Hey tell me how it is.

Awesome movie - great scenes (I posted in the move thread that IMAX 3D + space movies are a great mix), decent plot (it's based on a comic book), acting was much better than I expected (but again, it's a comic book) and there was so much smart, witty humour in the movie. Groot was by far the best thing about the movie. I didn't even notice any swearing but apparently the raccoon let a few go. Very tasteful soundtrack. $18 in IMAX 3D - I think it's well worth it.

Funnily, my name isn't actually Dave. It's Jurgen. I think Dave is just cool. I'm also actually Austrian.

I'm just messing with you.

I was about to say "oh no worries" but then I see you was trollin' me :)

Sad thing is, we're partially responsible for it. So many people run to the doctor every time they get the sniffles and demand antibiotics for nearly everything. The overuse of antibiotics has pretty much caused a lot of the nasty viruses out there to mutate/evolve faster than normal.

We're at a point where I doubt medical science can keep up. It's very, very scary...especially when there are strains out there right now that are 100% resistant to even the strongest antibiotics.

People do run to the doctor and I agree there should be (unfortunately never will be) a culture shift, but keep in mind we're also being bombarded with foods that have been lying on a factory floor covered with bacteria on the outside and then sprayed with antibiotic (among other things) to make it "safe to consume" and packed. Plus you have the animals that are fed antibiotics and hormones so they can continue producing. Human immunity systems are getting weaker and weaker over time - at a much more rapid pace than ever before. I do not cite any references other than my own feelings based off media I've consumed over time so please feel free to research this topic at your leisure and form your own opinion. If you've been consuming processed foods from birth through puberty I'd say you're pretty much screwed already but I still prefer to consume organic and fresh food whenever possible.

Is this pre-built any good : m.ncix.com/products/features/97074

That kid on the NCIX youtube videos is a freak of nature.

Umm, that's not what happens. Viral infections are totally separate from bacterial. Antibiotics do not work on viruses, or cause them to mutate.

But yes, a lot of people act entitled when it comes to antibiotics for cold/flu-like symptoms. The thing is... majority of the time, it is rhinovirus that causes sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, etc. It is self-limiting, and there is literally no treatment for it. You just have to wait it out and rest. That concept is very hard for people to understand, especially in this day and age where there is a treatment for almost everything.

The one thing that I think that gets lost in all this is fungal infections.

Everyone always seems to focus on bacterial and viral, but there's almost zero education about fungal. My understanding is that the misuse of anti fungal drugs can cause similar resistances - and those sores create another vector for bacteria to enter and take hold?

Right, so fungal treatment is more complicated. Viruses and Bacteria, you could say, are "easier" to target in your body. Fungi and us are both "Eukaryotes"... i.e. we are more similar. Thus, oral fungal treatment is more toxic to humans than antibiotics/antivirals. That's why fungal treatment is mostly topical (eg. creams); antifungals target the difference between cholesterol in humans and ergosterol in fungi in our cell membranes.

Resistance has been found in antifungals, but I'm not sure about vectors for bacteria. I haven't actually done Infectious Diseases in school yet, so maybe I'm just unaware of it. The only possible thing, off the top of my head, is perhaps creating an imbalance of flora in your body. Eg. antifungal treatment killing C. albicans and letting the other pathogens take advantage, but typically, it's the other way around (i.e. yeast infections in women).

Alright, that's enough Medicine talk in the lounge for the day. :p:

typical cat... I go away for a few days and she can plant her ass anywhere in the apartment and I have a lot of nylon-based coverings on the furniture (so it does not absorb cat hair) but where does she decide to sit... On my messenger bag that I left with the flap open and has a felt type interior...

Dave Chappelle is definitely an all-time favourite of mine.

I'm still very partial to Louis CK, George Carlin and Daniel Tosh.

I had a friend who committed suicide last Tueday... He had a one year old son... He was facing a couple years in Jail for stealing a car and reckless driving, put a couple children in danger for his actions

Am I wrong to think he was a selfish piece of **** for killing himself? A father protects his children... Now that kid is going to grow up without knowing his father.

I wish I could resurrect the guy so I could punch him right in the face.

Not at all.

I think there's a sense of pity to be had for anyone who feels the need to take their own life, but it doesn't make their actions any less worse. I'm not sure how he lived his life and I didn't know the guy but leaving a child to fend for themselves in any case is selfish, especially when your woes come from your own mistakes.

I feel bad for his kid more than anything.

The guy took his own life. Selfish or not he has already paid the ultimate price. Not having a father (or even parents) is unfortunate but at this point the focus should be on getting the kids taken care of as best as possible. Without citing any references I hope you will agree that there are children who have been in similar situations that have grown up responsibly. In fact, I'm willing to bet there are those who had irresponsible parents and wish they'd never been there to be such poor influences on them in the first place.

I am kind of geeking out right now. Work is bringing in a professor from a local university to do a 3 day workshop in Structural Equation Modeling using AMOS. I have done a bit of SEM using LISREL many years ago, and AMOS seems much more user friendly. Just going through the book we will be using is getting me pumped up for this.

I'm totally stoked. And yes, that makes me a nerd.

Anyone know of a local store that sells SATA cables (to connect harddrives to motherboard)?

I'm looking at the big box stores and all of them want you to order online. It's not a big deal and I'll order one online if there's no other option but it's easier to just pick one up when I commute than it is to order online, wait a few days.

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that.

While I definitely see your POV, I think it's also important to note that you may not have the whole story. Suicide as a parent of 1 year old must have been a very difficult decision for him.
