Lonely end of the rink
“It’s hip to be gay” …. I don’t think it’s easy to be gay, as much as it’s become less stigmatic.

I think the people who come out as gay later in life, even after having been in a heterosexual couple and even having kids are either awakening to their nascent sexuality, or they are bisexual (remember, I believe it’s a spectrum) and realized they are more comfortable with a gay partner than a heterosexual partner.

Stories of gay people struggling with their homosexuality into young adulthood are still typical. They don’t have a reference point, so they take a while to recognize their feelings as an indicator of their sexuality. (I’m not gay, I am inferring from testaments of gay friends.)

I've always thought the "born gay" argument was completely unecessary. It doesn't matter one bit if choice is an element for some people. I read this fascinating essay years ago by a guy that chose to live his life as a gay man because he found the dance he felt men had to do with women to get sex was difficult and sometimes crushing work for uncertain reward. I thought the concept that choice was a completely valid way to be gay person was bloody brilliant.

I think there is both. I think there are some people that are born gay. From a young age you can tell they are going to grow up to be gay men, or lesbians.
Then you have some that chose to be gay, or bi or whatever.

I think the argument about being born gay was a strong argument to combat the "pray away the gay" groups that sprouted up across North America.

Again, I dont care if you were born that way or chose to be that way. You be with who makes you happy. Everyone deserves to find love. If you do find it, dont let it go.

Being gay is a sexual preference. That's it.

While I absolutely loath 'identy politics' and the entire 'liberal arts academia' circle jerk - the idea of sexuality and even gender existing on a 'spectrum' is 100% correct. Life is always both ends and everything in between - the duality of man. There are those who are completely who they are and living life as their true selves; and then there are those who hover somewhere 'in-between' and make their choice and/or are guided towards the idea of what could be their 'true selves'. A little too much 'guiding' in today's world imo.

Regarding the bolded, there is 100% a 'distinct' phenotype prevelent within the community that I'd think anyone with any sense of pattern recognition would recognize. Facial features, speech patterns, mannerisms... obviously does not apply to everyone gay or straight but the data is there for anyone to observe.

Life is a beautiful thing. Live and let live - on both sides of the spectrum.

no.. it is way more complex and it pulls in all aspects of society.

we are nowhere near as sophisticated and evolved a society to have this discussion. It will bring forth reactions that are combative and not analytical.

In Humanity's 200,000 of existence, we have never achieved any kind of intellectual state that would allow for this debate. And as we move forward, the doors close and not open.

So a dead debate.

Let us all go back to discussing Replicators, SMRs and Austin Mathew's contract.

@Flamingo . @Micklebot Thank you for the intellectual debate. It was nice to have an adult conversation on here.

I imagine there's an element of choice, that some people are more open to sexual plasticity than others. I can't tell you if it's physiologically determined, socialized, or a mix of both. As others have said, live and let live. I did use the word "imagine" because I really have no clue, my highest qualification is that of hockey fan.

If there were some cultural or environmental pressure, whether happenstance or engineered, that influenced people's sexuality, of course I would want to understand it. But in today's social climate, there are political factions that promote and weaponize this completely unfounded notion as fact. They suppress the rights of LGBTQ people and of women, and I will give no quarter to those people.

Do you think trans women should be allowed to compete against biological women in sports?

I think trans women should be allowed to participate in the women's class of recreational and most competitive sports. The focus is on health and socialization in most cases, and there's room for all to play and compete, and in general it doesn't pose a health or safety risk to women, or edge them out of spots to play.

But that's not the point you're interested in, is it? Let's get right to the 0.01% of athletes that get headlines.

I don't think Anne Andres should have been allowed to compete in the women's national powerlifting championship. In that particular case, there was not even any androgen-level testing prior to the competition. And in general, for very physical sports like power lifing and wrestling/MMA, the trans-female athlete might have an advantage of having developed higher bone density, larger hands, different body ratios, that just can't be erased. I don't predent to know the answer to the general question. For example, I'm fine with Quinn playing on the Canadian women's national soccer team. But I understand why some would come down on the other side of the argument... that at the top level (Tier-1 high school, NCAA, professional, national teams, etc.), depending on the sport, this very rarefied level of athletic performance should be reserved for non-trans women athletes.

This is the same argument as whether Caster Semenya should be allowed to compete in women's track and field.

so on Tuesday, I put 25 mm on the rear wheel of a set of wheels I built. And 23 mm on the front wheel. 42 mm deep aluminum rim from Eightinch. They are for track/single speed, I adapted them to road.

I mounted the babies on an old Mayata steel frame that I converted to accept Brifters and 10 speed drive. Taiwanese micro shifters from BikeNashbar and Shimano crank.. We are talking sharp. Shit ass heavy ~ 25 lbs,, but sharp.

Down to Manotick, I hit 40 and sustained it..After a while, I coasted, a group of millennials (2 girls and a guy), rang the bell and passed me... I raced them down and blew by them...f*** yea, ain't nothing like male ego being crushed. Did I tell you, hit 40 and sustained it!!!

2 weeks ago, on my OLD TT (650 C wheels) ~ 2 inches smaller than the 700's that are today's standards.. Some idiot in the 1990's decided it was best to be closer to the ground on a TT bike!!! More idiot Engineers....anyway, I hit 50 KM/hr...HUH !!!!

Hey, you know what pisses me off.. I was at Bennett's shop a few years ago (Euro-Sports on Bullham, next to the Parkdale market. Excellent bike shop)..we were talking and I suggested a 28 or 29" dia wheels for bikes.. NOW a f***ing US company released a 700 B.. roughly 29".... HUH!!!!! My dumb luck.

Talk about a missed opportunity. I had no means to bend Aluminum extrusion.. otherwise Beech Brand 700 B wheel. HHHUUHHHH!!!

so..my last two weeks, 50 kmh, 40 kmh, passed millennials, lost millions... still happy as a pig in shit.

Play Dude..Play...

Two players on Colingwood kissed after scoring a try.. they replayed it and no one flinched..No one cares..We have bigger problems. Our Melbourne Demons are at 60 points and out of it. We will finish 4th. Our women Demons finished 12 last year!!!! Who cares who kisses who..12th.

Depression is back. It brought anxiety along with it.

Got dumped. Unrelated to depression, did not help it. I was not the cause, her trauma is the cause.

She wont talk to me anymore and I have to see her every day at work now.

My contract didnt get renewed, so I am back to my old job at 2/3rds the pay.

Meds arent working.

I am tired of everything.

I have an exam in an hour that cost me $1000 to write.

Lift weights, eat healthy, get jacked and everything else will fall in place. I am at my absolute best when consistent with those things more so than any anti depressant I have tried. I am also at my absolute worst when I stop doing those things.

In regards to your work situation the above also applies but why not look for a different job?

Look at us all right now.
We weren't like this before.
This is what the world is coming to.
Everyone is angry. Everywhere and all of the time.

Why? Where did it come from?

Did it happen spontaneously? Is it social media? Something more nefarious and purposeful?

I don't know exactly when it started or why, but these past five years everything feels different somehow. And I think everyone feels it, yeah?

EDIT:
Perhaps I'm feeling philosophical today, but it brings me back to this amazing commencement speech by David Foster Wallace about not settling into default auto-pilot patterns of thinking. Long but awesome vid for those who have never heard it. (Highly recommend a big spliff before listening to it. Lol).

I disagree.

Caster Semenya is a totally different case. She is part of the minority of people who was born. Intersex. In her case the argument can be made. Trans women should have a division of their own. One day all biological womens records will be broken if trans are allowed to compete at any level. How does that protect women's rights?

No one is preventing Trans athletes from competing against one another. It's when you cross into the biological realm is when it's simply unfair.
