Wasn't this virus known years prior to the first reports by the media?

The doctor who was warning patients/colleagues had died from it didn't he?

There were also a few new reporters in the heart of Wuhan who were recording what its like inside the city, they went "missing" and have not been found since.

There are several known viruses from this strain. SARS, MERS and Covid 19.

Behind you, look out
so Canada which lists ~130 may be ~130,000? eeekks
We are in better shape.
So far ( i believe this is still the case) all new cases have come from outside Canada and because of self quarantining, they have not spread.
America went unchecked and their government has been holding back info because Trump cares more about reelection then saving people.

Just watching the last few pages and seeing numbers get tossed around as far as hospitalization rates, mortality rates, critical care rates etc. something that people aren't quite grasping is that if extreme measures aren't taken to curb the spread, parts of society will cease to function. Imagine if half the people who grow or ship our food get sick, if an entire fire station got sick, if a third of the nurses in the city got sick, if all the people who keep our water clean suddenly got sick, if entire deployments of the military got sick during a natural disaster etc. etc. We all rely on each other for so many things and if a few of them stop working, it will be absolute pandemonium out there on top of a virus that's maybe killing 5% of us.

On top of that, the more it spreads and lives in humans the more it has a chance to mutate and get worse. That has perhaps already happened in Iran and we're only about 3 months into this.

Yes, the virus was first discovered in Wuhan and doctors began notifying each other and discussing it. Police interrogated these doctors and told them to stop spreading rumours and shut down their chat groups on WeChat. Once it became a full blown epidemic, the government reacted quickly (built a a hospital in a week, forced quarantines across the country). This is how the government in China often operates, they light their house on fire but do a good job of putting the fire out.

As for the "citizen" reporters in Wuhan, yes they were detained. To be fair, they were breaking the law. They were going into hospitals and filming during a mandated quarantine. This was obviously very dangerous as it helps the spread and obviously they just get in the way of doctors. That being said, they were doing it as the rest of China wasn't seeing the real story in Wuhan. If you go against the government, you get detained in China. Hopefully they will be treated fairly, although sadly I dont think that will be the case.

then we will be so f'ed that a pornstar will be like a virgin.

Since we cannot do anything, we might as well sit, chat on HF boards and hope that it is no where near as extreme.

Do you have any links that prove they got detained?

I dont. I believe i watched a report a month ago that quoted one of their mothers saying that her son was detained by police and they weren't giving her any other information.
That doesn't sound too promising.

There is more to this outbreak that we will never fully understand.

Just hope the racial hate crime doesn't escalate as things get worse in NA

Sadly, that's how the CCP acts. People in China that publicly go against them and dont follow their rules get detained.

I hope racial hate crimes don't escalate as well. I have heard that by no fault of their own Chinese restaurants are in particular really hurting right now.

The CDC have tested 77 people this week. The Utah Jazz have tested 58. Its gonna get pretty wild down there.

I'm pretty sure the QCH will test more today than the CDC will have.

Btw people, we're getting huge traffic jams at the drive in. You NEED TO HAVE AN APPOINTMENT MADE THROUTH OTTAWA PUBLIC HEALTH. Make sure you call them before coming out.

Edit: sounds like the drive thru is closing for now and deferring to the Brewer centre.

Which is fantastic news. It means the local backlog of people who potentially need testing has been relieved to a manageable level, and that the Brewer center testing site is able to handle current capacity.

Health officials have said that the drive-thru can be opened again with minimal set-up time should the need arise again.

This is good news for the moment. This is the "curve flattening" we're hoping for. Now we just need to hope we can continue to get small wins like this.

After being in some of the stores today and seeing what other people are experiencing, I'm not so sure but I keep my hope.

People being ****ing idiots and panic-hoarding like complete morons despite there being ZERO evidence of any supply shortage (outside of the temporary artificial ones created entirely by those morons - ie: the whole toilet paper fiasco) is thankfully not how we measure community transmission of a virus.

When I say that closing the drive-thru is a good sign, I mean it in a context that is looking only at our capacity to offer medical services.

You can't fix stupid. Stupid people are going to make this worse than it should be, for sure. But at least for the time being, not needing the drive-thru is a good sign.

Is that actually why it's closing? I mean, I hope you're right but that would not have been the conclusion I would jumped to first.

It's not a conclusion I jumped to.

CBC radio just aired an interview with a local health officials who explicitly stated it.

Keep in mind - this does not mean that there is nobody who needs COVID testing in Ottawa. All it means is that we are currently able to handle the capacity of testing that needs to be done.

Bonk! good to see you back in here, even if at such a grave time.

As far as other things go, it will obviously take some time for any applied measures to have their effect on the curve. This article does a good job of breaking down how the numbers relate to reality

The corner store where I buy all my groceries is fully stocked.

The good side of living in Hull! Everybody thinks "gotta load up so gotta go to Costco or Wal-Mart and buy as much as I can carry" so depanneurs are sparred the madness.

I live near not too far from the stockyards in Toronto. There are a bunch of slaughterhouses still. I went and picked up meat directly there today. Freezer is full now. Few bakeries nearby too, will be going directly to the outlets at the source. I am sure you have access to this kind retail in Ottawa too.
