Also, this means we're probably gonna see a BIG spike in the number of cases in the coming days. No need to panic. Its completely expected now that we're actually testing.

Yes, and that's a very good thing: all those people will be isolated as a result of this... as opposed to walking around spreading the virus.

Behind you, look out
Hopefully that is the last crappy xmen movie we will have to see now that the mutants are back with marvel. I have a feeling there will be something in black widow that will give a glimpse into mutants joining the mcu

That's all I'm trying to point out. We deal with influenza every year. Symptoms are the exact same. Deaths occur. Last year 80,000 Americans died because of the flu, 302 Canadians.

I'll tell you the major issue with this virus.

It spreads QUICKLY. Yes, most people who get it will really have mild symptoms. But the reason they are putting in these closures is to slow the spread.

Italy went from nothing, to literally having to decide who dies and who gets a ventilator. About 5% of people who get this virus require ICU care. Canada has about 3500 ICU bed spots. If the virus spreads like it has elsewhere, they predict around 5000 people may need ICU care. However, if we slow down the spread, and we see that amount of patients over the span of 6 months, our healthcare system will deal with this.

The flu also kills people too, it does every year, but it does so from about October to April. Not spread over 1-2 months. But if we can "flatten the curve" then we will protect our healthcare system, and our healthcare workers just slightly.

This being said, people need to cool it with trying to buy the entire store! Stores will restock, toilet paper is made in Canada, they will still make it! Wash your hands, stay away from large crowds right now, and stay home if you are sick. But lets not go all zombie Apocalypse here!

Fun story from the grocery store. Dr Oetker frozen pizzas are on sale, so naturally they are all sold out... But the Mushroom flavour? Not even at the end of the world apparently

Now I know why we have stopped all ice rentals.

From the NP about government preparation:

“Stockpiling body bags, choosing a central place where people bring corpses of family members and identifying hockey and curling rinks cold enough to be temporary morgue sites are among the government’s planning guidelines.”

The surge capacity of crematoriums, running out of coffins and church space for holding funerals and recruiting temporary grave diggers are all outlined in the “Management of Mass Fatalities: Canadian Pandemic Influenza Preparedness,” a planning guideline prepared by the Public Health Agency of Canada in 2009.

That definitely one-ups burying a toonie under center ice.

But....I guess if they really feel it might be necessary, an already cold arena to hold bodies makes sense. But man, get a shiver up my spine just thinking that someone (especially government) is moving forward with that kind of plan. This is getting more real every day...

Ok, but... that's not WHY we suspended ice rentals. That document is just identifying the infrastructure available to us in case of that specific need.

We suspended ice rentals because the vast majority of ice surfaces are municipally run, and the city closed all Municipal facilities for three weeks due to an inability to contain March Break travel. The rinks are closed for the exact same reason that the library and museums are closed. So unless they plan on piling dead bodies inside a hollowed-out cadaver of a fiberglass Stegosaurus in the Museum of Natural History, this isn't related.

My son had H1N1 when he was a baby. Scary time.
My son was 8, and he was hospitalized for 3 weeks and he was in critical condition at one point.

Not gonna lie, not the most relaxing vacation currently in Mexico. Bunch of my kids friends cancelled in Montreal when the global travel ban was announced as Insurance will now play ball. When we left Wednesday, we didn’t have that opportunity as Mexico is high risk for less serious stuff like kidnapping , murder and gang wars haha.

Place is pretty full but large so we have lots of space to ourselves and lots of Purell, wipes and good old soap!

Around here, libraries are open but activities suspended. So you can still get your books but all the ste(a)m toys/activities are put away.

School board daycares are closed, but the private centres are still open at this point.

A lot of recreational activities are being cancelled, my daughter's one dance school just suspended their March break camp.

Also, just found out that my sister's flight to New Zealand got cancelled less than 24h before they were due to take off due to NZ closing borders.

That's like my grocery store, basically all frozen veggies were sold out... Except for the Brussels sprouts which were fully stocked.

Lol, I just got an email from my curling club asking if anyone wants free ice for Sunday, as that league (the early Sunday evening draw) decided to suspend their season for 3 weeks.

Yeah, all my kids social stuff just got the 3-week ban as well. Not just March Break stuff, but Scouts & Guides, plus the evening sports run through the city (due to the municipal building lockout that starts Monday).

My sister-in-law had her trip (with her two young kids) to Jamaica cancelled by her travel agent yesterday, which was a blessing because she's kind of a ditz and she was refusing to cancel because "she'd earned this trip" :shakehead
