of depression and stress?

So did anyone see the "Rocket Surgery" comment on the trade boards made by Habs fan on the subban contract?

I thought it was made by a Ducks fan and then Habs fans who have never heard that joke thought he was an idiot.

I don't get it, at first I thought he failed at saying its not rocket science and i just bursted out laughing on my laptop now it sounds like i got it all wrong.

Sometimes people say "It's not brain surgery." Sometimes they say "It's not rocket science."

Combining the two into "Rocket surgery" has been a joke for a long while now.

I can't imagine taking my own life, no matter how bad things get. I don't know what's on the other side, if there is anything at all, and I don't want to know until it's time. Even then I'm not sure I want to know.

That's a fact that's always fascinated me (in a very morbid way: ) fear of the unknown is one of the greatest de-motivators I know of. So what does it say about a person when they'd prefer to jump into the unknown with both feet instead of sticking with the known, no matter how miserable it may be? At the risk of sounding insensitive and/or uncaring, it seems to me like the ultimate case of "the grass is greener on the other side."

just think back and remember what you were before you were born, and that's what's on the other side

Probably! The way I look at is either there's something, or there's not. I doubt that there is anything, but if there is . . . fantastic. If not, im not going to exist to be bothered by the fact.

Very true. Imagine how different a world we'd live in if people just accepted this. Fewer wars, more living in the moment and less wasting time on ********.

It's a scary thought, but it's the reality of mortality.
