Thank you for the input - absolutely I have tried to get info throughout q1 and actually as far back as q4 when it was first stated that things were changing. There is either a very real "cone of silence" over the issue, or nobody knows

I feel it is unethical to dock payment for failing to achieve goals/targets that have never been communicated. I am not experienced enough in these matters to know if I'm using that correctly. But to your point, it most certainly is horrible management.
Not a lawyer, but I’d imagine there would have to be some legal basis to pursue here. A reduction of compensation based on newly-defined objectives that weren’t actually defined? Hard to call that a bonusable activity when you weren’t even given a target to strive for. It almost sounds like they cut the bonuses entirely but didn’t want the uproar that such an announcement would cause.

I think it is unethical. Because they are changing the terms of your employment, if you don't agree I think you could argue that this is the basis of termination and you could seek severance. As long as you keep records of all interactions you made with you superiors to show negligence on their part I think you are within your rights.

If they made changes that could be deemed unattainable this would be a sneaky way of trying to frustrate you into quitting which is illegal.

Also, I could be wrong.

Did you sign off on it in writing?

I have not signed off on anything (beyond my original contract). But also I have not been presented anything to sign at this point - I still don't know what I failed at, only that I failed (at least that's what I've been told).

This started because I expressed that in the absence of any communication regarding our targets (that I have been after for 3+ months) I would expect bonuses to be paid out at 100%.

This doesn't just affect me - I have direct reports that will also suffer for this, and every other department manager is in the same boat themselves along with their reports. I don't know that it is an attempt to push people to quit (plenty of us already job searching), I think it is just incredibly inept ... and unethical.

Are the terms of your employment in that contract because that could be to your advantage in this.

There is an employment law show on 580 CFRA each weekend and it talks about situations just like yours.

this is the show but the subjects may not pertain to you in this episode but I am sure one of them do.

It may start at 4pm today but am not sure

About a year ago there was a discussion on this thread about UFOs / UAEs after the release of the official US Navy video(s) that showed some REALLY interesting flying objects.

I believe at that time the Navy stated they were commissioning an investigations into those and other phenomenon. The preliminary assessment was released on Friday and can be found here: https://www.dni.gov/files/ODNI/documents/assessments/Prelimary-Assessment-UAP-20210625.pdf

Thought some of you might be interested.

I am definitely fascinated by this story. I found it interesting that whenever I heard a ufo story id tend to roll my eyes and assume there is a logical explanation. But this time, when I heard some potential logical, non-alien, explanations I got a little bit angered. I didn’t want to believe it. Makes me worry that im down a rabbit hole

They already seemingly explained one as a weather balloon. A bit disappointing to be fooled like that. Airborne clutter is one of the categories they expect many of these incidents to fall into which I guess makes sense. Some objects caught up in wild wind shears could move unexpectedly. But still there is an "other" category. I cant decide whether im hopeful or scared of it.

They also mention that many analysts fear their reputations being disparaged if they report these incidents. I guess that’s why only now, after all these years, they will dedicate some resources towards investigating it and removing stigma.

Fascinating that they’re employing artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms to discover patterns. I guess we should be expecting AI everywhere during this digital revolution we're in.

in the early 1900 Albert Einstein continued the work of a scientist by the name of Lorentz. It was on general relativity. The bases of; the theory of relativity is light and the speed of light. One of the conclusions of all work on relativity is: we cannot travel at the speed of light.

1) And so, all objects that are more than a few earth years away from us, are unreachable. Either by us or by them. And so, how would anyone living outside our planetary system ever reach us? If we could find a way to travel at sub light speed for ever, it would take thousands of years to go anywhere. And for what? and think of the evolution of the travelers, they would not be anything like the creatures that left their home.
2) in the 1960's they did all sorts of monitoring of radiation/radio signals in all directions, they found nearly identical signals. And so the sense is, the universe is expanding like a balloon. Making all travel paths arcs. So, unless worm holes are real, impossible to take short cuts.
3) Earth's atmosphere, size (so gravitational pull), location relative to the sun, etc. led to human life (even you religious guys...read up on the Higgs Boson, you will find that creationism and evolutionism are not mutually exclusive...the inner most part of all particles is: empty space...read the book of genesis: and from nothing came ....). So the odds that another such setup exists is negligible. Thus making humanoide living creatures virtually impossible.
4) Read your Professor Hawken's work on black-holes and the theory of time. The big bang theory and singularities..Effectively all existence may have began at one moment in time. Thus making all entities in our Universe the same age. Why would you expect some life form to be so much more advanced than we are? and physical limitations on us (not being able to travel at the speed of light), not apply to them?

We are alone. One tiny planet, the 3rd from the sun. Who, thanks to incredible circumstance has life on it. (again, whether God, accidentally or a a combination of God and accidents). If in the millions of entities out there, another body is similar and has something living on it, we will never know. We are receding as a people. As our population grows, food will be our sole preoccupation. What is out there will have zero meaning. In 100-1000 years, we will not be living in space, or doing a whole lot of sci-fi. We will be trying to eat on a planet that is experience soil erosion at 1-2% a year, that continues to grow at 1-2% a year and when a cross over point gets hit...then you religious guys need to kick in, because: God help us.

Save the millions spent on crap, use to it create a balance of life here. So that our descendants can have food and water and air and pharmaceuticals to survive. Otherwise, we risk two stone ages.

I'm not a real believer in UFOs, I merely posted the link to the investigation as a follow-up to the discussion from last year.

I'm pretty agnostic about the probability of intelligent life on other planets. The law of large numbers would seem to make it likely -- see the Fermi Paradox.

BUT as a guy who is interested in physics and cosmology as a hobby, I will suggest there are a fair number of errors in your points 1 thru 4.

Thank you, I will look this up.

The latest development is that there does not appear to be a Performance Bonus Policy, as quoted in my job offer.

The plot thickens!

I would think that if bonuses are fully discretionary then there is no employment law case here. They can withhold your bonus for any reason or no reason at all if that's the case.

As it turns out they were able to track down the policy and provide it. It is not being followed.

Thank you all for your input on this. I will address it with my employer and not trouble the forum with it further.

I really don't think civilization will be around 100+ years form now. There may be pockets of humans here and there, but that's about it. Something really big will happen before then.

Hell, if this crazy increase in temperatures continues, we might end up wondering if we'll have any food for the masses in the next decade, let alone the next century.

As for ufos...there's definitely life in the universe, but it's so far away it will never come anywhere near us being able to see it, let alone interact with it.

Prices are bonkers. I live an hour outside of Toronto and in my neighbourhood homes are selling at 900k+ for a detached home. Townhomes are going around 600-700k.

My family will never afford a home at this rate. But at least we save a tonne and live a fun life now!

From what I've been reading after that condo collapse, there doesn't seem to be much of any government oversight and a ton of corruption withing the building industry in that state. Definitely do your due diligence on the home inspection. Lots of scary shit happening down there.

My sister's home in Kemptville just appraised for over double what they paid for it like 4-5 years ago. I have friends that bought in Barrhaven around that time and they've also made about 100% ROI. The US isn't much better but Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver are in a league of their own at this point. Probably more expensive to buy a home in those cities than in New York when you factor income.

Yes, Florida is a state full of scammers looking to make a quick buck. My house was built in the 60s and is CBS. Seller is a now-retired cop that bought it 5 years ago and gut renovated it down to the studs. Interesting place because he did everything himself out of his garage. But yeah I'm confident it's very well built and it passed inspection with flying colors.

My long term plan was to retire, sell my house in Toronto, then buy 2 homes in Ottawa and start my job as an usher at the CTC... now the increased Ottawa house prices have foiled that plan! :(
